We started taking our daughter to swimbabes a few months before she turned 2. At the time she was terrified of the water, every night was a battle just to get her to take a bath. I was so stressed and nervous for our first lesson. We had teacher Alyson and she was amazing! I left the class with the biggest smile and my daughter loved the lesson as well as Alyson. We are going on our 6th month of lessons with Alyson and plan to continue. My daughter is obsessed with her and talks about her all the time. When a child needs extra help she is willing to work with the families at lessons as well as give them tips to try at home (we were recently one of these families). Alyson always smiles and says hello to my daughter by name as soon as she sees her. We also love seeing her take extra time to coach the swim team and you can tell she really loves those kids too! Linda and Veronica are the ladies we have worked with in the front office and again I have nothing but great things to say about them. We love them all. read more

I started looking for swim classes from the moment my daughter was born - not only as a good activity for the both of us but also I believe a very important skill children and adult should know. I was pleased to find that SWIMBABES is only about a 10 min drive from us so we signed her up. We had her first class recently (she is currently 5 months) and loved it! Our instructor Kendra made me feel very at ease and comfortable having my daughter in the water. Yes they don't have control about parking but it can be frustrating that every time I show up it's full and lugging a car seat isn't ideal but one of these days I'll get a spot lol! read more

I am a parent of two boys, and I have introduced both of them to swimming from birth. My first son is nearing 11 years, and we began with regular classes, at a swim school in Beaverton, as a baby. I appreciated that our classes were small and in a warmer pool, to make the babies more relaxed and comfortable. I felt my son could learn faster than he did, but I generally enjoyed our experiences for a year. We were then introduced to an instructor who tried a tough-love technique, including gentle threats that mom would leave if he cried, etc. I disagreed with this technique, and soon after, the pool closed suddenly. I followed a former instructor around town for private lessons and made a good friend, but he moved away by the time son #2 was born, 5 years later. I started over. A friend suggested we try Swimbabes, a survival swim school. Having just moved into a home with a creek and pool, it was important to me to seek solid and thoughtful instruction. I signed my 5-year old up for intensive daily survival camp, and my 6-month-old up for bi-weekly classes. The instruction for both boys was fantastic! My older son's instructor scared me a bit with her take-no-hostage attitude, but my son responded very well, and he left the camp asking for a play date with "Teacher Sarah"! He built huge and measurable confidence over the 2-week course! We transitioned to weekly classes after that. My baby has gone through all levels of development and struggle and success with Swimbabes over the past 5 years. I recall the fully-clothed 5-minute floats as a baby, whimpering or even crying most of the time. I also recall his awareness that he was capable and learning that he didn't need to be scared. He grew by leaps and bounds, emotionally. His fear dissipated, and his respect for all water flourished, in and out of the pool. Trust me, I have TRIED multiple other classes from other businesses on the side, hoping to find ONE that could compare (so I could stop driving from SW Portland for class at Swimbabes), but I am always always always disappointed. He regresses immediately. Whether it's been teacher, Sarah, Kelley, Jackie, Susie, Kendra or Alyson, we have found success. This summer, both of my boys (age 5 and 10), swam on the Swimbabes swim team, under the skilled direction of Coach Alyson, and they both had a blast! They out-swim all their friends, I'm so proud of them, and I'm grateful for these many years with Swimbabes. Alyson is fantastic, and I'm dreading taking some time away for gymnastics this Fall, but I plan to be back! :) Sara Ps -- I rated 4 stars to be realistic. I'm not a fan of all their music choices, some days seem cleaner than others, sometimes an instructor doesn't mesh well with a student, but I don't believe anything is worthy of 5 stars. Our 2yr old has attended swim classes here since June 2018 (right when he turned two). I can't say enough good things about this school!!! His interaction with water has blossomed and it made our summer, and anytime we are near a pool (and bath time too for that matter), so much more fun!!! Without a doubt its challenging both for our son and for us the parents. But seeing the look on his face when he accomplishes something new is all worth it, giving him that self confidence. I totally trust the instructors and they are extremely understanding and patient and know just the right amount to push or when to pull back. I like many things about this place but there are a lot of rules that feel somewhat unnecessary and that don't exist at other schools like Children of the Sea. The space is small and the dressing room could be nicer. I really hate the no photo policy. Since only parents and guests who sign in are allowed in the pool I don't see a problem with letting parents take pictures. I know I signed an agreement but I did it because I didn't have a choice. I will likely switch to Portland Parks and Rec classes in the summer. I feel it's important to have my kids take a survival class but it gets a bit pricey after a couple sessions. read more

