If I could, I would rate this trash bin a zero. I took a course for a total of over $10,000 and I literally taught myself. Administration is a wreck. They can't hire good teachers or seem to keep any either. No one is help accountable. We are told lie and after. Promises for better instruction, learning more, etc. None of it happened. The facility itself is a disgrace. It's filthy. The bathrooms are often in disrepair. There is basically no sanitation. This was one of the worst life experiences I have ever had. read more

Terrible customer service on a Saturday. I was getting a blow out and hair straighten. I have afro hair the tech was new and not experience which is ok. The instructor was Spanish rude, and I left after the job wasn't completed and spent hours there on a Saturday. Better customer service is a must for the instructor. read more

I am a student here. I'm not sure who the higher up management is that runs this school but most of the staff are BEYOND unorganized, unprofessional, rude etc. The tuition is extremely expensive for a campus that is trashy & a staff turnover that is so quick. They hire instructors that are not meant to be teachers. The front office can't even schedule my clients properly. I'm not trying to be entitled or rude in any way, but if you went here for thousands and thousands of dollars, you'd feel the same way. If i could give Sunstate Academy negative stars I would.. Please save yourself the agony and hard earned money. I will not be going back EVER!! Gel nails and manicure poor, haircuts par if that, perms---Do not even think about it. Asked for a spiral perm got a jerry curl perm. They used too small a rod, different sized rods on each side of my head and got hair was fried from being left in perm solution for too long. No refund is being offered. On the bright side....Not really, they offered me a haircut to remove the damage. So..... now I get to lose 4+ inches from medium length hair. WOW!!! totally disgusted and a disgrace of a school. Just a note.... the student is told what rod size and how long to leave the solution in for, so it is not her fault as she was the sweetest young lady ever and just following the School director's orders. signed..... #Ruined hair sad outlook for job interviews ruined my planned event weekend. I cannot say anything about the school itself but stay away from getting any services done. I scheduled 2 appointments for my boys to get their hair done. 2 days before their appointment they called and said it had to be canceled due to the shop needed to be "cleaned". I then had to ask if we could reschedule.... should have ran then. The day of the appointment we walked in and approached the desk and were looked down upon by the sasquatch behind the desk like we didn't belong in the place. Maybe because I'm a guy with 2 sons in a female establishment. She then tells me they are NOT going to do my Boys , not CANT, due to they dont do perms to teens. I then go male Karen and ask for a manager and she says in some sasquatch tone to have a seat. We wait 15 mins. The manager comes out and I can't already tell by her demeanor how this was going to go. She looked like see just finished off a ragger at her son's dorm party the night before and was regretting life today. She had the same crappy attitude as her Sasquatch front desk help and told me they are not doing the service because they don't put chemicals in kids hair. I don't know much about this stuff so I later learned why some places don't. I found a much better salon later that knew what they are talking about and did a great job. read more

This place is so terrible. There was no structure or teaching. The teachers quit after a few months anyways. There was so much drama and bullying and negative energy I was getting terrible anxiety and panic attacks I couldn't even focus on teaching myself!! ..... so I would go to the dean to report these issues because that's what the handbook told us to do. The dean ultimately couldn't control other students and didn't have time to deal with my problems. He got so annoyed with me always reporting incidents that he yelled at me and told me I had to quit the school so I did. (Best decision ever!!!!) I now go to school in Bonita springs and it's SOO AMAZING THERE!!!! We learn so much! The school in fort Myers will teach you basic facials and maybe waxing but that's literally all and your teacher will be brand new, but in Bonita we learn a lot!!!!! We learn many machines like derma planing, and epilfree (laser hair removal) We learn last lifting and tinting, lash extensions, waxing, they actually show you how to do everything and we actually always have clients to work on!!! We get a lot of practice and it's a way better learning environment! read more

As a former student, let me start by saying that I believe that there are some teachers at this school that legitimately care and are doing the best they can with what they have. But that's about where the positives stop. I attended Sunstate for half of a cosmetology program and left to start over at another school in another state. It was highly discouraged, but I have to tell you: even having to take the loans out all over again and go further into debt, even having to start completely from scratch and throw away all 600 hours I'd already done, even having to owe the school money for dropping out? Still better than having to stay in this absolutely subpar institution. My first week in the new school was more productive than the 600 hours I spent trying to make it work with Sunstate. When I first toured the school, I noticed a lot of students were frowning and looked really angry and uncomfortable. I should've paid more attention to that, but this school was the closest to my home and had the most convenient scheduling options for me, so I tried to make it work. I wish I hadn't. The equipment is all old, outdated, largely broken. The facilities are dusty and kind of grimy. The administration could not care less about the students. Some of the teachers are caring individuals who are probably way more skilled than they can rightly demonstrate in this school, but many of them simply don't care, are too busy goofing around or just straight up disappearing or not showing up in the first place to actually teach you anything. It's highly unprofessional, and there were several instances of classes I and my classmates were meant to have that honestly just didn't happen. Rather than being in class, the teacher never showed up and we were told that we could just make those classes up on our off days as if we didn't have jobs and other obligations. The curriculum is questionable. You're taught to do things a certain way for the first three months, but the teachers will tell you while you're learning them that these methods aren't actually the right way to do things and you're going to have to totally relearn them once you're actually taking clients. When you ask them why, none of them can explain why they're wasting your time teaching you the wrong methods, but none of them will take the pains to teach you the correct way until you're on the floor making an ass of yourself, and that's only if you can find a teacher on the floor to check your work. The tools you're given (that you've paid for with your tuition) are garbage and break within the first week or two, and any complaints you take to the administration will not be taken seriously. In some cases, I and many other students were straight-up lied to about what we would be learning. Once we had paid and signed up, suddenly the things we were told we would get from this "education" completely changed and looked a lot less promising than we'd been led to expect. To be clear: the cosmetology program does not include makeup. Telling you this now so you don't fall for it when you're told it will. Please don't waste your time and money going to this school. Even if it's the most geographically convenient option, you will never leave this place prepared for a career. Do yourselves a favor, and just go elsewhere. read more

