The Good Immaculately clean hotel-- our room was very clean, modern and comfortable. Hotel bar--we received a BOGO drink coupon at check in. Nice touch. Comp breakfast-- hot and cold items. Eggs, sausage, pastries, whole fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, biscuits and gravy. Something for everyone. Very nice. Coffee with flavored creamers! The (few) Negatives Price--I travel for a living and the $155/night price tag is steep for a small town hotel. For full transparency, I did book the same day. Still, this price tag is high. But clearly they can have this price and people still book. Staffing-- the same young lady who checked us in also was the bartender who served our drink in the bar. There was a bell that you could ring to get her to both locations. She had to rely on the bell as you could not see either location from the other. I felt sorry for her. Would for sure stay here again in spite of these few negatives. Was a nice experience.

You can make your own waffles at the included breakfast bar- like beer and pizza, even bad waffles are pretty good. Not that these are bad waffles- crispy and light flavors were better than expected from the industrial dispenser. If you need to stay in Madison SD this is a good spot.

We took our 3 young kids here (8,6,3) and had a great stay in the Rose Garden room. The place is immaculate. The house is a historical feature in itself and one of the individual's from Laura's books owned it. Melissa Gilbert even stayed here while in town. The owners are fabulous and welcoming of kids. The entire front wrap around porch has toys waiting for the kids- sounds tacky but it's not- still clean and lovely. But if staying in a lovely, historical house isn't enough, the breakfast is above all expectations! I had ordered the pancake man for the kids breakfast choice and had wanted to read that part of the story for the kids...couldn't find it in the books or scrambling online. Well at our beautiful little breakfast room, our host Andy brought over one of the books opened to the section about that- they read my mind!!! We sat down to fresh fruit, pink china - which my girls loved- it felt like a fancy tea! They had Ingalls trivia on the table and a CD of Pa's fiddle music playing. I had the chocolate Belgian waffle with strawberries and my husband had an omelette- both we're fantastic. Oh and choose the ham! It's wonderful. One note of caution- Hotwire and orbitz and like companies may show this hotel as full. It did for us but when we called they had rooms- even the one we wanted! So make sure you call them directly. This is soooo worth the money for a visit to DeSmet...made the whole experience extra special.

The two elevators were in working order and moved at a reasonable speed between the four floors. We had a king suite on the second floor. We entered into a kitchenette with a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee pot. We only used the fridge; the tiny freezer barely fit our cooler ice packs. The living room and bedroom are spacious, with the TV centered between them. The bathroom counter area was nice, but the toilet and bath/shower room was cramped. The tub had wall units with shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. Everything worked as it should. No issues with noise from the hallway, other rooms, or the highway. Breakfast was included with the room. Sunday morning, it was served from 6-10am and offered standard continental breakfast fare. There was a lot of seating. Our checkout soon after was quick. I would be fine with staying here if we came through Brookings in the future.

The room met my expectations of the Hampton Inn brand. It was clean. It had the usual features with two queen beds, a work desk, coffee service and wifi. While I did not hear any noise from the neighboring rooms, the hallway is a different matter. You will absolutely hear everyone walking past in the hallway and they will slam their doors. The noise seemed to stop promptly at 9:30am and resumed at 5:45 am. The property is next to the highway and at 6:00am, the engine brakes outside started making noise. Not a great night's sleep. The breakfast was the usual Hampton standards and the coffee was good. If the property has a guest laundry, I wasn't able to find it. I would likely select another property if I was planning to return to Brookings. [Review 17853 overall - 59 in South Dakota - 1374 of 2022.]

I was glad to discover the Rose Stone Inn, a charming B&B in the heart of historic Dell Rapids. Built in 1909 to accommodate traveling salesmen, it might well have been a stopover for my grandfather, who moved his family there from Knoxville, IA. (The town does boast at least two funeral homes, right there on the main street, and he was a wholesale casket salesman, so...). It's not cheap, but it had the great advantage of being right in the middle of where I wanted to be, and as I was soon to discover, the delicious breakfasts I was given each morning were substantial enough to eliminate the need for seeking out lunch! I stayed in the Violet Room (aka "Violet's room"), which was perfectly sized for a single traveler and had a small, but well-appointed en suite bathroom. The decor was period correct and aided my mental time travel. Sharon, the host, was always friendly and welcoming, without being the least bit obtrusive (for those travelers who might avoid a B&B out of fear of too much familial feeling!). I also met the House Dog, Maggie, who invited me to give her a belly rub upon our first acquaintance, and I happily obliged.
