This should be a given with any provider you go to, but too often medical paternalism still rules the day, where you are treated like a child who is to be told what to do with your own body. That attitude doesn't fly with me, and thankfully Dr. Merupula does not have this mentality. She has accommodated my requests for additional testing I want for my own information, which some previous providers have inexplicably vetoed, as if the cost is coming out of their own pockets, or as if I'm not sophisticated enough to understand the results. She also respects my decisions to say "no thank you" to certain one-size-fits-all 'standard of care' protocols that are not right for me, without argument or pushback. (This includes the ability to communicate and explain what is going on); and 3rd: do I feel like the doctor really cares about me - are they humanistic in their approach or bedside manner? Then another doctor told me it was an infection and put me on antibiotics. That didn't work. Then I was referred to Dr. Tufft. He literally was the ONLY person that could help me. After 7 months of dead ends, he took one look at me and said "I think you are allergic to your dissolvable stitches," and guess what? He was right. That was the very FIRST appointment with him. He put me on a pain free regiment of lotions and potions and in just over 2 months, I was completely healed. Today was my final appointment with him. The man who saved my life in my hands. I hesitated for several weeks before calling as I was afraid of yet again being looked at like I was a nut case. After nearly 20 physicians in various fields left me to die, this genius figured out exactly what I had. It was so rare & out there my HMO didn't believe him. UCSF & Stanford docs weren't there for me either. But we proved all of them wrong with a biopsy and such. He went up to bat against them more than once for me & many attacked him in the process. I worked in a 1000 Rx a day pharmacy and these people are doctor shoppers whose regular doctors won't give them narcotics so they seek out other doctors and then get disappointed and aggravated when they don't get their drugs. This makes me want to give Dr. K more stars! You don't go to a doctor to get drugs. You go to a doctor to get treated to feel better. It doesn't always require drugs, and you should be glad if you don't need them.