Parents Read This! I don't write bad reviews often but sometimes Our reviews act as warnings to others. I actually n bet stepped foot into the Swimbabes building. I called inquiring about baby swimming lessons and the survival class. The lady I talked to was very rude, short, and not all that helpful and she actually hung up on me.m when I asked if I could talk to sometime that could answer my questions. Mind you these are questions like, what day of the week are classes and the times that they are offered? How long is one class? What do they do in their swim lesson and survival class? What temperature is the water? Pretty basic questions. Okay so despite the lady hanging up on me, I went online and signed up for a class. Two days before the class was to begin I called again because I had not received a phone call or email about the class starting in 2 days. You'll never believe that my baby was not going to be able to be in the class I signed him up in and instead they told me he would have to choose from ONE other option that of course didn't work with our schedule. I asked why they didn't call me or send me a letter or an email? What if I were to have just shown up to class? After my second interaction JUST over the phone I decided that I would go somewhere else. This all happened at the end of 2017. Find another place. I read all of these other bad reviews and they are so valid and then the response from Swimbabes is so fake and lacks any kind of customer service. Get rid of these teachers and maybe they need new management or owners too. Someone call CPS if they endanger your child! read more

This place is incredible! I started my daughter at 6 months old and she was an independent swimmer at 18 months. Now 6 years old, she is perfecting all four strokes. If you are looking for the BEST swimming school, this is the place. I've read many of the negative reviews on here and they are just ridiculous. We have worked with every instructor at SWIMBABES and they are all knowledgeable and kind. Some parents have a harder time following the rules and recommendations than the children do, I think that is the case when the experience is negative. read more

Swimbabes is a wonderful program and teacher Suzy is great! Our two children are doing great! She is patient and calm and very safe! I am a nurse and have cared for adult victims of childhood drowning. Very very sad! I'm confident my children can handle themselves in the water including respect of the water! First off I want to remind anyone reading this review that Swimbabes teaches first and foremost SURVIVAL. No matter what your child's age or skill level the instructors make sure they learn the skills to survive falling in the water first. This they accomplish amazingly. I have 2 children in the program both started around 6 months of age. The younger the better. In less than a year on the program both my children passed their super floats which is literally me tossing my fully dressed and shoed child into the water which they then must float on their backs for 5 minutes. After more than 4 years in the program I've seen hundreds of kids accomplish this. Every single child is capable of this as long as you as the parent are willing and capable of handling the commitment. There are certainly times that it is hard to take. Since kids take cues from their parents if you freak out so will they. Although I can sympathize with some parents who have left bad reviews for Swimbabes I want to point out that the "failure" rate of this program is so small it's really not worth considering. I've had every single instructor that works there now and others that no longer work there. They are all slightly different but they are all dedicated. Some people don't like other people speaking firmly to their children and will get rubbed the wrong way. Once again this is a Survival school. If you want to pay 5 bucks at a community center for a teenager to "teach" your child how to flounder in a pool with floaties on than this isn't for you. This program isn't cheap but it's a program that gets results. After your child gets his/her super float then they begin to learn different strokes and kicks. I was very proud to have kids that at 2 years old where swimming without any kind of flotation device and when they got tired just flip on their backs and float. I only go here because I have no choice. There is no other facility on the Eastside that offer swim lessons to toddlers 2 and under. There's only about 8 parking spaces which is a huge inconvenience with a tot in the rain. The bathroom is disgusting with 1 shower and one toilet each for boys and girls- hardly any room for three kids and Moms to change. The most important part- the actual lesson- is good. That's what gives them 1 star. Don't get me started about their ridiculous schedule and payment plan- you'll need a translator. I go for the safety of my child and that's it. Once she turns 3 and can go to the athletic club for lessons we are out if here! read more

