Since I don't really have a solid grasp on where things are located, I just know that it took about 30 minutes to get there by train. It's located kind of near the airport based on the stops. Once we got there, it was smooth sailing! The footprint of the building is rather large. You'll know that you're at the right place by the three-dimensional looking colorful squares on the right side of the building. As you enter, there is a cafeteria to the left. We visited, and expectedly, there was a decent variety of stuff that was very expensive. It was a weekend so they had a brunch type service that was about $20 a person and well it looked good, we weren't overly excited about paying that for each of us. The all a cart menu was fine and we spent something like €30 on some sandwiches, fruit, hotdogs and pops. To the right, is a gift shop and an area to put coats and bags. Just passed that was the true entrance. Tickets were €22 per person for the day or €45 for a yearly pass. Definitely the sort of thing that is worth getting a year-long pass if you're into it. There's a wide array of things to do, the majority of them hands-on. The kids were able to build matchbox cars, small flying crafts, and complete circuit boards. There was a lovely dinosaur exhibit, an area that focused more on urban safety including driving and interactive maps, as well as some very large exhibits that concentrated on physics concepts. A big highlight for everyone was the rat exhibit, which included an athletic display during which the rats played basketball. This occurs at 11:30 and 3 PM, and was wildly popular! We found this was a perfect place to spend a solid afternoon. We got in around 11, played for an hour, had lunch and then continued to play until about 4 PM. There was a lot to keep the kids busy, and much of it was interesting enough to keep the adults engaged as well. If you live here, or are visiting with kids, this is well worth your time to check out!

My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that their audio tour (which is free) is a little uneven; some rooms have nothing or only play music, some rooms have way too many things to scan with narrations that go on for far too long. This place is really cool, though, and if you like history/natural history/artifacts/etc. it's definitely worth a visit.

But the issue is that the lockers are located in the open floor lobby and it's easy to see the large keypad password if you're seated nearby. My biggest advice is they should move the lockers to an enclosed section and switch to (like most of the other lockers we ran into) keyed lockers for security. In relation to the exhibitions - most of the lobby floor was a waste. If you're a fan of Moomin one corner area is cute, but the rest is just a basic furniture showroom, there's nothing unique or engaging about it. All in all, Designmuseo is nowhere near worth the $26 usd purchase price and I felt extremely uncomfortable leaving my bag here so overall I can't recommend it.

Our primary purpose was the kids area as we had three kiddos that desperately needed some play and imagination time after walking the city for some time. They've got a whole section for the kiddos with lots of stuff to jump around and climb on, an old kitchen where play food lives and a small stage where they can put on puppet shows. There's another area where they house classic toys - sort of a tease to have them displayed but not let the kids play with them, but they're fun to look at! Entry was free and there appeared to be plenty of other stuff to check out throughout the place. Stroller parking is outside but easily seen from the kids area and there's a coffee shop right off the main entryway. There's really no reason to not be checking this place out, especially if the kiddos are in tow!

I enjoyed quite a lot of the art here, paintings and some sculptures. The more "modern" stuff is the art that I really enjoy. What a cool art museum! HAM, or Helsinki Art Museum is a modern/contemporary art museum located in…read morea big shopping mall. HAM contributes a great cultural gem for the city here, with thought-provoking and interesting works of art. They had a big exhibition on Parisian art from around the time that Picasso was painting there, showing a lot of where he got his influences. They also had a seemingly permanent exhibition of photographs of a Finnish rock quarry that has interesting sounding geological features. When we went, the top floor of the museum was off-limits due to their ongoing installation of a new exhibit. So I felt like we missed a good deal of the museum's space. The museum is easy to get around, and the artworks are titled and described in English as well as Finnish. Outside the museum, there's a cool gift shop, with reasonably priced prints, cards, and some art supplies. They even have a clearance section with cool artsy books in Finnish! The museum also contributes large scale works of art to the mall that it's located in- so check out the chandelier made from pots and pans and the other big sculptures! I was really glad to find this museum. It's got some cool stuff! The best part, was we happened to show up on half-priced day- Score!
