Ah-mazing! First time coming to Sunset Clipps and I FINALLY found my hairstylist magician, Jason! I came in with long hair that carried a life that no longer fits who I am. I told Jason to cut it all off! I showed him some styles I liked, my usual maintenance, shared what I was comfortable with in regards to length and asked him what his favorite cut to do with women. He sculpted a look that was tailored for me and I love my hair! After he finished chopping 10 inches off the back of my head, I told him 'I have never felt such great concentration during a cut.' I appreciate and respect Jason's technique, vision and flow. I didn't have my hair washed (I had just washed my hair this morning) because there was no time, for an hour straight Jason was working his scissors and styling magic. Sunset Clipps and Jason are the best experience I have had in a barber chair...I'm never stepping foot in a salon again. Thank you Jason! He also has this out-of-this-world product he used on my hair, it's the future replacement to hairspray. It's called Neuma Texturizer (Define). Overall, the happiest I have ever been with a haircut and I am thrilled to have found my stylist! You cannot beat their prices and Jason gave me a hug farewell and wished me 'happy new beginnings'. So I went in to get my gray covered , let me preface I have been growing out my gray for over a year .... you know that ageing gracefully bull ! I can't express what an AWESOME job Jason did. This review is a long time coming. I found Jason via yelp when I first moved to OB and he is the BEST. $25 for an amazing women's cut with a glass of wine (or beer). Pay a little extra and ask for a "Black-n-Decker blowout" and you will come out looking like a million bucks! I have lived many places and this is my favorite hair salon everrr! Alright, I'm a wandering soul (nurse) and with that comes a questionable hair cutting history. I'm pretty low maintenance, known to take the scissors to my own hair, and frequently forgetting about the necessity of hair cuts for years on end. Of course, I'm impulsive and rarely make appointments for days or weeks in advance. I woke up this morning and decided it was time for a cut. I had heard about Sunset Clipps from Yelp and some other local Obecians. The price was right so I scheduled an appointment online. His website was painless to schedule an appointment and had plenty of openings for today. I think the majority of his business are walk-ins and men, because while I was waiting for my appointment there were at least 3 or 4 men that came in to get their haircut. He also thanked me for breaking up the monotony of cutting men's hair. I made an appointment with Jason, the owner, to get a cut and style. I got there a few minutes early and waited as he finished up. The decor is amazing, super OB style. Free popcorn, large TV, and even some random games to play. I sat in the chair, and Jason asked me all abut what I wanted to get done with my haircut. I told him and he delivered. He was friendly and easy to talk to. I actually hate small talk with everyone, but he made things super comfortable and conversation wasn't forced or uncomfortable. He also didn't ask the standard hair cutter questions ("You have big plans for the holidays?"). Before I could realize I wasn't getting a wash, which maybe isn't standard, he was already cutting my hair. I didn't mind, because I genuinely try to just let the universe work things out. I would recommend if you want a wash, you let him know at the beginning of the cut. For me, It didn't matter. (He dry cut my hair, and it really did end up looking great. Something that was low maintenance, that I could put up (I'm a travel nurse - don't want my hair getting in peoples private bits) , and that I could curl and do up when I was getting fancy. Also, you can get a free draft beer during your cut if you ask. He has beer "ON TAP" in the back. As a woman who LOVES beer, this alone is a reason to go back. So whether you are male or female, this is a great little local spot in OB to get your haircut. The price is right for the value. Support Local! read more

Jason is my go to. I have long hair that was bleached a year ago. I go for regular trims to keep the ends healthy and to keep the length going. I always ask him to just cut the bad ends and to make it look like it hasn't just been cut and he does a perfect job. Can't beat the price either. read more

AVOID MICHAEL like PLAGUE. Guy is a jerk. Within 2 mins of sitting down he told me my hair wasn't curly like I said, it was wavy + that he wouldn't cut my hair the way I asked just because I had never had anything better. Then asked me if I liked my hair style, I said yes, he said it was cut uneven. When I rolled my eyes at this, he told me to get out. Zero customer service. Didn't greet me, I sat there for 15min... Waited patiently for them to be done with their clients, trying not be rude and interrupt them and when they were done they continue to ignore me, and took their next customers without even looking at me!! While i sat in front of them!!! What did they think I was sitting there for?!! They couldn't give me 60 seconds of their time, To ask me how they could help me. I finally had to be rude and say "excuse me" when they took the next customers. They obviously knew I was trying to get in and book an appointment because she immediately said that I needed to book online, that's how everyone does it. She told me I could wait another 30 minutes for when she was done with her customer. Like I want to wait 50 min for some info to get a trim. They could had gave me 60 seconds (actually 30 seconds would have been enough) of their time to tell me to go ahead and book online and what length I should book under (my main question) I would have done that happily. Came in to have a 1-1/2 inch trim off my long hair by Jason. I booked the appointment on line. Jason made another appointment for same time. He was done and my hair was longer on one side so I asked if he would even it. He spun chair around and did some more fast and furious cuts and spun me back around and said there. He took about 15 - 20 minutes for the trim. I paid and left and when I got got home to look at my hair in the light I had a seriously uneven choppy trim. (It was dark in his shop.) I got my hair fixed and evened out at another salon. (Now my hair had to be cut much shorter to make trim even). I complained. He offered me a refund. When we showed up to get our money back he was angry and intimidating. Very unpleasant. I feel he could care less about me and my hair. read more

I have been trying to find a place closer to home, and after one colossal fail, I found it. Jason was awesome. I'm picky and only like scissors, so finding a quality and affordable men's cut can be challenging. Jason perfectly nailed it on the first try. I also found out that his son also cuts in the shop, and his younger daughter was also there helping out to earn some spending money. Salons like Sunset Clipps are true hidden gems. Started off as a quick search for a backup barber, ended up being my number 1 experience with a Salon. Jason was strongly recommended by other yelp reviews and now I know why. The guy has more than just an understanding for styling hair and shaving beards. Right when I walked in I was greeted with a friendly hello and offers for refreshments while I waited for my appointment. Though this was my first time, Jason did everything to ensure that I was in good hands and given an idea of my usual cut and shave he did everything perfectly and with time to spare! At the end it he told me about some great products that were priced for value (and not brand name) and made checkout quick and easy. They offer online reservations as well, which is a huge convenience for me as I can just schedule without being put on hold. Jason is the coolest "OBecian" I've ever met! He has the best attitude and brings a whole new meaning to hair dresser. I walked into Jason's comfortable barber shop with my boyfriend without a scheduled appointment and luckily he had time to see us. He styled my boyfriends hair exactly the way he likes it (which is rare to find a hair stylist who actually gives you the cut you desire) . Sunset Clipps is literally the most laid back shop I've been to. It fits perfect in the ocean beach community with its beautiful beach sunset covering the walls and a choice in music to listen and relax in your element. The ambiance is something to remember.
