These guys know their pies, and pasties. They're the best I've found in Brisbane at least, and lord knows I've tried a lot.

$2.50 Banana Bread! $2.50 BANANA BREAD!…read more I was very excited to discover this place. Maybe not at first, as when I first stepped inside I was rather taken aback with how empty the display cabinet looked, and how desolate the rest of the store was. Just as I was formulating an escape plan the very cheerful woman behind the counter greeted me. I had no choice but to step forward and take a look. Nothing appealed to me greatly, apart from the thickly sliced Banana Bread. I enquired as to the price and was astonished; $2.50 Banana Bread! You many think my reaction is a little extreme, but I love Banana Bread and if you're not a regular eater of this amazing delicacy you won't appreciate just what good value that is. Most places charge at least $4, while I've paid up to an obscene $7.50 for a slice before. Unfortunately there's nothing else to rave about in this place, but seriously, $2.50 Banana Bread!
I have never been a fan of Brumby's or Baker's Delight with their jam and cream buns, cheesymite…read morescrolls and date scones. I prefer to go to specialist patisseries for baked goods and breads. Bumbleebee Bakery at Eight Mile Plains is the exception to the rule. As a bakery, it does a mean trade on meat pies, sausage rolls and those nasty, artery blocking jam and cream buns. There are also some scrumptious cakes and macaroons available. The macaroons are $2.20 each or six for $13. They come in an assortment of flavours and the fillings are more buttery than creamy. There is also a small Chinese baked goods section with sweet breads filled with red bean paste, BBQ pork buns and coconut buns. It's sort of like a sampler selection from Breadtop. To top it off, the staff are always friendly and cheerful. Usually they're out the back whipping up fresh new cakes but will immediately bustle out as soon as you ring the bell. What more can one ask from a neighbourhood bakery? Bumblebee gets five out of five from me for being the first decent bakery on Brisbane's far South side.

There are always people lingering in front of the long cabinet or sitting at the tables in here. It's always hard to choose what to get from the array of exquisite looking tarts and gateaux on display. The lemon meringue tarts are topped with cone of meringue about three times the height of the base and the Esperance gateau is so green it just about shimmers. On my latest trip to Le Bon Choix I had a strawberry tart and a flat white. The coffee was okay, maybe a B, but the strawberry tart was delicious and they didn't skimp on the strawberries. Le Bon Choix does individual tarts and cakes as well as croissants, eclairs and pain au chocolats but they also do full size cakes to take home and share (or not). Their opera cake looked tempting with it's perfectly lined layers and glistening top. I'm still a Chouquette girl at heart, but if I find myself on this side of town and in need of a pick-me-up, I'm always more than satisfied with a trip to Le Bon Choix.

I have tried most of their bakery foods and they all tasted delicious. I would have to say the best quality of this bakery is the wonderful customer service you get as soon as you walk through. It can be quite busy at this bakery and plenty of people come through the door, however, they still have time to make sure they greet the customers who've just walked through. How nice! The staff there are always smiling and it makes buying bread there a lovely trip. This bakery is located very close to the Oxley train station and next to the Post Office so if you pass by whilst running an errand, I suggest dropping by to pick up a sweet bun!

Not having many pennies in my pocket at the time, we decided on what seemed like a quiet little bakery. Monticlare is down the end of 68 Racecourse Rd. With a few plastic seats outside and a very relaxed and casual atmosphere, it felt like the kind of place where I could get a cheap feed. The Bakery had a nice array of breads, croissants, cakes, cupcakes, sandwiches, and pies. The lady serving was lovely and attentive but I felt bad that I had to ask her to repeat the pie flavours because I could not quite understand what she was saying through her thick accent. The pie was the not he best I have ever had but definitely affordable and adequate. Sitting outside, I was pestered by a magpie who obviously intimidates enough customers there to be fed regularly enough. Overall, this was a nice enough bakery.

They also look like their freshly made in house because of their shape and lovely buttery colour. On this day I just wanted the old plain mince pie. What I learned about Monticlair Bakery is that they've been at this business for years and the recipes haven't changed. You need to bit patient with the lady on the counter. Not because she's rude, actually I have nothing bad to say about her. Its just her accent is so heavy it filters most English pronunciations out. Trust me when I say she wants to make sure she's getting your order right. So after a few minutes, I strolled away eating into a pie that has been the same since Monticlaire opened. I hope nothing changes. That is all.

Not only do they have a wide variety of bread options and sweet baked treats, they usually have a discount table towards the afternoon. You can find all sorts of baked goods on the table as it varies from day to day. Many times I've picked up their scones at half price or sometimes even more than half price. I have taken home bags of cookies at a fraction of the cost or loaves of bread heavily discounted. When I am planning on having guest over in the afternoon, I duck out quickly to see the specials. I know, sounds a bit sad, but it is a part of my grocery run and they do have hard to resist specials a lot of the time. Clearly, I get bread here a lot! The service here is wonderful. The ladies behind the counter are very patient with me. I like to take my time in choosing my cakes and baked goodies. I like planning on when and what I will be consuming during the week. Sometimes they might even pop in a suggestion- I think it may be a ploy to rush me, but I still very much appreciate it. Great little bakery in Jindalee with great value for money options.

It's true that there are probably only two places to get a good cuppa in Annerley; Dudley Street Espresso is one of them. Being a cafe that sells collectables on the side, it fits into that stretch of Ipswich Road just nicely, with it's antique stores and it's op shops. It's a busy cafe, on a busy stretch of road, so you can expect it to be noisy. The coffee is creamy and strong. The food is worth a mention- try one of their sandwiches. They're yum, and very affordable. I probably come here more for the food than the coffee to be honest (nothing beats a good sanga). Go sit down at long table that runs down the middle of the space, or sit in the window and people watch, or...car watch, as it does look out onto bustling Ipswich Road. The collectables are cute, but I always get the feeling they are more ornamental, an actual part of the shop, rather than goods to be sold. Maybe you'll feel differently and find yourself a nice treat to take home with you. The choice is yours.

What stood out to me first were their novel stools and chairs, along with the large mural and overhead lightbulb lamps, all of which came together to give the cafe an industrial meets earthy ambience. Oh, and I especially liked their table numbers that are set on a large wooden spool with thread! The menu was neatly chalked on the board behind counter, where a flamboyant neon lime green espresso machine sits next to jars of baked goods. I do quite like the unexpected hints of pop art around the cafe juxtaposed with everything else wooden - it just seems to really work! Well anyway, I wanted to just take snaps of everything, but onto what we had... The Salmon Dance ($13) was not bad, and the Kerfuffle also looked delicious. The iced coffee ($5.5) was awesome, as it was a hot day, and the British Ploughmans was pretty intense. it was pretty much a platter of wine food - cheeses, pearl onions, Granny smith apples, and a meat pie served cold.
