While the horses were being prepared for our ride, I heard one scream. The men nearby looked nervously in my direction. I couldn't see what happened, but the sound and their reaction were very unsettling. A woman came out of the barn and turned out to be our trail guide. The man who first attended to us was kind and friendly, but he explained that she would be leading the ride. Unfortunately, she was not welcoming at all. She seemed upset, impatient, and aggressive from the start. I felt intimidated approaching her, and she made my friend nervous as well. When she told us to line up by the fence, her instructions were unclear, which caused confusion. My friend ended up going the wrong way, and I had to go find her. When we finally lined up, the guide was visibly annoyed. The whole interaction felt tense. During the ride, she smoked the entire time while on the horse, which I have never experienced before on any trail ride. She barely spoke to us, and there was no effort to provide any kind of tour, history, or friendly conversation--something I've come to expect from these experiences. Instead, she would occasionally yell things like "Isn't this relaxing?" or "Aren't you having fun?" while continuing to shout at us if we were too slow. She repeatedly told me to kick my horse to make him go faster. I've ridden before, and it was clear this horse was very tired and possibly overworked. When I expressed that I felt bad, she became visibly angry, stopped, and insisted I kick him anyway, comparing the horse to a car needing gas. I felt pressured and uncomfortable, but the horse was too exhausted to respond regardless. I chose to let the horse move at his own pace. We paid $50 each for this ride, and if the horse is tired, I'm not going to force it. The ride itself lasted less than an hour, so there was no reason for the level of frustration she displayed. Overall, the experience left me feeling uneasy, tense, and stressed rather than relaxed. There was something very off about the entire situation. I would not return. read more

Absolutely Horrible Experience - Please Read Before Visiting I visited this place a couple of days ago to inquire about horseback riding options for my son, who has a disability. I wanted to see if he would feel comfortable around the horses and get a general sense of the environment. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a peaceful visit turned into an incredibly traumatic experience. As we were walking around the property, a dog from the facility suddenly came out and viciously attacked our tiny, 4-pound, 12-year-old dog. I had to physically pull my dog away while she was bleeding heavily, and to make matters worse, no staff were around to help us. I was terrified and overwhelmed, trying to keep my son safe by telling him to get in the car while I tried to distract the attacking dog. The dog even attempted to go after me, and I had to use my dog's leash to fend it off. Once the dog ran off, I came out of the car in desperation, hoping to find someone, anyone, who could assist. A woman finally approached me, but instead of helping, she was rude and dismissive. She told me dogs aren't allowed on the property (which was never made clear before) and coldly said she wouldn't be paying for any vet bills. I tried explaining that we were simply there to get information and had no idea something like this could happen, but she had no empathy or concern. I later spoke to a man who said he worked there. I showed him my dog, who was still bleeding badly, and he shrugged it off, saying she'd be fine and wouldn't need anything. I was completely shocked by the lack of care and professionalism. I rushed my dog to the emergency vet, where she needed over 10 stitches and a drain to manage the bleeding. The entire experience was horrifying, not just because of the attack, but because of how the staff handled the situation. No apology, no assistance, no compassion. I'm still shaken by what happened and heartbroken over how poorly we were treated. I went there seeking a safe place for my son, and left traumatized, with a severely injured pet and absolutely no support from the people in charge. I strongly do not recommend this place. They are unprofessional, irresponsible, and completely unprepared to handle emergencies. It's incredibly disheartening to know that this is how they treat potential customers. I had been to Sunset Stables a handful of times before COVID and always had a great experience, but unfortunately, I've gone twice this year and the staff were rude, abrupt and impatient both times. We got the authentic Rhode Island "hospitality" of simultaneously being barked at and called "sweetie." Today I was not informed that I couldn't wear a small backpack on the horse until it was time to mount. Then I was not permitted to put it in my car and had to leave it in the open (no doors), unlocked, unstaffed "office" because the trail guide, Chrissy, basically said I had to get on the horse at that exact second, despite there being several other people waiting to get on horses. The parking area is VERY close to the office. It wouldn't have created any kind of delay so it seemed weird as to why I couldn't just put the bag in the car. Especially since they hadn't communicated that I couldn't take it prior to that. So we get on the horses and my friend is getting a tutorial on how to handle her horse. The horse started eating grass and instead of offering some guidance, the guy who works there was like "I TOLD YOU TO PULL THE REIGNS LIKE THIS!" He spoke to her as if he was reprimanding a child. Needless to say due to the terrible treatment we received, the ride wasn't as good as it could have been because we were feeling anxious by the time the trail started. The ride itself was nice and Chrissy did a great job during the actual ride, BUT I don't think I'll be returning. Plus, it's cash only and you are required to wear a helmet. No thanks! read more

