The lady pretty much told me to hurry up, then spoke in a different language to her coworker. I'm visiting from the USA, and the bakery is located in a touristy area (easy to find since it's the only pink building). Quite small, so there is no café area, but the tartes and breads and cakes and biscuits are all delicious and typical of Switzerland. They also make Basler läckerli, a specialty in the area, which are small, rather hard spice biscuits with candied fruits. Try their plum tarte, it's a must if you stop in -- there are small versions and larger ones. Price is on the expensive side, but it's worth a splurge once in a while.

Sutter bakeries seem to be on every street corner throughout Basel. This location is fairly small, so the selection is not always great. The one near Wettsteinplatz is much larger and includes a cafe. Their consistency is the key - no matter which location you find, you'll get a good quality bread or pastry. Plus, several of their locations (including the one in SBB) are open on Sundays, which is rare for stores, let alone bakeries.

Everything was aligned on the shelves and the floors looked like they had been licked clean by elves. They offered an immense selection of fresh baked breads and pastries, and four helpful, smiling staff members were ready behind the counter to help us. There was a small grocery section to one side, where we could pick up eggs, yogurts, milk, etc. Behind this grocery section you could see the bakery in action, behind a glass window. While staying with friends in Aesch, we stopped here almost every morning for various items. I was particularly fond of their apple and custard tart, which was mind-blowingly good in the morning with a cup of hot coffee, especially after a nice, long run down by river. Both colleagues were then talking to each in German while myself and my mother figured out the order ourselves. With the only tiny surface available which is inconveniently placed before the card machine, my mother tried to put a lid on her coffee and a rude insensitive customer pushed into her to pay and the coffee spilled all over her hand. The person behind the counter said nothing and only thing she did was hand over a dirty cloth. It was the worst service I have ever had in a cafe, which is a pity because the goods they sell are of high quality.