We had tried several different swim schools ( NC aquatic park, Cascade Fitness and Children of the Sea). I hesitated to join this one because it was more expensive and it was difficult to get into a class because the class times were not favorable for my family's schedule. The three schools listed above all had a similar format that wasn't working beyond teaching a back float. After the fourth round of swim classes with little visible progress, I decided that it was time for a change. The difference in instruction compared to all the other schools was 180. After just 2 lessons my 5-year-old son was swimming independently! He just needed a few pointers to help him combine his previous knowledge and he was off. I honestly had no idea he knew how to swim! The teacher knows exactly what the kids need to hear and trusts them to do it, giving them the confidence to progress. Seriously, I wish I hadn't wasted so much money at all the other schools and just come here. If you want to see results-this is the place. read more

It took me 2 months to write this review since this swimming lessons was the worst experience that I ever have with my baby. The reason why I am giving at least one star is because of the front desk lady otherwise I would give none. She is adorable!!! I payed for the syncro babies classes and I went there 4 times and just stopped going. The classes are the TOTALLY opposite of fun. They have so much rules that you are always afraid to do something wrong because they will remember you in front of everyone. The teacher Jak she is impatient all the time, which make impossible for anyone to relax. My baby will cry once she would grab her and she sad that is because she is not used to be with white people!!! This was for me the last day in this school and my decision of loosing the money I invested on this classes was not just based on this non sense comment from the teacher but on this sad and militant environment that this place is. I hope they use my money wisely and invest in updating the Swiming pool and on good manners and relaxing courses for the teacher ! read more

I have taken my son here since he was 5 months old! He now is 5 and a great swimmer with great skills-- we owe this all to a the team at Swimbabes. His teacher now Alyson knows the perfect approach on how to strengthen the kids and their techniques with the strokes. She can read them so well--He loves to swim!!! Our daughter started at 9 months and is now 2. Teacher Susie has been so amazing the whole way through from start to finish! Our daughter thinks she's a mermaid and loves the water. We started taking our daughter to Swimbabes since she was 7 months old (she is now 21 months). We felt strongly that swim survival lessons were important. We stumbled upon Swimbabes and I must say, this is the best decision we have made. She has had the same wonderful teacher since we started. Our teacher is always happy to explain the techniques with parents and to provide extra guidance to inexperienced moms and babies. I have read previous reviews and find it hard to believe that some of the teachers are not kind and gentle. We have had the opportunity to have gift lessons with each one of the teachers, all having different strengths and approaches, and never having an unpleasant experience. I cannot recommend this place enough. She is a thriving little swimmer with confidence and smiles and we have Swimabes to thank! read more

I've been trying to get my child into classes here for 8 months but they seem to only offer classes that SAHMs can attend. Their evening classes are only offered for babies 17m and older. When I saw they had a class starting this fall on Thursday evenings I was excited because I thought I might finally be able to get my child into a class. I realized that the class starts when my son is 3 weeks shy of 17 months so I emailed to see if I could enroll him anyway. Kelly replied and told me there were no exceptions. I have friends who go here and have had great experiences. This interaction and the lack of availability for younger children have put a bad taste in my mouth. I will be looking elsewhere for swim lessons for my child. I guess they have enough business that they don't care about more. Customer service is key in business and it feels like this is lacking here. read more

We've taken our four year old to Swimbabes for the last year and can't say enough positive things about our experience. We have Teacher Allison and appreciate her firm but kind approach. All six kiddos in our class have advanced so well, have fun and are learning life skills. Children have a tendency to not want to do what challenges them or is out of their comfort zone, as parents it's natural we want to accommodate that fear. Allison's consistent approach of "you can do this" pushes them to achieve things they would otherwise be afraid of trying. In addition to me loving Swimbabes, my daughter is always so proud of the things she learns and can't wait until the next class! Parents, beware and trust your instincts; this is a bad program. It has taken me 2 years to write this review. Swimbabes is traumatic to kids. It compromises children's trust in their parents. I tried it for 6 months. I kept signing up for the next session because the teachers told me that it would be more damaging to deprive my son of the confidence he would gain through accomplishment. When I finally stopped going to classes we were given no refund. When I tried to talk to them about the possibility that this program could possibly not work for every kid, they said that they had not heard of anyone else having problems. This is NOT true. I am finally writing a review because I have met so many other parents who also tried it and regret the trauma they have caused their kids. My son still talks about these "scary swim classes" It feels like a cult. read more

