This was a delight. We were permitted to bring our small pups in with us in carriers. The grounds are lovely. There are vines growing on a pergola, a wood fired oven out on the veranda area. We sat inside as the wind was quite strong that day. There were three in our party. Two of were looking to enjoy a tasting of red wines and one was interested in white wine. Brandon greeted us and spent some time getting to know our likes before we started trying wines. He also let us know about their pizzas, which sounded like it would be a good accompaniment to our activity. The specialty pizza for the day was marinara, cheese, pepperoni, salami and roasted green chile. We put in our order and continued our chat with Brandon. Between my husband and I, we tried their Malbec, Telluride Cab Sav, Merlot Signature, and the Dutton Family Reserve. My daughter, who prefers a white wine, tried their Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and Amber Wine. The pizza went well with everything. We ended up getting bottles of three of our favorites. This was a lovely experience. I would like to plan ahead more next time and arrange for a tour. read more

Don't put many reviews out here. But when you find a hidden gem, you need to tell people about it. Sutcliffe was side diversion since our plans changed from the government shutdown. What a diversion. About 15 miles outside of Cortez this winery does some pretty amazing wines. We sampled several and enjoyed them all. Not a huge food menu but great for snacking and sampling there drinks. Autumn special pizza was delicious. Great people serving the fare also helps to enhance the atmosphere. Along with the two legged hosts, many four legged hosts around as well. We got to know Toby and Goose quite well. In Cortez and looking for something different, highly recommend this gem. The views of the vineyard and mountain side only enhance the experience. read more

We didn't know what quite to expect and boy were we pleasantly surprised. The drive through the canyon was incredible and our tasting experience was fabulous. We don't consider ourselves wine snobs but the caliber of the wine Sutcliffe produces ranks right up there with those we've tasted in Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, Temecula & the Verde Valley. We look forward to bringing others here in the future to enjoy what we found to be a "worth coming back" experience. read more

Good wines, friendly service, and spectacular scenery. I didn't expect such good wine in SW Colorado, but their wines are really lovely.

What a surprising gem this winery is! In a remote location, surrounded by ancient mountains and rolling pastures, the location alone is worth the visit. But then you try the wine - wow! Colorado wine is know for textured mineralogy, deep flavors, and boy does this winery deliver. We were served by Damon and found him to be very helpful, professional and knowledgeable of the wine he poured. Big fans of the spicy Syrah and bold Merlot. Can smell the dark fruit and herbal aromas. Do not miss this winery! read more

One of the most enjoyable vineyard experiences I've ever had. Walked in as the harvest crew was having lunch and got to meet the people that harvest the grapes as well as the gentleman that brews the wine. They shared wine, hospitality, and good laughs with us. The wine itself is incredible. Who would have thought Colorado wine would be so delicious? Walked around the vineyards for a short while after which was equally as enjoyable. There's pear and apple trees with a magnificent mountain backdrop. Also, make sure try the honey made from the bees on-site. It was so good I had to buy a jar to bring home! If you have the chance, I highly recommend spending an afternoon at this vineyard! read more

Sutcliffe Vineyards is by far one of the best wineries we've been to ever. If you're near the a area it is a must to stop by. It is off the main roads, but worth a great place to venture to. When we arrived John Sutcliffe greeted us immediately and made us feel welcome. We enjoyed a tasting on their outside patio area with a great view of the McElmo Canyon. John was a gracious host who told us about his vineyard and how each wine is made. It did start to rain on our visit, (one of the few rains ever) so we went inside and enjoyed a charcuterie board(very good). The Sutcliffe GM Chloe helped us in there and was a wonderful person to talk to about their wine as well. They make some of the best wine we've had, I preferred the Telluride Red. We signed up to be part of their wine club while here(got our 1st shipment the other, very excited about that). The vineyard/house is very scenic, wine is great, but the people here is what made the experience one we will always remember. John and Chloe are great people and have a fantastic place! read more

Driving from Hovenweep National Monument to Durango and we came upon Sutcliffe Vineyards. It was a blessing and a wonderful side note to an otherwise normal travel day. We walked in and probably caught the staff off-guard considering we stopped by in the middle of a snowstorm. They were amazing to us! Invited us in and were very hospitable. They shared their history with us and provided us with an incredible wine tasting. We signed up for one of their memberships as a Christmas gift and are excited to see what gifts our loved ones receive. Overall, a great atmosphere with a fantastic, welcoming staff! Never in my entire life have I met someone as rude as the owner of Sutcliffe Vineyards. After hiking the canyon of the ancients our small group felt that it would be fun to take a wine tour and have a glass of wine while recuperating. Two of the ladies who are not big wine drinkers wanted to split a glass of wine. The owner threw up his arm, angered at the request and essentially kicked us off the property. Upon entering the property there is a sign that restricts entry by any government employees. I have no idea why but he reminds me of some sort of survivalist or something. I really don't recommend wasting your time going here as there are other vineyards in the area and much closer to town. If I were allowed to give negative stars I would give it a -5 stars!!! read more

When we arrived at Sutcliffe Vineyards, we were greeted warmly. As the time went on, more people showed up. John had told us initially that it was $10 for 3 each, red & white. There was 7 of us, so we anted up. before we left, he had given us 2 each!! He had also told me (since I'm not a red drinker) that he had a surprise for me. I'm still waiting!!! I did buy a bottle of Nectar Riesling & brought it home. I am having a little taste right now--fantastic!! The cashier was a bit snippy, too. She seemed to not believe me when I told her we had paid John the tasting fees. IF in the area again, I might go back, but would not make a special trip. read more

We visited Sutcliffe Vineyards on our honeymoon, and we had one of our favorite winery experiences yet. John Sutcliffe shared so many wonderful wines with us, and we enjoyed talking with him about wine, life, and travels. All the wines we had are spectacular. We're big red wine drinkers and not often as drawn to whites, but every white wine we tried was delicious as well. We took several bottles with us to enjoy the rest of our honeymoon. The winery itself is beautiful as its nestled in the southwestern Colorado hills. We will definitely be back anytime we're in Colorado. read more

First of all the tasting is $10 for 4 very small pours! No tasting room. You sit outside (it's nice and pretty) but you get no tasting notes, no price sheet and not much of an explanation. We asked for all reds even tho they offered 2 red and 2 whites, and she said ok. Staff was not friendly and the owner greeted us and said hello but after we finished and did not buy the owner walked by me and said we would need to vacate the table soon..... they were not even have full! Very rude! If you don't buy dont expect a warm good bye because you literally might be asked to leave. We were enjoying a great conversation with another couple, we were not doing anything in any way! I like 2 of the wines we tasted and was going to reconsider buying but not after being asked to leave soon! read more

My wife and I like to visit wineries while in vacation. I highly recommend John Sutcliffe's Vineyards. They have a good selections of wines for tasting, a very friendly staff, and are set in an amazing location. Very picturesque with views of the orchards and surrounding four corners topography. We had the bonus of getting to spend some quality time talking with John who is a real gentleman and great conversationalist. The wines were all quality with unique and contrasting flavors. Unlike some other wineries in the area, John makes his wines with grapes from his own vineyards. We bought a few bottles of wine to take home to the front range.
