Dogs on a leash are allowed, it's wheelchair accessible, and kid friendly. If you bring your dog, signs says to pick up after them. The Nepaug dam has a beautiful waterfall with serene sounds. It was built between 1914 to 1916 and created the 951 acre reservoir about 35 feet deep. There is a parking lot; on nice weekend days, it does get full. Overall, it's one of my favorite trails because I can take a stroller/wagon to lug my babies. Also, the view is amazing!

We must have hit 30 different venues in 2020, and we started 2021 by visiting another new place that turned out to be a terrific find. The Nepaug Reservoir Trail is a mile long and is wide, paved, flat and about as easy to walk on as any trail we have visited. We parked at the main parking lot on Route 202, walked through a chain link gate, and found the start of the trail to begin our scenic walk around the reservoir and across the historic 100-year old Nepaug Dam. The 600-foot long dam has a concrete spillway in its center. The spillway is over 100 feet tall and is quite spectacular. The trail around the dam has a few cutouts that serve as observation platforms to take you out over the top of the dam. You will love the view ! We saw quite a variety of folks out there today -young families with strollers, couples of every age, joggers, lots of leashed dogs, and even a few hoverboard operators. What a great way to kick off the New Year.

I've walked the trail in the Collinsville area in the Autumn and it was amazing seeing the foliage. Before crossing the street, there is a crosswalk and button to alert traffic to stop; beware though, some people will just go through the yellow light while you're waiting to cross. There is a little free library and bench once you get across. Once you walk up further, there is a flower bridge; when in season, the flowers are beautiful. Overall, a great trail that connects to the larger Farmington Canal Heritage Trail that goes through multiple towns.

It was clean and free of debris and dog poop. There were quite a few bicyclists out today, so keep your ears open for "on your left" when they come up behind you. The trail hugs the Farmington River and winds through a park with picnic tables, benches, a gazebo, a flower bridge, and gives you some very pretty views of the river. We didn't see any geese or wild birds today, but we did see something odd. I noticed some kind of splashing or commotion in the water, and when I looked carefully, I saw it was a guy swimming in the river! I wonder if he was training for an Ironman or something?

"I'm walkin', yes indeed, and I'm talkin' 'bout you and me…read moreI'm hopin' that you'll come back to me" (Fats Domino) Going for a nice walk on the first day of the year is a real thing. In fact, plenty of Connecticut State Parks had a special program today to ring in the New Year by getting outside, breathing cool crisp fresh air, taking in scenic views, and connecting with nature and other like-minded folk. We didn't visit a State Park today, but we did have a lovely visit to the Farmington River Trail. We picked up the trail just to the right of Crown and Hammer's front door and strolled over the boardwalk, crossing the Farmington River and taking on some impressive views of Canton's old industrial mill buildings, bridges, and river scenery. We couldn't help but notice that some of the boardwalk was in serious disrepair, with rotted, rutted, and deteriorating boards. I was kind of worried about some of the bicycle riding little kids out there taking a tumble. Today's visit did yield a fantastic bonus as we happened to be on the trail when the clock struck noon and were treated to a beautiful carillon concert from a nearby church. The music went on for quite a while and was quite lovely. What a nice way to kick off the new year. Happy New Year to all.

There is a gravel parking lot there as well. Once you cross the street at the light, the trail continues past the Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, the Canton Flower Bridge, Collinsville Walking Trail, Collinsville Pollen Trail, and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail; you do have to cross a few streets to connect all these trails. Overall, a nice historic trail and an easy walk.

"Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is…read moreDo you, Mr. Jones?" (Bob Dylan) I've had the Jones Mountain Preserve bookmarked for quite a while and with yesterday's nice weather we finally made it over. There were a few open spots in the small parking lot, but by the time we left the cars were lined up single file along the side of the road. The forested area really is gorgeous with streams and wood bridges and big boulders and blankets of green moss everywhere. But we also found it to be treacherous to walk on -too many slippery rocks and slippery patches of leaves and too many trees on the path. Even with our walking sticks it was very difficult. We aren't the most experienced hikers in the world and I'm certainly not in primo shape, so although the scenery was breathtaking, the experience was not. We worked our way up to the Red Trail but soon after we hit it, we decided to call it a day, made a U Turn and slowly and carefully inched our way back down. From everything I've read we missed out on the great sites further ahead on the looped trail - a carriage house, a stone bridge, and an overlook with a fantastic view. But none of that was in the cards for us, we were just happy to get back to the car without a sprained ankle or muddy clothes from taking a tumble- which I almost did sliding on a carpet of wet leaves.

Take the red dot trail for a longer route to see the fore mentioned areas, with a moderate incline. Parking is at the trail head and should accommodate 7 vehicles but there is overflow along the road. The most important warning is to stay on the trail, since the area borders a private hunting club. However don't let this deter your visit, since Jones Mountain trails offer a great opportunity to visit nature in a lightly trafficked area.