PARENTS PLEASE READ THIS!!!!! As a mother of 3 kids under the age of 3 I feel that it's important to review businesses that involve children. I believe in being fair in that review and honest and sharing my experience so that other parents can decide if a certain business is the right place to send their kids. I'll keep it short. We had Allyson as our teacher at swimbabes and from the beginning she was tough on the kids. There were a few times in our first class that I was less then excited about the way she spoke to my daughter but I was trying to remember that sometimes there is tough love and it's necessary. We got through the intro class ok but when we went into survival class things went terribly wrong. My daughter hadn't learned how to close her mouth when she went underwater so every time she went under she would choke, gag, almost puke and then cry. She began to really not want to go to class and would throw tantrums because she was scared.The last day we went to class my daughter had swallowed a TON of water and wanted to get out of the pool. It was her turn to float with the teacher and my daughter wouldn't let go of her shirt....she was sobbing and terrified. So instead of trying to make her feel even a little better, Allyson looked her dead in the eye and very loudly, in front of all the other kids and parents told my daughter that she needed to stop crying and that this was not her class, this was teachers class. My daughter would try to say something and she would just loudly cut her off with a NO, this is not your class. This embarrassed my 3 year old and myself beyond belief. Who in there right mind would talk to a scared 3yr old like that. I'm all for other people redirecting my child when she's not doing what she's suppose to but I will not tolerate embarrassment or shame.I emailed the owner about this and let her know why we were canceling our class and to be honest she really didn't care. I never got an apology from her about the way my child was treated and it was very very clear that she was standing by her teachers way of handling things. So parents, PLEAS PLEASE read the most recent reviews on all the sites you can find. I think you will see that this place may have been ok at one point but it's not now. read more

This is the first time I have felt strongly enough about a business to create a yelp account and write a review. I think its so important because swimming is a life saving skill, you want your child to cooperate. This place, these instructors, are not kind and gentle. They are NOT skilled in helping children with fears. They will tell you that fears/regression are normal and natural, which may be true... but it doesn't mean that they are approaching it correctly. I have seen parents in tears on more than one occasion, like at least a handful of times, in the short two months we went to here. I did see a small amount of progress with swimming, but it came with a ton of heartache for myself and my children. And honestly I think it came from the daily trips are started taking to the Community Center pool to help undo some of the damage from swim babes to show that water/swimming can be fun and not scary. I understand that mastering the life saving skill is worth some heartache, but there are several swim schools out there that are much better and even more affordable, and teach survival skills instead of water playtime. Although Swimbabes receptionists will lead you to believe that they are the only school in Oregon that focuses on survival rather than the fun in the water swim classes you get at portland parks and rec. We are currently swimming with Josh at Farber Swim School and love it! No more crying/battles on swim days. Aside from the instructors, who are not all that compassionate, the business owner is incredibly rude and very clearly is all about the dollar. There is zero understanding that happens with missed classes/make up classes. This is one of the least accommodating to customers I have ever noticed in a business(and I run my own, so I notice things like this) I have noticed that several of the owners responses to reviews say "been in business for over 70 years" but I will truly be surprised if they last another ten. Maybe 70 years ago there were not other options, but in Portland, with options, parents are going to demand better service. Maybe parents from 50 years ago went for their bad practice both in business and teaching, but todays parents are stronger advocates for their children and have more options. Like many reviews say, their parking is bad, be prepared to walk with your cold wet child to an offsite, but close enough parking lot. I get that the lot is not really something they can change, but they COULD require instructors to park elsewhere, to serve their families better. The building itself is FILTHY. The bathrooms are run down. Its gross. I was even when the pool one time when a child puked everywhere in the pool, and they scooped out what they could and carried on. It was so gross. The front desk staff will tell all about how effective their pool cleaning chemicals are why they are better than chlorine. But they don't tell you that the rest of the building feels like you are going to catch a disease from being in. Dont settle on Swim Babes, do your research and find other swim schools. ******** UPDATE ********** The "B" on my Yelp account is in my married name, my Swim Babes account is in my maiden name. My review is still relevant even thought Kelly (owner) doesn't have a Sarah B. since 2010. We swam at swim babes in 2016. I had already expressed my concerns to the staff, and responses included "Kelly says... " I am not a confrontational person, and was not interested in pursuing a resolution with Kelly directly. I still stand firmly in my belief that this business is all about the dollar and its policies are not supportive of families. And its dirty/gross (the pictures posted are not of their current facility. Maybe you can schedule a tour before signing up? I have noticed some of their recent positive reviews say its not for the faint of heart, and its not! The philosophy is good, but the practice is not. Their expense is much too high for their offerings. Their main teacher (Sara), whom I believe is related to the owner, seems to not enjoy her job. She is mean to the children (babes and toddlers, who often can handle their emotions) and much too forceful towards them. She said she had to be as part of the method. We switched teachers to an Susi who was much, much better. My daughter learned quite a bit. Unfortunately, the Sara was subbing on the final day of class. She pulled my crying and scared child into the water, which scarred her. It's been 3 years and we still have trouble getting her to swim (she was swimming with Susi and did 2 "semesters" of class). The parking lot is small...you may no think this is a big deal until you see how far down the street and the long driveway you have to park if the spots are all taken. They have an additional house on property you fees help to pay for. That house is suppose to be for parties, but the owners son was living in it when we took the class. There are other similar classes in Portland. It may be a long drive, but worth not scarring your children over. read more

