I saw this piece of art across the street from the place we were staying. It is the sunshine checkerboard. It was a checkerboard that had a son in the middle of it. read more

Such a flashback of some fun days my husband and I shared back in the 1980's. The Nintendo Entertainment System was our first gaming system! This place is right off the 110 freeway and right past the train tracks on a corner. You can miss it if you have never been. But who can miss these giant controllers. Only down side is the location. Parking is kind of tough in this area I was lucky enough to find some close by. The installation is a cool sight to see if your into gaming or just for nostalgia sake. Not much to do but to soak it in and take pictures if you like. There is also a Rubik's cube and a Tetris replica which is all graffitied out. Ever in the neighborhood or want to take a drive check it out. It's one of those hidden gems in LA which is free. 1up!

One of the two tunnels that go under Wilshire (the one closer to Park View Street) connecting the…read moretwo halves of MacArthur Park, is covered in 10 graffiti-style murals promoting education, music, Christianity, clean and sober living, and achieving dreams. Some of the murals are a bit horrific, showing a woman seemingly poisoning her child with drugs and skeletal people chained by poverty. The murals are all vibrant, and most of the people who go through the tunnel tend to ignore the art. When Brandon D. and I walked through and started taking pictures, it was then that others stopped to look. A couple of men remarked that they never really paid attention to the art on the walls before. Since this is a tunnel, the murals can be hard to see, even during the day when bright light floods the passage. The paint that was used is somewhat shiny, so it further makes it difficult to see from certain angles. However, looking down the tunnel from the lake side before sunset is glorious as all the colors pop from that angle. Graffiti art has this stigma attached, and really it's a vivid and versatile form. Glad to see someone's putting it toward positive messages.

The stalls were Filipinos who are small businesses selling their goods: Christmas ornaments, jewelry, clothing, small toys, etc. There was a DJ playing some rocking music. It shows an astronaut in it but no Filipinos has ever been in space. There's also what look like a train but not sure what it symbolizes. I'd rather see a mural depicting a small barrio with a nipa hut, a farmer with his carabao, kids playing in the street, or people celebrating a town fiesta.

It's that time of the year again to witness the annual Burbank parade along Olive Avenue. I have…read moreattended this event many times in the past but will never get tired of it. Each year there's a parade theme so this year, it was decided to be "Aloha Burbank". So I joined the big throng of people to enjoy the festivities as I comfortably sat by the sidewalk to get a better view of the parade. I watched several marching bands from different schools, cities, and organizations. There were also lots of horses representing the equestrian part of the city. Different mascots were there to cheer the young ones as well as the young once. Our respectable members of the armed forces and police department were fully represented as they paraded the fire trucks, military jeeps, ambulances, etc. In attendance were trainees, officers and veterans who were respectfully applauded and cheered on by the spectators. Different city departments were also represented by different floats. Same goes with the various local businesses in the city of Burbank. Each one brought their A game in decorating and entertaining the crowd. They even distributed souvenirs and discount coupons. The festivities continued in the grounds of George Izay Park where numerous vendors and food trucks were lined up. The public were also treated with a free show of dancing dragons and Hawaiian girls doing the hula. It was a indeed a fun-filled day!
