He is an exceptional listener and knows how to ask the right questions. Very comfortable and tasteful office space. He has also been highly flexible in meeting my needs during different phases of life and work. I have always left each of our sessions feeling refreshed, encouraged, and challenged (in the best way). Cannot speak highly enough of Alvis Duncan Counseling!

For fun, I like to travel, exercise, and eat good food. As a family, we enjoy taking care of our chickens and ducks on our miniature farm. I've always been interested in physical and spiritual health.  I believe that both are important components of total wellness.  Prior to counseling, I had a successful career in the health and fitness industry of New York City. Often, gym clients felt stuck, overwhelmed and overmatched in their quest for physical health.   I loved when I was able to help someone who was putting in tremendous effort but not getting the results they wanted. For the last few years I've have trained extensively in spiritual wellness working for St. Andrew's Church in Gainesville. Whether working for a gym or a church, my joy came from helping people become unstuck and find both growth an abundant life.  I bring that wellness mindset into my counseling sessions and enjoy fostering mind, body and spiritual growth with clients. I work with adults, couples, families, adolescents and college students. I also have training in treating substance abuse in adolescents and adults. I tend to counsel more from an approach than a particular theory. I use the Interpersonal Process Approach as my conceptual framework as it is highly adaptable, integrative and flexible...

Sarkis is on the more expensive side, does not accept insurance, but you get what you pay for. I saw Dr. Solomon until I moved out of state. She was very friendly, compassionate, listened to my needs and sought to meet them. She did seem to be in favor of ECT treatment and brought it up occasionally with me, but ultimately left the decision to me (which I declined). Before Sarkis, I was miserable, bouncing around between medications that either had no benefit or had horrible side effects or were completely unaffordable (I'm looking at you, Latuda, at $1300 for a month's supply). After months of frustration I came to Sarkis looking for better care and found it. My overall experience was great. Front office staff was friendly, professional, and very good with follow up communication. Dr. Solomon was compassionate and followed up with me even when I had moved away from Florida. They got me stabilized and more than just functional, but back to my old self prior to onset of bipolar disorder. I would hands down recommend Sarkis to anyone that can afford it.

When we moved to Florida in 2014 I received a recommendation to see Dr Berry at the Shands Sleep Center at the University of Florida. Dr Berry fitted me with a CPAP machine, which worked well, but only treated the apnea. Dr Berry felt I needed a psychiatrist who specialized in pharmacological treatments for complex sleep issues. He recommended a Dr Johnson at Sarkis family psychiatry. Dr Johnson did an excellent job developing a mix of meds that really helped. They were pramipexol, clonazepam, and amphetamine. He also gave specific instructions on how do ween down or gradually raise dosages when he changed dosage. I never experienced any negative side effects. He did warn that clonazepam and amphetamine could be addictive. But assured me, that as long as I adhered to my dosages there was very little chance of that happening. He also started me on a program of pre-sleep activities that also enhanced my sleep patterns. I followed his regime religiously and was very pleased with his care and the results I was experiencing. I saw Dr Johnson every two-three months for 2 and a half years, until he took a teaching position at the University of Florida. Sarkis then assigned me to a psysciatric nurse practitioner - Kathy Noffsinger. She was kind and caring and continued the regime set by Dr Johnson. However, about 8 months ago, she suggested a change of meds. I told her that everything was good and did not see a need to change. She implied the new drug could even be better and safer. So, I said okay. After a short time, I because experiencing renewed episodes from my chronic conditions. She never gave me a "weening" plan. And when an industry-wide shortage occurred in one of the meds, she did another substitution, and again without a weening period. When I insisted on going back to Dr Johnson's plan. She would only say her hands were tied because the CDC came out with new "recommendations" for using clonazepam and amphetamine together. My dosage had been 10 mg amphetamine once in the am, once at lunch and once in the afternoon. My dosage for the clonazepam was 10 mg just before bed. During all the years I was under Sarkis' care I never asked for an increase in dosage, I never went doctor or pharmacy shopping, and certainly did not look for illegal sources. I researched the CDC "recommendation" and found that doctors, under their discretion, could still prescribe both drugs at the same time. Especially if the patient was having his syndromes controlled and there was no indication of abuse. I am a 78 year old man. And have shown no signs of abuse. I think Sarkis Family psychiatry is afraid of being scrutinized for "off-label" prescriptions (which is legal). but would mean more paperwork for them. My opinion is that they rigidly adhere to the CDC recommendation to under-prescribe. Thus requiring more patient visits to their office. A line item in the Hypocratic Oath is "DO NO HARM". I question how committed is Dr Sarkis is to that oath. Finally, since they don't take insurance, there is no watchdog over the efficacy and frequence of their treatments. AVOID SARKIS AT ALL COSTS.