LOVED it! I called ahead to go trail riding with a friend of mine. They only charged us $20 for an "hour" more like an hour and 45 :) The staff was wonderful, our guide was an older gentleman and it was my friend and I plus another woman who had been taking lessons there. Since I called ahead they put her with us because I am an advanced rider, and my friend has also been riding for quite sometime! They gave me a wonderful horse named murphy, because I let them know I could handle whatever... He was GREAT I wanted to take him home with me! My friend( who is about 5'2) rode a wild lil pony We rode western, and since we were all pretty experienced riders we walked, trotted, and cantered. So if you can ride, call ahead and let em know! I'd been here once before and had a positive experience, but today was very strange. Firstly, our guide Chrissy got better throughout the day and on the trail I trusted her advice and felt safe on the trail with her. However, Upon greeting us she seemed a bit frazzled and irked to be at the desk. She repeatedly told me I couldn't wear my fanny pack and when I was walking to give it to me parents she shouted at me. I responded calmly that I was handing it to my parents to which she apologized. I appreciated that she also gave my dad a tip for the best place to take pictures of us. I chalked up her stress to the strange times and the requirements of social distancing and wearing a mask. When we were launched on to the horse, a woman was smoking a cigarette and yelling at us to get on and out on our helmets. The whole time was very abrasive and made me very anxious. Not ideal for being on a horse as a beginner! Then, we were provided very brief instruction on how to maneuver the horses. The same woman yelled at the woman in front of me to move her legs properly so she could adjust the foot stools on the paddle. Her whole mood and tone was irked and hostile. My date did not know how to ride the horse and his started going forward. The staff began yelling at him to stop the horse and the woman with the cigarette was shouting very loudly. I felt bad for the older gentleman helping me who was getting ordered around. Then, a young man was ordered to "TEACH THESE TWO HOW TO RIDE AGAIN!!!!!" I was ready to call off the ride and ask for a refund at that moment. But then a kind faced younger man came over and calmly explained how to maneuver the horses. He even asked me if I had any questions and launched me off the trail. He was the only reason we stayed on the ride at that point. Once we were on the trail (I was on Diamond and my date was on AJ), Chrissy was in her element. She shouted instructions from the front and while it wasn't ideal for hearing clearly, her tips made a huge difference in my ride. The trail itself was short, But beautiful. Diamond was a bit mischievous but I managed to keep her on track. The staff does encourage riders to give the horses "a whack" with the stick. It seemed to work fine for me and I never had to hit my horse hard. The ride was an adventure for sure, but I won't be coming back and do not recommend for children. read more

We had a great time! The wooded trail was beautiful - and the horses were easy going. It was a beginners trail ride, just what we needed. We called ahead to make a reservation. We arrived early - and sure I could have took personally that the welcome was not sweet - but I am an adult and saw the staff were busy doing chores and caring for many horses and other animals. There were friendly staff and also more to the point staff, which I took in stride as no one meant anyone harm and I don't prefer chit chat anyway. I actually don't agree with the negative comments others posted. My companion got along very well with the trail guide, they laughed and talked, and sure - I heard some stern commands - even got one myself - but again, that's to keep all safe and everyone has a different personality. The horses seemed to be well cared for to me and a priority - it hard work to operate a facility like that, and customers can be demanding and not follow instructions. If you are polite, friendly, and listen, take things in stride and keep good humor about you - you will enjoy a magnificent experience. We paid $50 per person for an hour. We commented the entire ride home about how amazing it was to take the trip today to this stable and how we would go again. read more

Just a few things..the horses are beautiful and well trained ..BUT..few things i didn't like and I've gone twice..same thing both times..when you get there no one acknowledges you ..you have to walk and around and initiate your arrival..the owner is extremely rude ..both times i caught her yelling at people ..including myself ...this trail is for beginners but their patience and expectations is non-existent..it's kind of embarrassing because you could be trying your best and having fun and she will just belittle you in front of everyone ..also, don't like how they make you come off the horse at end you have come off as if you were on a bike but much higher up..once i got off she patted Diamond and said ok ok there it's all over now as if i was such an i convenience 50 isn't cheap ..so maybe they can relax a bit..otherwise it would be an enjoyable experience ..I don't know if i would go again honestly read more

First, it should be said, we do not leave reviews for anything, ever. Our time at sunset stables was so phenomenal I have to share. We are a family of six with four children ages 9-13 who had never ridden before. Our 13 year old has Autism. I am completely blown away by the care, consideration, and accommodation shown by the family who runs these stables. We felt safe and confident after thorough individual instruction and had an absolutely amazing trail ride with Steven (who was super informative and helpful, and was sure to check on us, my 13 year old especially, frequently throughout the ride). We even saw a baby deer and his mom up close, breathtaking! I can't say enough and I can't thank them enough. If you love someone with special needs, you understand. Amazing place, we highly recommend it, especially for families with children!!! read more

