    Per the 5th-level Cleric spell, raise dead, a target must be gone no longer than 10 days. The spell also closes mortal wounds but does not restore missing body parts. I'm dropping some mean D&D funk because such a spell was cast on Sushi Hut. I don't even think rigamortis had set in. This is not a zombie, and like many Japanese horror films, the soul that returned is not the same, deciding to call itself Sushi 97. Jenner went through a bigger change than this. Sure, there are new owners, but they obviously adopted the "ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. Which is too bad because I can't help but see the old location. Even the hanging lamps were carried over. About the only contribution of individuality is the outside sign. I wasn't a huge fan of Sushi Hut; I found the selection lacking. I would order a mixed sushi combo, and half the pieces would be the same. And with So Good basically across the street, the latter was always my preferred location. Sushi Hut suffered from a complex of being too close to larger competition, like a black hole stripping the surface off a nearby red dwarf. In defense, it wasn't bad looking. I've seen worse, though I'm still disappointed at the lack of bar stools--a hallmark of the cuisine I dearly miss. At least the new name is somewhat original, referencing the highway its located on. I mean it's not like you can call it "Highway Sushi" ...because that sounds kind of disgusting, like something picked off the road. And what's with the logo? A fish eating sushi, reminiscent of the ouroboros--the snake eating its own tail. That would work if this was an all you can eat place, which it thankfully isn't. On the first visit to Sushi 97, I ordered the 97 Special--spicy salmon, avocado, tobiko, and tempura. I saddled said plate with a sushi combo, dreading the oversized cuts that at this point is tragically expected given the local trend. The sushi combo came with miso, and I miss miso. Correction, I miss complementary miso. And it was good to, no, excellent. The closest to the Suzuran-standard I've seen yet. Hmm...Suzuran-standard, I think that's going to be a thing from now on. So, miso, par-Suzuran. And the 97 Special roll was close to the classic kamikaze rolls from Suzuran's past. After ten long years, someone has finally delivered the goods...kind of. The second visit was marred by the unfortunate oversized cuts I has dreaded, especially with the specialty rolls. Not leaving it alone, I brought up the issue with the owner. She commented that in the future, I could ask for "double-cut", and they'd accommodate me. I wasn't aware this was an option, and I'm curious if that's a compromise every place offers. If I walked into Tokyo Sushi, would they understand such a request. And when asking for double cut, would I get double the pieces? I like that the option is there but shouldn't smaller cuts be assumed? Bite-size sushi should be the default, not the option. There is also an issue with the rice. It should be light, fluffy, and not dense. This was not the latter, and in fact was so much the former, several nigiri was falling apart as they were lifted from the plate, indicating a lack of pressure in forming the rice. It's a delicate operation, akin to Goldilocks, not too firm, not too light, the perfect balance. Finally, a point on presentation--I miss wooden serving trays. I keep seeing places with them behind the bar, but I seldom receive them. That being said, as I started removing the sushi from my plate, I found images of Sushi underneath, like staring at a parallel reality. If I looked deep enough, would I see myself without a goatee and a full head of hair eating the same meal? I would place Sushi 97 at -1 under Suzuran. Not as good, but really close. The service was remarkably good for a sushi restaurant--when I dropped my sticks, they were immediately replaced. They have a bit of a climb ahead, but they are doing everything right with what they have. If they had bar stools, I'd be satisfied that my long search for a local sushi place was over. It is better than So Good, better than Sendo, and unquestionably better than Wasabi. I've had better, Banff, Vancouver, Calgary, Hong Kong. This is not only good for PG, but actually good. There are some rough edges to be smoothed, but I for one am looking forward to the polish. Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Presentation: 3/5 Value: 4/5 Recommendation: 4/5

