There are so many stores to shop at in this area BUT none of them gave us the friendly customer service that we received at Sunset Traders! We received such a warm welcome from Terri & Carl that we immediately felt like we knew what the Aloha Spirit was about! It was a great way to start our vacation. You truly have so many choices of where to shop when you come to the Big Island but after walking into Sunset Traders you won't need or want to shop anywhere else! They helped us find everything we needed without ever making us feel pressured to shop. They gave us our space but were close enough when we had questions. This store has everything! I wish I had taken more photos but I was just so excited bc who wants to waste time shopping at a bunch of different stores on vacation when they can find it all in one place? The variety ranged from the cute Christmas ornaments with Santa & turtles all the way to handmade, beautiful one of a kind jewelry. Sunset Traders has items for every budget too! Stop in & grab a few postcards or buy a quality shirt that won't fall apart after a few washes. I also think it's a great idea to support local small business owners! Chain stores are great but will you find unique, one of a kind jewelry? Nope! We left with exactly what we needed, smiles on our faces & great advice on local beaches / restaurants that we should try out from Terri & Carl! We not only enjoyed shopping in this great store but the view out the front door was beautiful! It is also conveniently located next door to shaved ice! I'm a big gift shopper and I always find something at Sunset Traders. They added a whole selection of beautiful made in Hawaii jewelry, like shell and gemstone jewelry by BeachGoddessShells and Manta Ray jewelry by designer Ted Daley, so cool! I get my dad Kona shirts and Hawaii shirts there and they have beautiful stickers. Check it out when you are in Kona there is a free parking lot right behind it. The ladies are so nice and they always help me find my sizes and paw through all of the cute jewelry. read more

Walked past this gift shop and was drawn to a couple of tee-shirts posted at the entry way near the sidewalk. Trust me there were dozens and dozens to choose from. I really liked one style in particular; one had a depiction of a group of geckos and the other a group of turtles which were sitting at a bar, with one in their group that had fallen out onto the floor from drinking too much. I was torn as to which one to buy, as my souvenir shirt from our vacation on the Big Island last month. Fast forward to our last day and I returned, as I had not found a souvenir shirt I wanted to commemorate our wonderful time on the island. I debated and ended up purchasing the shirt with the geckos, as we had a few of them invade our suite during our stay. I checked the stack for my 2XL, but could not find it. The proprietor (sales clerk) was asked if that was all the shirts in that style and he told me it was. He still came over, looked at the shirt, and then maneuvered over to a nearby spot on the wall and started digging through a pile of shirts. He located my shirt after all! Yea, I scooped it up and we proceeded to look around some more. The gentleman appeared grumpy, probably from having to wear that damn mask for hours on end - which I can't blame him. My adult son found two shirts he wanted to buy and we headed to the counter and paid for our shirts. Needless to say I was excited to wear it for the first time the following weekend and show this humorous shirt off to some buddies I went fishing with. It was a warm day and I sweated, not profusely I might add, while we unloaded all the gear for our three night stay. I cooled off shortly thereafter and while chilling with a beer one of my buddies asked what happened to my tee-shirt. Huh, say what? I looked down and observed that the sweat from my chest and neckline had faded out areas on my now ruined (now yard work worthy) shirt (see photos). How disappointing after ONE use. Upon further inspection I learned it was manufactured out of country - enough said! I'm not going to blame this retailer 100%, but they do get 50% of the blame for buying bundles of cheap foreign made shirts failing quality control when it comes to the dye used. I'm not saying don't buy anything from here, but be discerning. So yes, "I've experienced better"; especially for $28. Also, my son has not reported to me his two shirts turned to crap. read more

Cute shop along Ali'i for touristy souvenirs, T-shirts, etc. It's in the middle of where tourists hang out. Prices are going to be more than what you would pay at other places. But, they have really cute stuff here. I had to buy my souvenir Kona t-shirt here. I can't remember how much I paid for it. I think it was less than $20. That's actually a pretty good price. I was out to breakfast with some friends and afterwards, decided to browse in some shops. Along Ali'i drive, we came across this cute t-shirt store and decided to stop in. (now, to be honest, I have lived here for over 9 years and for some reason, never stopped in here - that's going to change!) So, we all went in. We were greeted by the sales person (Fran) and felt instantly welcomed! While we looked around at the shirts - really fun ones! - we found quite a few things to buy - some shirts and a hat. The place is right next to the King's Palace on what appears to be an end of the main shopping street in Kona. The owner is a very nice person ready to give you a discount if you purchase some items together. I have set there sails to purchase a Hawaiian shirt. They have a very nice selection. Both original "Made in Hawaii" as well as some cheaper impostors, claimed to have been designed in Hawaii, but which are actually Chinese or Vietnamese imports. Since only a couple of meters north there will be soon start of Iron Man competition on the Big Island, they also sell some appropriately branded merchandise. All in all it is a nice spot if you are looking for some souvenirs from the island. read more

My family and I spent Christmas of 2016 in Kailua Kona and had a memorable time since this was the first time in ages that the whole family was able to be together. My grandson was allowed one gift from Kona and he chose a hoodie from Sunset Traders. He loved that hoodie as it represented a fabulous vacation for him. Seven months later, someone with light fingers stole it off of our porch. I contacted Ed at Sunset Traders and he helped us secure another hoodie that I could purchase for my grandson and he mailed it to us. I cannot thank him enough! Went into this store and was un-impressed. Their T-shirt prices are 2x what everyone else has and when I asked the manager "Mike" if I could get a discount, he immediately went on a rambling explanation about quality and generosity. Holy cow. I went down the block and got 3 T-shirts - good quality - for the price of ONE of theirs. Also, their jewelry is WAAAYY over priced. You can go about 100 yards - to a REAL jewelry store - and get better jewelry for half of what they sell for. Anyone who buys merchandise here is lazy. Maybe that's what they are counting on....... Sunset Traders is my favorite store in Hawaii. Open air, on the beach, shop with a view. Best T-shirt choices and I have been all over the big Island. My whole family found their favorite choices of shirts, shorts and even flip flops and jewelry here. Walk across the street and saw turtles in clear blue water! Have a shaves ice next door done! Living the aloha life! We will be back to enjoy talking to store owner Ed Brunner who has tales and pictures of tsunami hitting his store. Don't miss this stop for a local feel. read more

This was the most unfriendly store I went to on the island. I asked to look at earrings and then said no thank you, and she cursed me and chanted that she hoped I broke my neck that day and to leave her store. Everything was way over priced. This store is awesome!! I had purchased a bracelet here, a good bracelet!! Then dumb me left without it. When I went to look for it, it was gone!! I was so mad at myself and told myself I had just wasted a bunch of money. I thought I had dropped it. Well... The owner of the store, Ed, went WAY out of his way & tracked me down!!!