The only positive thing I can say is that the land was beautiful.... Unfortunately the customer/client service was awful. We had to wait 45 minutes for our trail ride to begin, which wouldn't have been a problem if we didn't have to watch the owner scream at her campers. She was trying to show them how to wash a horse and was grabbing the campers and pulling them towards the hose. As an early educator and parent I found this completely unacceptable. Next, we went in to sign our paperwork where she continued to yell at the campers, her staff, a community helper and us. At this point we should have walked out but a previous customer was saying how wonderful his past experience was and we didn't want to disappoint my daughter or the girl my friend mentors. As we began getting onto our horses you could see the staff being talked down too. The girl who gave the trail ride shared her concern of one of the horses being tired and was harshly spoken to again by the owner for sharing her concern. The staff nicely let me know that my horse gets a tad feisty so I needed to control the reins. She then gave me a twig instead of a crop. (Which snapped on the trail ride) As we began our walk another horse stopped to eat and our trail guide began the yelling and continued to yell the entire trail ride. She repeatedly yelled at my daughter who was at the end to kick the horse and hit it harder. My daughter who is 8, has two years of riding experience and was very uncomfortable with the guides instructions and constant yelling. At the end my daughter ended up in tears and didn't want to continue. My thoughts are that the business has too much on their plates. Maybe smaller groups would be more manageable for them with some schedule. I felt bad for the young campers as well as for the people in our group who I am sure had the beauty of the trip taken away by the negativity of the staff. read more

What a RIP off! I called prior driving 45 minutes and inquired about pony rides. The manager said yes its a few minutes for $5. She LIED. I timed it at 52 SECONDS. Thats right, $5 for UNDER a minute. I was willing to spend $20 on pony rides this afternoon and I walked away after LESS THAN A MINUTE. When I brought my dissatisfaction to the manager, she had an attitude, was rude and couldn't care less. "Thats what it is. One time around. It is a few minutes the entire experience, them petting the horse, them getting on the horse and them going once around. Its two peoples time for pony rides". I dont care how they justify ripping someone off. This was the worst pony ride experience I ever had. Not to mention the 2 girls who took my kid were not. friendly. Do not come here. We went last week end. The whole time during the ride the older women screammed kick them kick them harder i assure you this is not the best method to let a horse know what you want them to do. It ruined the ride and made everyone in the party of 14 people including children very nervous and uncomfortable this place should be looked at by a goverment agency for abuse of animals. And i think it was a waste of 70 bucks for my self and my wife to ride i am a very experienced rider. My wife is not. So needless to say she wouldnt have noticed the difference how ever i grew up iwning my own horse. Until i was 23 these horse are what is known in the equine world as scags. How ever set that aside. The custermer service was for certain less than a mcdonalds counter worker. Spend a bit xtra and find another stable for a pleasure ride. This was a rushed experience and the horse do not listen with no fault to the animal. They all seem to be mis treated. I was on A J and was tild he was a tough horse. Well under an exserinced hand he AJ was a winderful horse who i feel gets mistreated . Had a fun trail ride here! The pricing was about average- $25.00 a person for about an hour's ride through the woods. The staff there was very helpful and encouraging, especially the guides who led us through. The only drawback is that because there are all level riders on the trail, they wouldn't let you ride any faster than at a walking pace, but that is understandable. Would definitely recommend checking the place out for a relaxing afternoon. I believe they do lessons as well. read more

I unfortunately did not have a good experience here. Most of the staff were nice however the guide got pretty annoyed and was yelling at me during what was a pretty scary experience. There is little to no instruction on how to manage he horses. Then if there is on the ride you can't hear it at all if you're in the back of the line. The "trail ride" is through pretty uneven rocky ground. My horse decided to take off galloping in the woods up and down hills and among 5 foot boulders! I was doing everything i was told (meanwhile getting smacked with branches in the face, getting slammed into a tree nearly cracking my kneecap ) and the guide was yelling at me. It was a pretty unpleasant experience and I do not recommend it. read more

I went trail riding here for the first time. Upside was the horses were pretty good. Both of our guides were friendly, especially Trevor, who wanted to make sure you were having a good time. The trails are beautiful, of course. Very hilly, and lots of obstacles which made it more fun. They had us trot twice for about 15 seconds, which was probably what my less experienced friend could handle. However, I was not overly impressed. 30 dollars per person for an hour...which was actually 40-45 minutes top on the trail. They automatically have you ride Western, which was a huge downside for me. My friend was a less experienced rider, and they have her the more difficult horse. This is probably a better stable to go to if you have never ridden before. read more

Children under 8 are not allowed to ride the trails but for 5 dollars they can do a breif ride on a trail throughout the stable. It is a fun experience for them- the staff are very nice and assisted with photos so that with the memories, the kids have a picture to take home with them. For the kids who are a bit unsure about the horses- ask for Peanuts, he is a dwarf pony and is extremely friendly and mild mannered. His short stature seems to put the kids at ease. read more