    I've had time to mull it over, scrutinize the photos and memories, desperate to come a conclusion,…read morea decisive critique on Mr. Sushi. And I've decided that it's...fine. It's okay. It does enough right with little wrong to squeeze out a marginal recommendation. I know readers prefer a clear-sighted score, but I sit firmly on the knife-edge, therefore I expect to be cut. Mr. Sushi's name is the latest in a depressingly long line of appalling titles for local Japanese restaurants. Sushi Hut, Wasabi Sushi, and now Mr. Sushi--I imagine the next will be called "Sushi, Sushi!". I did a web search after typing that and found four restaurants called that. Only a matter of time given the local trend. I mean, if it was called Miss Sushi, like "Missushi", I would have given it marks. So a boring name and a bad location. And I mean bad location. It's hard enough just to spot it from the road, and it's located far enough from the majority of the city's population to make a detour inconvenient. Eight tables make it an average if not above average-sized restaurant for its class. I did appreciate the J-Pop casually drifting from the speakers. It has a sushi bar, a narrow one, like your ass is half-sitting on the table behind you. It appears more a waiting area for takeout. The décor is plain with the only distinction being the numerous cheap decorations, mostly paper lamps and umbrellas. One TV without volume was utterly ignored by the crowd. There were no utensils on the tables other than sticks, which is actually a mark in their favor. Let's get to the food, because I ordered a lot. The miso was fantastic, reminding me of the lamented Suzuran; taste buds don't forget. The tuna tataki looked good and tasted better, but given its warp speed delivery, I questioned its freshness. I mean it was Food Hydrator from Back to the Future Part 2 fast. Still, damned good, perhaps a man can love again. As I waited for the main course, I carried a conversation with another customer about ethnicity equating quality, and I've said repeatedly to those that listen (Mom) that it doesn't matter, that I've seen the best sushi restaurant in town run by Koreans. I couldn't tell you the origin of the chef at Mr. Sushi, and I won't investigate...because it doesn't matter. My sushi was presented on wood with little flare. I did consider the portion small for the price, two nigiri, two sashimi, six cuts of roll for $13, and once again, delivered on the heels of the Roadrunner. The rolls were cut a decent size, though a view of a customer's plate concerned me, foreshadowing possible disappointment. The nigiri were a tad on the large size, enveloping the rice like a beached whale. I ended up ordering a rainbow roll to test my concern. And I was right; they cut their sushi too large. Not to the scale of the competition, but big enough to require attention. It's doesn't take long for an extra cut in a roll. As for the nigiri, fish is more expensive than rice so why not divide each one in half. I'll praise the quality of the fish though, some of the best sashimi and nigiri I've had in town for some time...which admittedly doesn't actually say very much. I miss robust sushi combos, where you received a real broad assortment. There appears no mixed platter on this menu. The miso, appetizer, and meal was filling, but the total pushed over $25. That's not really a bad thing as I've said I'll pay extra for good sushi, but I think there needs to some issues ironed out before that cost is justified. There's no doubt when all things are considered, Mr. Sushi is about five to six dollars more than its competition. I'd love there to be lunch specials that include miso and an assortment of whatever the chef has ready to serve that afternoon. Call me spoiled; Suzuran did things right. But that being said, Mr. Sushi hasn't angered me, call it mild disappointment, but there lies hope for improvement. It doesn't help that it's clear on the opposite side of town. In Vancouver, a 25-minute drive is nothing, barely a hop, but in Prince George, it does require driving past every alternative, no matter how inferior they are. The Hart is lucky. For once, and I do mean for once, they finally have a restaurant that isn't complete crap. It needs improvement though. Cut their nigiri a smaller, mix up a lunch special, and give me a call, because I will return. Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Presentation: 3/5 Value: 2.5/5 Recommendation: 3/5

The be to box I had was delicious and the portion sizes were larger than I expected. I was definitely full by the end of my meal. The chicken teriyaki was some of the best I've ever had. It had a smoky taste to it and was outstanding.

A lot had changed over the past year. The inside was completely different. Re-modeled and looked nicer. I placed my order to go and was told it be 40 minutes. I was a little shocked (and slightly annoyed because they didn't seem that busy.) There were only 2 other people dining in and eating already so I was a little taken aback. I said it was fine though, the order was paid and I went to grab a coffee at Tim Horton's to pass the time. I returned to the restaurant and sat down while I waited for my food to be ready. Some minor observations; there were two younger people working along side the sushi chef. One of them a young man looked very dazed and confused. Everyone in general was very quiet. No communication what so ever. I miss the older gentleman who used to work there who had a very lively bubbly personality and always greeted you so warmly talking to you while you waited. And the wait was never that long. I'm not sure I'll return. The premium California roll seemed to be missing from my tray and after waiting as long as I did for something real simple; Sushi Star though a bit more far is really good and their staff always seem really lively and more personable.

I'm leary of eating raw fish when in small towns and will only trust recommendations. We're well traveled and have had sushi in Japan. So imagine my surprise when PG had some delectable sushi to offer. Stopped by with the family on a Monday night thinking it couldn't be very busy but I was so wrong. The inside was practically full and some were even dining al fresco. We were greeted immediately and given a table thanks to one customer who agreed to move to a smaller table. Right away, menus were handed to us and drink orders taken. No playing around here. Waters arrived in no time. The menu is expansive and has a lot to offer for all different tastes. We ordered a couple of Bento boxes, a noodle soup, some salads, tempura, and maki rolls. On my way to the rest room I passed their takeout coolers that were full of delicious looking sushi, salads, and drinks. A steady stream of takeout customers came for grab and go meals. By the time I returned to the table, food had already started arriving fast and furious. Everything was fresh and the cooked food was piping hot. The portions were very generous. We enjoyed every bite and left stuffed. The place is small but clean and there are lots of servers. Add this restaurant to a short list of sushi restaurants on my "definitely will return" list.

The atmosphere is kind of dark, but upscale. Others at our table were celebrating a birthday and another celebrating their anniversary. So, it's safe to say, this is a good place for a special occasion. I ordered the Samurai Combo that had steak, chicken and shrimp. It also comes with miso soup, a salad with their house ginger dressing, rice and mango ice cream for after. So, along comes our teppanyaki chef, Nook. He's friendly, funny and a real professional. He knows what he's doing and he does it very well. Every component he produced on that flat top was excellent. The steak was super tender and flavorful, the teriyaki chicken tasty, and the shrimp was plump and moist. The accompanying PILE of vegetables was crisp and fresh. The only downside was the rice was mushy (over steamed) and the show, while performed well, seemed somewhat "abbreviated" vs our first experience and what we've seen at other places. It should be noted that this is a rather high-end restaurant and prices reflect that. But, for those special moments in life, it's a great place to ... indulge. Service is the best. Our server, Sharon, was friendly and efficient. I hope we don't wait so long for the next visit.
