Sunset Gardens has a small pumpkin patch. They were setting it up today and should be ready by this afternoon. We stopped by for local honey since it should help us adjust to allergies. They have herbs (mints, basil, cilantro, herbs buena, etc) and mums as well as kale!

Bought this 4" peace lily for under $6 from Sunset Gardens.

As many times as we've been to the Riviera, I don't know how yesterday was the first time I've ever seen Sunset Gardens. It isn't exactly hidden, there's just a lot going on when you drive down Doniphan so it might not catch your eye unless you're actually looking for it. My husband brought me here yesterday (a Wednesday) because I told him I was on the quest to find a peace lily and he had been here years back. Even though I was looking for an indoor plant so I should've immediately made my way inside, I decided we had to make a detour and check out all of their outdoor plants first. Such a large variety, all at very good prices for the area, and all well maintained. While we took our leisurely stroll, we were greeted by a man and asked if we needed any help (I didn't catch his name and I was so wrapped up in the flowers, shrubs, and trees that I didn't ask if he was the owner so I'm no help here). I let him know that I came for a peace lily, but I was just checking out the outdoor plants first. He let me know that they did in fact have peace lilies which meant our trip wouldn't be a bust. Eventually we made our way inside and he was super helpful and pointed out all the sections of peace lilies (since they had different sizes, each size was in a different area). Again, I had to look at everything! Every plant was well taken care of. Nothing that looked like it was on its last leg. Everything had been watered appropriately. After looking at the size varieties of the peace lilies, I decided that the 4" was the best for my needs (small 6" pot in my bedroom so it had room to grow but wouldn't outgrow the pot too quickly). I picked up one, took it to the counter, and was rung up... less than $6! That's a great deal! I'd absolutely recommend Sunset Gardens for all plant needs. Next time I want to check out their soil selection and pick up some of their outdoor flowers. So many choices, so well maintained, a great shop!

I browsed their outdoor section and wasn't greeted by anyone (but that's alright because I like to just look around and ask for help if needed, I'm a very low maintenance customer). Quite a few plants looked sad and dying... even some cacti (didn't look too happy) and agave (leafs were burned on edges, some brown, and there were dead yellow leafs at the base). It made me feel sad. As I was walking back to the car disappointed, I found out there was an indoor portion. The inside portion was beautiful. It seems this is the area where they put most of their care. They even have some very nice outdoor cacti thriving (these ones looked happy). There was a great variety of plants ranging from jade plants (a couple of large ones that got turned into trees), peace lilies, cacti, ZZ plants, mother-in-laws tongue, monstera plants, pothos, and ferns such as ribbon fern. The place is a little pricy but it has a good variety.

That is the reason I've pretty much stopped coming here unless I'm looking for a rare type of indoor plant.

High Desert Native Plants is the only nursery in El Paso specializing in affordable plants native…read moreto the Chihuahuan Desert. Since I have what I'd call a "black thumb," I figured I'd do best with plants suited to the El Paso environment. I love gardens, but not the work that comes with them, so I focused on plants that require no mulch or fertilizer, and minimal watering. So far, I've purchased sage, evergreen sumac, creosote, a desert willow tree, and various species of Hesperaloe--and I haven't killed anything yet! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. At 70 years old, my digging days are behind me, so I always include planting with my orders. I'm not great at garden design, so I typically start with a rough idea of where I want the plants and ask for their advice. Their suggestions are always spot-on, and I follow them to create a yard that I'm genuinely happy with. "Focal point" wasn't something I used to think about, but now I have several beautiful focal points in my gardens. Lastly, I rescued a small dog who can jump 5 feet, so I needed to raise my 65-foot rock wall from 2 1/2 feet to 6 feet. High Desert Native Plants completed the work in just two days, and the wall looks fantastic. They did such a neat job that there was no cleanup needed on my neighbor's side! A note: The nursery is usually open by appointment, so it's best to call ahead. Their stock can vary, but they can source many different desert native plants from places like Arizona and New Mexico.