I've been going here for the occasional trail ride for years and while the owner is a bit abrasive, I've never encountered the issues others have mentioned here. After our experience today, though, I'm never setting a foot on that property again. My horse was a little fidgety after I got on but before the string departed. The owner stormed up to me and started screaming and hitting the horse to get him to stand still, and telling me that he's a completely broke cow horse and has no excuse for not standing. They also sent a dead lame horse out on a trail. This horse, Fritz, cannot WALK without pain, and he stood completely camped out when allowed to halt. I have seen enough horses with laminitis to know what I'm looking at. This horse was dragged out and ridden for an hour over rough trails, and I am disgusted with myself for not saying something. Do not go here. They have no respect for the animals that pay their bills. They also have no respect for you. read more

I am an experienced rider who was looking to take my boyfriend trail riding. After finding them through their website, I called to ask some questions about pricing and if he could take a moment to become comfortable on the horse since it would be his first time and he was a little nervous. The woman on the phone exclaimed NO I don't have time for that! And launched into a long rant about how no one was going to waste their time walking someone down 45-50 minute trail attached to a leash. This was not at all what I asked, and her nasty tone was unbelievable. I tried to explain that this was not what I meant- but she kept cutting me off saying NO I'm NOT doing that! Further, I asked if we could just take a moment to look at the horses and see if he wanted to go ahead with the ride- again she was nasty, yelling, "No one here has time for that! You will NOT be permitted to interact with our horses at all before the trail ride. We have laws and we are just too busy to bother with this you can look at them from a distance in their paddock." Perhaps I caught her on a bad day- but her rude tones, dismissive attitude and inability to have a decent conversation with a potential client certainly lost these two riders. I would not want to be stuck on a 45-50 minute trail ride with that woman. Good luck to anyone who is. read more

I took my 13 year old mentee to Sunset Stables so that she could experience horseback riding for the first time. We had a beautiful trail ride through the woods and were even able to see some deer. The whole experience would have been great, however, the staff were extremely loud and bossy. The woman who collected our money screamed at her staff members, and then those same staff members screamed at the horses and riders. They would shout "Kick him harder, treat the horse like an ex-boyfriend!" "You're not kicking hard enough!" "Don't let him eat grass- pull his head up-PULL IT- PULL IT HARDER!" Literally, screaming these demands. It took the enjoyment of out what should have been a wonderful trip. read more

Great facility but wildly disappointed in their service. I signed my two daughters up for horseback riding lessons on Saturday afternoons at 2:00. First lesson we arrive, all goes by perfectly. Was so happy I purchased the girls riding helmets and boots thinking we could pursue this year round. The next Saturday we show up and are told that the girls can't take the lesson together and one will have to go before the other (extending the overall lesson time to two hours). This wouldn't have been so bad but we had a commitment at 4, so they worked with us and got the girls in together. The next Saturday, same thing. The third Saturday, they were running so far behind we left and haven't gone back. MY IMPRESSION is they take a much higher interest in the trail rides. I understand they are a business, but why sign children up for lessons and make them wait because all of your staff are off giving trail rides. Why can't these separate business programs run parallel to each other? They could make so much more money! I have talked to other parents with kids in lessons here and they have experienced the same thing. What bothered me the most was that I never knew who would be working with my children. Since horseback riding has a potential to be dangerous, as they struggled to find people to work with my girls, I became uneasy. I would gladly return my girls for lessons if I knew they could receive their lessons with consistency, but I am not sure this business can provide that. read more

I have taken classes at Sunset Stables in Lincoln for about 2 months. Everyone there is really friendly and are very concerned with horse and rider safety. They showed me how to properly groom a horse and they've changed the horse I was learning on from a Mustang to a Thoroughbred mix because the Thoroughbred was easier to handle, which was true. My riding has improved and their encouragement keeps me coming back. Lovely location. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience here. Their website and brochure state that children 8 and over can ride the nature trail I brought my nine year old and was told she could not ride because " she looks like she's five". I was basically laughed at and told there was no way they could accommodate us. My daughter was very upset not just because she had been looking forward to this but because she was just humiliated publically in front of patrons and employees. When the rest of my party arrived a owner/manager came over to apologize for his employee and said that my daughter could ride. We weren't sure what to do, but as we had already driven a distance we decided to give it a try. The ride was $30 per person. The guide Christine was wonderful, but after the ride the same individual who was nasty earlier proceeded to yell at my daughter again for petting a horse that was leaning over the fence. We wanted to make this a monthly trip but that will not be happening here. Luckily we found another stable in Berkley that is welcoming to children and more ressonably priced too. read more
