Tauranga's best sushi establishment. It is a little on the pricy side but well worth it.

Beach Sushi - Bento boxes (chicken teriyaki and pork katsu)

This is a newer sushi restaurant in Waihi beach. They have a wide variety of ready made sushi that…read moreyou can grab and go or you can order something made to order. The orders come with free miso soup ( yay free) and it's pretty good too, which is a super bonus. There are also a lot of hot asian foods available that are on offer like spicy ramen, udon, and teriyaki and rice dishes. We ordered the chicken teriyaki bento and pork katsu bento boxes and then also got a couple of one off rolls like the avocado and salmon, katsu roll, shrimp tempura roll and a couple more. All of them were really satisfying and the bento boxes were really generously portioned and good. It was big enough to share with my husband and we really enjoyed them. The bentos included a variety of foods like rice, the teriyaki, a veggie fritter, some sushi rolls, among some other foods we were able to try. The manager told us that the bentos change seasonally and in the summer they have fresh fruit and salads too. The owners were really friendly and had great service. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area or even a bit away. We drove by from Tauranga and it was worth the drive.

Good to get in before the lunch time and dinner time rush although they will always make fresh sushi packs for you if you ask! Food is always fresh and a great value for price. I was hungry for some katsu, coming from Hawaii I haven't had Chicken Katsu with Rice in awhile. And I noticed they were one of the few places opened after 6pm. Japanese restaurants in my experience make good chicken katsu, which is usually served in a bento with fresh cabbage and lots of Tonkatsu sauce. I love bentos, so I ordered a $22 chicken katsu bento that's right a $22 chicken katsu bento. The quantity was enough to make me full but I thought it was pricey for katsu. Also I noticed that they had Asahi beer stocked, but when I asked for an Echigo beer, the waitress looked at me clueless like,"what? Huh?" And then the other waitress told my wife," ohh we're not Japanese, we're Chinese." Which kinda poked a needle in my joy balloon. When the bentos came, the katsu was ok, didn't come with enough katsu sauce for all of the katsu, and the cabbage tasted funny as it didn't seem fresh, and the rice portion they gave was small. It was an overpriced meal for ok quality, but I noticed that they do have $10 donburis with teriyaki chicken. But I'm not a fan of teriyaki. Though my meal was ok, the restaurant itself gets points for cleanliness and space. It looks like a Japanese restaurant but run by Chinese workers? Idk. Maybe I'm too harsh but give me more rice for $22 lol. I could get the same meal for $5 at home from L&L mini plate. Sorry.

The sushi at Fresh Sushi is indeed fresh, but also a fusion of local foods and produce. Pukekohe…read morebeing a veritable bread basket for Auckland City. The thing I love about this eatery is that the food is honestly good, tasty and priced very competitively. I would certainly pay more to eat this sushi and would pay less for other sushi around town, as other do not compare for taste, value for money or portion sizes. Fresh Sushi do not scrimp on salmon, chicken or avocado and the rice content in each of their sushi rolls is far less than inferior sushi sellers. The row in the salmon sushi is fresh and pleasantly pops when eaten. This is great for me as I go to the gym and prefer lean protein and salads over carbs!! The fusion element of what would be traditional sushi is that the chicken and beef is fried as in Katsu. The fat content is obviously higher, but eaten in the appropriate portions and in combination with an exercise plan, is not a bother. The only problem I have is that my will power just melts away and I usually end up buying two packs of 8 pieces. So much for willpower. Also available on the menu are Katsu meals. Teriyaki meals, Donburi, Tempura and Nigiri. I might try those one day. But for now I'm happy to feed my sushi addiction here...for me, no other sushi joint gives me the feeling of culinary indulgence as Fresh Sushi in Pukekohe.