We are loving our lessons at Swimbabes. Teacher Kendra is so personable and caring. I never thought I could trust my infant in someone else's hand in the water. My little loves going to class for the water and to see all her little swim friends. I love that the water is kept comfortable and uses alternative methods to high chlorine levels. Parking is always a breeze and thankful for the 5 to 10 mins of water play after class. So glad we found this place and happily rave about it to everyone. Alyson is patient and firm and has a very good rapport with the kids. I'm moved to write a review, so people who are considering taking their babies here will follow through and do it. Yes, the bathrooms aren't 5 stars, or even nearly 3 but they are adequate and honestly, it's not that big of deal. If the Women's room is full of people, you just use the Mens. Usually Dads aren't there, it's Moms who take their kids, so it's not a big deal, either. I typically change in the separate changing rooms, so I can watch my son and he doesn't get wet, since the floor is wet. Walking to lessons from the church parking lot was difficult when my child was in the car seat, since it was heavy but again, really, it's not that big of a deal to me. What really matters is the quality of instruction, which is top notch. People are blown away by what my son can do. He's been in a class here from the time he was three months old. I am no longer worried that he will fall off the dock on a boating trip and drown. He can successfully float on his back for 5 minutes, fully clothed. More than enough time for me to fish him out. He is a great bath taker, gets water in his eyes and doesn't even flinch. He's braver, too than other kids. I don't know if it's the pool experience but it very well could be the reason since he's had to overcome a great deal of fear to get where he is now. Yes, the facilities could be nicer but when it comes down to it, they keep it clean and the entire staff is courteous and welcoming. They have a lot of rules, which I agree, did seem militant and unnecessary at first, since I'm not a big rule person but again, I've since realized it's not that big of deal to me. My son loves going to the pool, he loves playing in all bodies of water, and he can float independently. I am happy with the services I have been provided. I do wish the classes were less money, though. I'm not sure how much farther we can go with him since we have another one on the way and I want the new baby to be able to attend. They don't have a multiple child discount. :( Oh, and another thing-my son wasn't always happy in the pool, either. When he was starting to sit up on his own and get more independent, he wasn't too happy to be on his back in the water. Developmentally, he was more interested in looking around and exploring. It was a really difficult time for both of us, since he cried for about a month of lessons, yet, he worked through it. Seemed it was worth it to me to keep him going, even if he was unhappy at the time. I would rather have him be a little uncomfortable in the pool then drowning in a river. Pretty basic. The pool is warm and it's the place for the kids to work through their discomfort. I found the instructors to be incredible during this time. Also, during Synchrobabies, especially if the kids weren't happy, we were encouraged to take a break. I found it hard to do, since the class was only a half an hour but once, he wanted to nurse so much, we stopped early. No big deal. read more

