This review is solely for kids instruction. I was very much looking forward to enrolling my son…read morehere, but there's absolutely no discipline. The hour-long "lesson" is basically a free-for-all. Kids run around and scream with no consequence. Half the lesson my son just stood looking around. The sensei (don't know her name, but I believe she's the only female sensei who handles kids instruction) had no interest in commanding respect or attention. Towards the end of the lesson during zazen one girl around 9 or 10 yelled "don't tell me what to do!" at this sensei, and as I sat there in utter disbelief, this girl's comment was completely ignored, which is absolutely unheard of in the martial arts world. Long story short, this is a great hour of babysitting if you're looking for your kids to be occupied, but a huge waste of time and money if you're looking for them to gain any sense of discipline or responsibility for their words or actions (which is a huge part of martial arts training), or for them to learn aikido in a traditional environment. This might only be the case with the one sensei whose class I witnessed, but it really left a terrible impression. I do hope this changes in the future, as I've heard phenomenal reviews of Sensei Lehrman, and in regards to scheduling for kids they do offer a ton of weekly class options.

Our family is pretty picky (especially, my husband, who was involved with Martial Art himself and…read morehad high standards and demands). The kids were still quite young-6 and 4 years old. But after the first class we began to see the amazing value of the classes at Aikido of Park Slope. I can't rave enough about the skilled, able, professional, patient and kind aikido instructors at the Dojo (which is beautiful : vast, stylish, clean). They are not only skilled aikido masters themselves, but attentive, humorous, intelligent teachers. I could say they help my husband and I to bring up the kids:) And besides teaching aikido (moves, terminology, public exams, seminars, etc.), the kids play fun physical and mental games, they also learn about interaction with each other, patience and respect. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, but disciplined. Today my kids (13 and 11 years old) are learning the responsibility of being older students -Dojo etiquette requires older students to help the younger, to set an example ( a great tool to build self-respect!). They have been promoted to the level, which allows them to take adult classes. Overall, studying at Akido of Park Slope made them better people (IMHO).

I clarifed that my kid has special needs, would they still be able to acomadte us in the classes. I was told and reassured by the lady at the reception that the instructor is great and they would be able to accommodate, "it wouldn't be a problem." It didn't go well the instructor didn't have any patience. The last class we attended, the instructor sent my kid out of the class, in front of the students and parents calling her a, "trouble maker". When I spoke to the instructor about my kid, he told me that he was not aware of my kid having special needs. The lack of communication between staff members was appalling. One of the observations I made, they seem to want to prefer cookie cutter students. Those who aren't don't seem to get the same attention as the others, "it doesn't seems your child wants to be here." Was a comment made to me by the instructor. Most of the time there were 6-8 students with just one instructor. We really wanted to be able to like this dojo and be part of their team. Before moving to the area my kid did attend a different Dojo. Our experience was completely different from here. Improvements that could be made is deffinatley better communications between staff members. If there are more than five students an assistant seems logical. Having an instructor or assistant that has professional experience working with kids. This should be a must!! if there is a class for kids around five years old. Our previous Dojo offered free classes to a local kindergarten teachers assistant in exchange to come and assist in the lessons.

He not a drill sergeant, but rather a great teacher. He treats his pupils respectfully, and his students all listen to and respect him in turn. He knows every student by name--even the ones who are sitting in on their first class--and in each class he manages to devote individual attention to all of them. I have no doubt that Instructor Q would be a gifted teacher in any subject area he chose. My boys tried a different Tae Kwon Do center and couldn't make it past the trial period. They didn't enjoy the martial arts instruction or the fitness routines. Here, they are dedicated to their lessons and committed to their practice, and they are already working towards their second belt test.
