Amal Indian gooseberry is one new ingredient I have been putting in my green smoothies. Did some research found out how good it is for our health and also for hair health. The bag is in the frozen section also bought the Amal whole (dry) for recipe to make shampoo to use with shikakai and Aritha. The owners are so helpful and the prices are reasonable I end up buying more than I came for . I will make this my go to for all things healthy like turmeric powder and Chana besan... 1 star for having a variety of Indian selections that you can't get anywhere but oh man is the customer service horrible. Every time we go we're faced with a snarky unwelcoming attitude from the woman there. I was attended by a guy once and he was pleasant but the lady there is not. She lost our business today as it was the las straw of being patient, went to buy rice and the lady at the register kept talking to the customer there, my Mom waited 7 minutes and then I went in because my mom needed to use the restroom so she didn't want to wait too long. My mom is of older age so she's more sensitive to that. Then I went in and she stayed talking to the lady then as the lady left while I was standing near the register ready to pay she started talking to another shopping customer in there. I no longer had the patience so I left. So unfortunate but thankfully we found Santa Cruz market who also sales basmati rice, ghee and spice and the customer service there was phenomenal. It is what it is, sadly this was our experience and since we're Spanish speaking I feel the sense of racism was to blame. read more

The most wonderful Nepali/Indian grocery store. I've been shopping at Suva Spicemart for years. The staff and owner are always awesome, personable, and pleasant. It's amazing all the wonderful items they keep in stock, especially considering the size of the store so don't let its size fool you! Suva is the only place I have found that carries Nepali/Indian organic herbs and spices for a very reasonable price. They have an unbelievable selection of beans, lentils, papadums, flours, herbs, spices, rice, ghee, oils, fresh, and frozen items. They have a large selection of incense, beauty products, sculptures, etc . . . They also have refrigerators/freezers with prepared foods as well as other foods to make an amazing Nepali/Indian meal. read more

This place often saves me a drive to Oxnard for some grocery items. Most of the time they are cheaper too. If I need taro, bitter melon, or tiny eggplants I can just ride my bike or walk. (Usually I drive) The family who works and I assume owns the store are so nice. I know everyone complains about kids being lazy these days but these kids will prove differently. I was looking for eggplant recently (the long asian variety, not the european type) and all they had were these little lime sized eggplants. I wasn't sure about them because it's new to me but the owner insisted that I'd like them and that she rotates weekly between the 2 types of eggplant. I tried them and they were the best I've ever cooked. I also send curry and tea to my daughter in college. She loves it too. Try them out. read more

I went to Indian Grocery to pick up some bitter melon. This was my first visit today. They do have bitter melon, but it was the near east variety. While I didn't get bitter melon, I walked out with a bag full of groceries. The best and cheapest fresh ginger in the county as well as ghee and every spice imaginable. The owner is both delightful and accommodating. It was a pleasure shopping there. I'll be back later this week to check out the naan and yogurt. Maybe mustard oil, I don't know how to cook with it, but it sounds good. A really nice store for midtown/downtown. Check it out if you like to cook! read more

I love this store! I was running out of Safi (an Ayurvedic herbal drink) while in Santa Barbara. I went to all the stores in SB that have carry Indian groceries but none of them have Safi. After hearing that Asian Pantry (their former name) in Ventura may have it, I immediately called them. The lady who picked up the phone was very friendly and answered all my questions. She put aside a giant bottle of Safi (500ml) for me so I could pick up the next day. The price ($12 for 500ml) was so much cheaper than where I got my first bottle in LA ($16 for 200ml)! The store took me some time to find because their name is not Asian Pantry anymore, it's Suva Spice Mart (see photo), but if you look out for a sign that says "Indian Grocery", you should be able to find it easily. Suva Spicemart is an absolute gem in Ventura. They have everything you need for excellent Indian food as well as spices and some curry pastes for South East Asian cuisines. I find that traditional grocery stores tend to have such a large markup on Asian food and the quality never compares to Suva Spicemart. Also, various spices can be expensive and their prices are extremely reasonable. The store attendants are so nice and helpful as well! I would recommend Suva to anyone looking to experiment with or enhance your Indian cooking. read more

THE GREAT: First off I have to mention the owner. As I remember my experience, she was the first thing that popped into my head. She's got character as colorful as the culture and food of India and an infectious attitude and smile. By the time I left I wanted to be not just her customer but her friend. Great at suggesting things when I asked and not upset or phased when I declined some of them. I could tell she was honestly interested in my palate and not just trying to sell me things. I only went for a box or two of premade curry/masala mixes and hoping they'd have papadums. When I saw the prices compared to what I used to pay on the east coast I just couldn't stop shopping. Despite the fact that the store isn't particularly large, I had to keep putting items at the counter and go back for more because I kept seeing more and more things I wanted. I ended up leaving with fresh curry leaves, five boxes of curries/masalas, five packages of papadums, two packages of lentils, a box of British *TETLY* tea (better selection AND price than the British store on downtown Main St), two packages of samosas, two locally made naans, bhatura, chapatti, garlic/ginger paste, and whatever else I'm forgetting. Basically I left with four full bags of groceries for about $60. Good luck doing that at even the "cheaper" grocery stores Ralph's. THE ALMOST GREAT: The only thing I would change about the store is it's location. It's not in a bad neighborhood or difficult to get to or anything, I just think that if it was on downtown Main St instead of East Main St it would get the business it deserves. I would love to see the store have a booth at one of the many farmer's markets offering free samples of papadums and selling fresh curry leaves, local naan, and everything that could possibly fit under the tent. People would flock the booth like nobody's business. Overall: Note there's no "the good:" and "the bad:", nothing is good or bad, only great and almost great. If you asked me " would I return?" I would tell you that you misspelled "when will I return?" The only thing holding me from going back right now is that I haven't ran out of anything I bought yet. What would I change? Exposure. Perhaps putting some business cards at restaurants like Bollywood or Himalaya (my two Ventura favorites which would have let me know to go sooner), getting a booth at the Taste of Ventura or farmer's markets, or even creating a FaceBook page for us younger generations to like and share. I love Indian food and they had more than what I knew I wanted. If you do as well, you won't be disappointed. read more

Suva Spicemart is a sparkling exotic gem in the heart of midtown Ventura. I called to find out if they have bitter melon for my Uncle who has diabetes. Jevina said they carry the whole fresh fruit and juice and powder form. I popped in and was warmly greeted by Jevina who showed me around and helped me find all the bitter melon I needed as well as a couple of other things good for diabetes. When I asked her about something for my digestion she gave me detailed instructions for making a classic Indian kichery, and showed me what I would need. There was also an elder Indian customer who she called "Uncle" which she explained is a term of respect for all elder men in Indian culture, and that all elder women are called "Auntie". Well I'm eating my delicious homemade kichery now and dreaming of the next time I pop in to Suva for another lesson in Indian culture and cuisine. Thank you Jevina!
