It's a lovely, flower-decked half-timbered building, with which my guests from overseas were delighted. The interior is in keeping, too, and everyone enthused about the reasonably priced roast chicken. Not me, though I had the 'Pork Pie Ploughman's', for I don't like a heavy meal in the middle of the day. And, being something of a connoisseur of pies, this was as good as the product of Melton Mowbray although they're not allowed to call it such these days, for 'Melton Mowbray' is now a PDO. When I got inside I was disappointed because immediately you see a "slot machine" (one of those gambling machines you have in English pubs). I have nothing against them but given the history of the place, I think the owner would be better off making sure the place has a historic feel. As for the beer, they had only one cask ale (again disappointed) with all the other beers being the usual (Guiness, Heineken, etc); definitely not what I expected.

There is a reasonable ca park as it gets quite hard to park in the summer. I have visited for lunch and dinner and both were very nicely presented and well cooked. The skate is very tasty and the scampi and Jenga chips are good. The costs can be a little bit higher for lunch but the menu is very similar and therefore for dinner, I thought it was quite reasonable. Peter who used to be at another Billericay restaurant is the restaurant manager and as normal makes sure we get well looked after.