My daughter and I had our first lesson at swim babes yesterday and I am already so impressed with the way they operate. I was told about swim babes by the owners son while I was pregnant and couldn't wait to get my girl into the program. The receptionist is so down to earth and friendly, she feels like an old friend. She helped us properly fit our swim diaper and answered any questions we had with a smile. Teacher Kendra is very laid back but is also a take charge lady, and I feel very comfortable with her guiding my daughter, even though my girl was a little fussy, haha. I can't believe some of the complaints people have...yes, the parking is limited, yes the shower areas are small, and yes the overflow parking is down the street a bit. These are all things that they talk to you about at your registration appt and for me, personally, a little walk isn't a bad thing at all, though I've never had an issue parking right in front. You have the option to play in the pool for awhile after the lesson to allow others to get showered and changed so it's not as crowded and there are also 2 separate dry changing rooms to use to reduce the traffic build up. We are very happy so far and I can't wait for our lesson next week! read more

Because of the lessons my 2 year old daughter can float on her back in the water kick herself to the edge of the pool and pull herself out of the water. We have been nothing but impressed with Swim Babes. We came to Swim Babes because our three year old daughter (at the time) was not progressing in regular aquatic center lessons and wouldn't put her head under the water. They were so great with her! She is now six and swimming for a local swim team and we are wanting to put her back at Swim Babes to continue to work on her strokes. Our three year old son is now taking lessons and we have been nothing but impressed! The growth you will see in your kids swimming is nothing short of amazing! We owe so much to Swim Babes and it is well worth the money! They help to get your kids safe around water and do many special survival tests that help to encourage your kids to be prepared if they were to be in an unexpected water situation. I have been a member of the swimbabes family for 38 years. My mother started me when I as 6 weeks old, and now all 4 of my children have been through the swimbabes program. I am proud to say, to this day I am a very strong swimmer and my children are all strong confident swimmers and know what to do in a water emergency. Swimbabes is definitely a one of a kind swim school! If you want your child to be water smart and to be a strong swimmer then bring them to Swimbabes. They will first teach your child the skills to save themselves if they fall into water unexpectedly. Then they will teach your child swimming skills in a step by step manner, so each stroke is strengthened and refined. In addition to learning life saving skills they learn socialisation, counting and rhythm. They are Oregon's first swim school and are beyond excellent in there field. The two teachers our daughter has had were great, especially Susi. My daughter, who is now 15 months, actually warmed up to her really quickly, which makes things easier. Our son had a bad experience in the water when he was 4, and had taken classes and private lessons elsewhere, but wasn't making much progress. He took class with Sara, who has a totally different personality from Susi. Sara is tough, which is exactly what our older kid needed. He was even singing her praises after the first class telling us how just making him do it was increasing his confidence. read more

My daughter (4 yrs old) has been swimming at Swim Babes since she was 6 months old. My family likes to go fishing often. Since we are around water often being a strong swimmer is very important to us. Teacher Susi & teacher Alyson have helped my daughter become a very confident and proud swimmer. I never have written a review for anything, however in reading these reviews I had to pipe in. SwimBabes is not a place you take your kid to splash and play and laugh and have a great time, there are other places for that. This facility is about survival. Period. They have an amazing program, it is diligent and I did cry EVERY lesson for the first few times I took my 14 month old - but I realized I will cry so much harder if I lost my baby to drowning. They are working on getting your baby to the point that they are not only comfortable in the water, but the baby WILL turn over and float - in a swimsuit or in a parka with rainboots.. and SURVIVE. Parents - this place is not for the faint of heart - it is a true, bigtime opportunity to give your infant a skill that could save their life. My kids were swimming and floating in our pool without me having to be in the water last summer - my son was 2, yes 2 years old and he was amazing. Anytime he'd end up where he couldn't touch, he would flip over on his back and kick his way to the stairs. The parking is a bit of a hassle, yes... the dressing room isn't the greatest - but I will tell you in the 5 years I've been going here that is all overshadowed when I have a sense of peace around water with my two little boys. If you are serious about teaching your child to survive and thrive around water, give up a little control and let these wonderful experts work their magic. read more