As a former student of Sunstate Academy I was not happy there. The teachers were not that helpful. there's to many students and to little staff. the way they teach "proper disinfection" is incorrect, and unsanitary. Before I had left they told me they were going to start a tutoring program for those of us who were struggling with learning color and styles and wanted to build confidence, and hasn't started that program and I have been gone since November. I am very disappointed in this school. and even more disappointed in the staff who has failed to teach the future cosmetologists the RIGHT ways to disinfect their implements and to refuse helping the ones who need to build confidence behind the chair. read more

Currently a student at Sunstate I highly would not recommend! Most of the teachers honestly don't care, no teachers ever last whenever we have test to do or any work shops available for us to try to learn more they take it away from our class claiming our class is to big and we have to stay working on clients we came to this school to learn but most of the time they care about mainly clients not about our education! We spend $18,000 for us to learn and take our test to get our license but they won't even do their job and print out our progress reports to see what test we have to make up but keep pushing it further and further! The equipment that come in the cosmetology kits are absolute trash. They care more about getting students into door constantly lying for about two weeks and then change the entire program when we aren't able to drop out after two weeks if my entire class can without having to still pay for the education we would've done left! read more

I have gone to school here for several months, I am speaking from experience. This school has several phenomenal teachers, several god awful teacher, poorly designed programs, and the school director could care less when these things are brought to her attention. 1.After I started a program, they no longer allowed us to provide our own models to work on, even though we were promised this at the beginning of the course. 2.In the middle of the course they changed the syllabus, and its program requirements! 3. They can not keep their teachers, all the teachers seem to quit. 4. The administration could much less care, when grievances are brought up. 5. They have an awful massage program and a really nasty, rude and abrasive teacher to top it off. Because they cant keep the good teachers, there is always "miscommunications" between new and old teachers. You never know what to expect coming into massage class, there is always a new rule "made up" to better convenience the teacher! 6. The nail program has not had an instructor reliably show up for a couple of weeks. This not what nail students pay for. 7. They regularly have teachers attend either a commercial taping/ competition or some other sort of contest.... watch out because you may come to class you may not even have a teacher that day 8. They do not provide adequate supplies to complete your classwork/ clinics/ practice Don't go to school here, once you commit, they do not follow thru with their end of the bargain, they lack transparency, accountability and they really don't care about ANY grievance you may have. It is clear that the majority of the teachers/ administration here do not care about doing their job correctly, just a paycheck, they no passion for what they do or how it affects the lives of others/ students read more

This was my first and last experience with this academy. I made an appointment at 6pm and was told at 6:20 that she was setting up and would be back in a few minutes. At 6:40 she came back and advised there was another student going to give me a mani-pedi. So with an opened mind I sat down in the chair for a pedicure. The student was very nice and needed a pedicure to graduate come to find out that all students even hair techs have to do a mani-pedi to graduate. Needless to say he was not going to be a nail tech. It took him over 2 hours to do my pedicure!! I was then suppose to get a gel manicure and because it was after 9 I just said put regular polish on my mistake, another student did my manicure in about 10 minutes and I had polish on my cuticles on my skin around my nails and then was rushed out the door so they could close. Chalk it up to trying to get something less expensive. I now have to go to my regular salon to get a real mani-pedi. Think twice before going here. read more

Oh wow don't even submit your phone number to this school to request info unless you want endlessly harassed! Even after telling them I'm no longer interested and not to contact me anymore they texted me ONE MINUTE afterwards asking if I think I'd be interested later on. It was almost comical the lengths these people will go to recruit new students I'm thinking they must be desperate. I initially scheduled a tour of the school, which they texted me three times to remind me (In a two day period) so I called two hours prior to my tour to reschedule and the woman actually asked me if I'd ride a bus there from my house (Cape Coral), then when I tried to say I couldn't the woman talked over me again and said or do you have a friend who can bring you? When does your husband get off work? 5? Oh I have an opening at 4 and 6! (All in the same sentence with me not even replying) so unfortunately this is NOT the school for me I can't imagine what the school is like if they're this ruthless and tactless with their recruiting. This may the sorriest excuse for an academic institution I have ever come across. I myself went through the Spa Therapies program here and encountered constant disorganization and frustration. First of all, the teachers there are not at all trained to teach. They treat the students like little children and seem to be unable to communicate efficiently or AT ALL with each other. There were set rules for students that I saw change daily. Certain students were allowed to waltz in to class 20 minutes late, while others would just be met with a locked door and sent home. Certain teachers had no problem literally letting students snore away on their desks while others were hard at work. The rumor-mill between teachers was unprofessional and completely embarrassing. They never seemed to be able to hold on to any instructors either.... we went through 5 just in the 9 months I was there. Tests got lost, and testing dates moved constantly which was extremely stressful. To top it all off, they seem to have a major kink in communication with the Board of Health that they haven't done anything about so be prepared to wait a while to receive your license.
