At 2:31 pm an employee approached us and rudely said: "it's closed, you have to pay, now!" Directing us to the cash registers. They had already closed the shutters and we couldn't leave (kidnapping?). Finally a security guard arrived and opened the door halfway without giving us time to return the trolley inside and therefore also losing the euro used to unlock it. What a shame. At 2:39 pm the shop was empty and closed. They shouldn't have let us in or warned us that they were about to close. Obviously we will never set foot in a Masymas supermarket again.

Clean hall, wide choice of food and drinks, reasonable prices (especially considering their seafront location). You need a Masymas if you are renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel, which is very common. The store was quite busy when I visited - people were loading up on wine and jamón after the day spent on the beach. I guess they deliver to homes, there was a delivery van parked outside. You can sign up for their loyalty program in-store and get some discounts. The company maintains a lifestyle blog (only in Spanish): http://www.vidamediterranea.es Conclusion: convenient for holiday-makers and locals, reasonable prices. Also love their name ("MoreAndMore") and design of stores and vehicles :) UPDATE: just found them on twitter, they publish daily ads like this one, cool: https://twitter.com/masymas_fornes/status/761820360392204288?s=09

There are some 14 stores in Spain operated by their local partner (Overseas Imports S.L.). They also sell products from Waitrose, another British retailer. The concept is quite unique. Almost all food and drinks are imported to Spain from the UK (including bread, milk, soft drinks etc) while other foreign retailers in Spain carry a mix of mostly local Spanish food and some imported food (French Carrefour, German LIDL and Aldi). Iceland is different, it serves real fans who prefer frozen food from the UK over the fresh food grown in Spain :) I found a frozen paella (manufactured in Spain), it probably traveled from Spain to the UK and back! The store in Torrevieja opened in 2008. All staff is English and they are always polite and helpful. The store is kept in good order. There's a small cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. The location serves as a networking point for expats. There's an "Hablamos Español" announcement at entrance, looks like they want to attract more Spanish customers. I shop here from time to time and I personally recommend beers and frozen desserts. Frozen ready meals are great too if you want to stock up some food to avoid frequent visits to food stores. If you never visited Iceland - you really should, after all this is the only place in Spain where "Diet Coke" is "Diet Coke" not "Coca Cola Light" :) It was fun to find out recently: Iceland the retailer operates three supermarkets in Iceland the country (since 2012).

Ladies and gentlemen: Achtung! Attención! BATTLE OF THE GIANTS: Germany vs Spain, North vs South,…read moreBeer vs Wine, Punctuality vs Mañana! Lidl vs Mercadona! These two food retailers are head-to-head competitors. They operate thousands of stores and you can often find both of them within walking distance from any home in this area. Stores are of similar size and many items they carry are similar too. However there are many differences, some of them in today's review of Lidl. Here we go, the positives: - In store bakery. Lidl's bakery is awesome, just look at the pictures. Mercadona has bakery too, but it is much simpler. Store's German origin shows :) Like! - Organic products: coffee, yogurts, beer, wine, olive oil. Not much but Mercadona doesn't sell organic products at all. +1! - Beer. Lidl offers a wider assortment. Wheat, dark, organic, Irish, Japanese, alcohol-free, strong, generic, brands you name it! German origin shows again. Cool! - Countries' themed weeks (Italy, Japan, France, US) - typical food from around the world offered temporarily. Great addition to their permanent range, fun to try something new. Bon appétit! - Non-food items. There's an area where they sell non-food (assortment changes depending on season): beach, sports, tools, kitchen, toys, clothing, home decoration items. They bring fair quality products that work. Kudos! - Nuts without salt. A little detail that I like. Here is the only place where I found pistachios without salt added (I'm a fan of nuts / hater of salt). Great! On the downside: - They have a limited choice of fresh meat, poultry and seafood comparing to Mercadona - Smaller beauty/hygiene section (Mercadona sells make-up and hair dye for example) Personal note - a food that I absolutely can't eat: "morcilla Asturiana" - traditional smoked blood sausage from Asturia, a region in the North of Spain (Sorry, Asturians). Not Lidl's fault, I'm sure there are fans of this product. I love other types of morcillas by the way! All in all Lidl is a good grocer, I will be coming back. P.S. Although the shops are not big, "Lidl" doesn't mean "little". It's a surname of one of the former partners of the founder. The founder's surname was Schwarz, they didn't want to name the shop "The Black Market" :) Good naming decision some 80 years ago :)
