This rescue was easy to work with. They had the dogs in open and closed areas and they all seemed so happy. Make sure to have the adoption application completed before arrival. We drove up from Roseville because of a puppy we saw on the website. We arrived we were able to meet the pup and hang out with her for awhile. Unfortunately we couldn't get her that day because our application wasn't filled out before we came up, but it was ok. We instantly fell in love with a pup there. 2 days later we got a phone from the rescue saying they approved application and that we can pick up the pup. We drove up a couple days later, they were thorough and gave us all the medical background. In all, we couldn't be happier with our pup and the process of getting her. read more

We were interested in one of their mastiff puppies, drove 50 minutes to see them AFTER calling twice, no answer, we got there and the lady physically blocked the entrance by standing in the doorway and holding the door. Very rude, She was snippy and asked if that was the only breed we were looking for, and wouldn't let us look at the dogs. If they got better staff, then yes, I would return and try to adopt again. I drove 4 hours to Gridley from Southern Oregon. I was warmly greeted, and they brought out the dog I was interested in. They were very thorough with details about the dog's length of stay and personality. The dog was very anxious and timid, they allowed me to go back and sit with her in the kennel to give her one on one time to get to know me. I not only adopted the one I went for, but another sweet heart, unknown to me the girls were already best friends which made the trip less stressful. I couldn't be any more impressed with a rescue. Most don't know the little details that I was given on personalities. The place and dogs were clean and well cared for. The adoption price was extremely reasonable. Some places in California and Oregon are quite high. Although I had a 4 hour return drive, I would take that trip again I am so pleased with my new family members. We were bonded during our trip and I could feel their excitement to get to their new home. They have proven to be loyal, and great watch dogs and companions. I would definitely not deal with this organization! I had an awful experience with their staff. I paid good money for a dog with the assumption that I would in return get a new companion. The dog was presented as shy. The dog was more than shy. I tried to work with her, but she had such extreme Anxiety that I feared for her safety. I realized that she would be in danger if I left her at all. I made the heart wrenching decision to return her. I was promised a refund. They have yet to follow thru on their promise to return my money or even respond to my calls or emails. My biggest fear is that others will be left like me , without a new friend and left to feel like a I was a failure. I did nothing wrong, but they treated me like garbage. read more

We got our dog Charlie from them and it was a very positive experience. Charlie is special needs -- born without one toe on a back paw, so he lifts that paw now and then. They gave him a chance and matched him with our family. We are so grateful! There was interest from other people. It was a bit of a trek up to Gridley from Roseville but worth it. read more

Good luck trying to adopt a dog here. They put these animals through more than they need to. We went into the rescue expecting to be able to adopt a dog this weekend, we've been really thinking about it and we are really responsible dog owners, only to find out it will take weeks to find out if we can get her? We met a sweet dog and fell in love with her and it breaks my heart that she has to sit there being homeless for extra weeks than she has to. If you ask me this is just CRUEL! I had such a horrible experience with this rescue. I found the perfect puppy here and they called me and let me know I could adopt her that weekend. They called me the next day and told me some dogs got sick and they had to quarantine the shelter for two weeks. I made sure that my puppy was going to be on hold for me and they assured me they would call to let me know when I could pick her up. I called multiple times to check on the puppy during those two weeks and never received a response. The day that marked 2 weeks I drove to the shelter thinking I would be bringing home my new best friend. I arrived right as they opened and approached the owner and a volunteer. The owner got in her car and drove away, leaving the volunteer to explain to me that they had adopted out the puppy promised to me. No one called me to explain this had happened. I was heartbroken and all they could say was they were sorry that the mistake happened and they had emailed me.... How impersonal is that? I spent two weeks getting my home ready for this puppy, thinking of names, and getting all around excited about my new best friend and an email is all they think should be done? I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

Very inconsistent and perhaps ethically inappropriate and questionable practices at Sutter Buttes Canine Rescue in Gridley: We got out little dog there a few months ago. There were several problems from the start. Monday after picking her up, I took dog to my local vet for a "first check-up for adopted dog", which the vet offered for free. They found that she had a microchip. I was surprised because the Rescue mentioned nothing anywhere about the dog being microchip! This started a research process trying to find out for several days if the dog had actually been processed properly, i.e., did they check for a previous owner?? On my own, I managed to find out the dog was unwanted by previous owner. Whew! Second, I go to license her at our local County Sheriff's and they tell me I am missing paperwork from the Rescue! Sutter Buttes failed to provide me with the dog's Rabies Certificate, though they claimed they had her vaccinated. This started a month-long process backtracking to find the agency (Yuba County Animal Care Services) that administered the Rabies vaccine and receiving from them, not the Rescue, the actual Rabies Certificate required by law!! During this time, we were getting to know our dog. Sutter Buttes Canine did a less than stellar job describing her on their site/PetFinder. They described has as being good with all people and friendly with other dogs. Well, that would be a resounding, "No". Our dog is aggressive, barks and nips at all new people anywhere, all the time, and same or worse with all dogs. Let's say that our forever friend is a troublesome one, even though the Rescue did not alert us of any of this. Not good. Not recommended. The dog had been spayed at least a year earlier by a different organization, no rabies, perhaps basic care for a few days, deworming...Oh, and the fee? $250. read more

My wife Marge posted a review regarding our adoption back in June of this year. I would like to provide an additional comment . The shelter staff person - Amy has a difficult job!! and one that most likely doesn't get a lot of appreciation for what the staff goes through receiving and parting ways with each and every canine they take in. Our adoption experience could have gone much better than it did. I truly hope that Maya found her forever home and is happy. It was HEART BREAKING having to bring Maya back to the shelter and say good bye after an unsuccessful adoption. Many factors came into play having to make this decision, and it wasn't taken lightly. The shelter owner / facilitator Yvonne did return our adoption fee, and apologized for the unpleasant experience we encountered. So having said that, Thank You Sutter Buttes Canine Rescue for what you do, Marge and I do appreciate what you do for all the canine's that sadly have to enter your rescue facility. read more

First of all this rescue does a wonderful job in rescuing abandon pets and I commend them for that. However they told us on Tuesday that a dog was not yet adopted and to come look at him. We drove the 60 miles to looked at the dog. My boyfriend who had just lost his dog of 12 years loved him and of course we filled out the paperwork. After listening to Darren's antics for over an hour (he is a good person don't get me wrong but a little over the top) Darren AGAIN Told us he was NOT adopted and that they would be in contact with us. My boyfriend who was anxious to get the dog called and was told Amy wouldn't be back until Thursday and when we called on Thursday we were told not until Monday. My boyfriend being quite anxious to adopt this dog called Thursday evening and Amy answered her phone and said Oh he was adopted last Saturday and they haven't picked him up yet. What the heck????? Couldn't we have been told that on Tuesday and saved us the time, the drive and mainly the disappointment?????? Again I think what they do is great but they need some organization to at least be able to tell people the dog is adopted. They of all people should understand when someone falls in love with a dog what a disappointment it is to say you can't have him. As of today, the dog is still on the web page for adoption.
