This should be a given with any provider you go to, but too often medical paternalism still rules the day, where you are treated like a child who is to be told what to do with your own body. That attitude doesn't fly with me, and thankfully Dr. Merupula does not have this mentality. She has accommodated my requests for additional testing I want for my own information, which some previous providers have inexplicably vetoed, as if the cost is coming out of their own pockets, or as if I'm not sophisticated enough to understand the results. She also respects my decisions to say "no thank you" to certain one-size-fits-all 'standard of care' protocols that are not right for me, without argument or pushback. You can judge a physician by 3 parameters: 1st: does he or she have a conflict of interest that compromises putting your needs first? 2nd: is the doctor clinically competent -- does he or she know what they are doing and know when to refer to someone else when they are unsure? (This includes the ability to communicate and explain what is going on); and 3rd: do I feel like the doctor really cares about me - are they humanistic in their approach or bedside manner? Kaiser pinned the hip and the rest is history. In 2016 I broke my left shoulder. Dr. Robert Lucas of the East Bay Shoulder clinic did a double reverse surgery. A lab…read moretech got on the phone & asked a colleague for that doctor who can figure out all the medical reject cases "ya know, the guy who can figure out the weird stuff" and there his name was. The man who saved my life in my hands. I hesitated for several weeks before calling as I was afraid of yet again being looked at like I was a nut case. After nearly 20 physicians in various fields left me to die, this genius figured out exactly what I had. It was so rare & out there my HMO didn't believe him. UCSF & Stanford docs weren't there for me either. But we proved all of them wrong with a biopsy and such. He went up to bat against them more than once for me & many attacked him in the process. Dr. Tufft has created enough good Karma to last several hundred lives. If there was to be ever a hero in my life Dr. Tufft & a colleague he referred me to fit the bill.
