I should mention a conflict of interest here, I used to work for the Sutton Observer as a paper-boy between 1998 and 2000. It served me well and got me into the job market. However, it doesn't get mentioned on my CV these days so I reckon that gives me enough critical distance to write about it.
The Sutton Observer, when it gets delivered, is a free weekly paper for the folk of Sutton Coldfield. Its pages are usually awash with news of community and fund-raising events, complaints about roadworks and kids who've held a tea-party at their infant school. Most people probably throw it straight in the bin, however I always flick through it as its good that there are still some things in this world which encourage a sense of community.
My personal favourite section is the notes from the meetings of places such as the Townswomen's Rotary Guild or best of all the Sutton Coldfield & District Gardeners Mutual Improvement Association (or SCDGMIA for short). Little things like that show that the post-post-modern world hasn't completely alienated everyone yet. read more
