Sunset Boulevard is a 23-mile major street that goes from the PCH to downtown L.A. It passes through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It is known for its many historic buildings. It is also a very congested road to drive on. There are billboards everywhere advertising the newest movies coming out. Some historic buildings include the Sunset Tower, Chateau Marmont, Cinerama Dome and the Beverly Hills Hotel. A popular place to grab a quick bite is at Carney's - a yellow Union Pacific rail car that serves hamburgers and hot dogs. The Sunset Strip portion of Sunset Boulevard has been known for its nightlife scene going back to the 1950's. Many songs and films have been made about this area. I have driven up and down the Sunset Strip on a number of occasions. The Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy are popular clubs that launched the careers of many bands over the years. The Comedy Store is a comedy club that has been around since the 70's. Back in the early days, I used to hang out at the old Tower Records store on Sunset Blvd. I used to go there to buy new CD's and vinyl for my music collection. The historic Boulevard of Sunset has songs, stories and even a great movie of the same name (one of my favorite dark comedy/film noirs of all time) name after it and encompasses a huge stretch of the west side all way to the central/dipping into the eastside of Los Angeles, California. Taking spark near Sunset Beach and Pacific Palisades area winding through Brentwood, UCLA, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood to Silverlake and just before Chinatown a beat or so away from LA's Dodger Stadium where it fades out. The music scene, the melting pot of cultures, restaurants, shops, entertainment, neighborhoods, hotels and more is possibly unmatched with any others in LA. A very driveable, commute friendly (even via local city transit) often walkable in several parts and scenic connector to tons of major cross streets... You can find or get to just about anything you need via Sunset. You can enjoy some personal favorites like the House of Blues, The Roxy Theater (a-okay), The Viper Room, Whiskey a Go Go (too much fun), Prince Street Pizza (best NY style pizza in LA), Akbar (all inclusive lounge bar), El Cid, My Vegan Gold (nom nom), Tiki Ti (cheers in a tight space), several major network building and/or studios not to mention famous schools like LA Film School or Hollywood High (where I almost attended before moving out of LA for several years just before my freshman year). Parking on Sunset is like most major streets and for a few sections of it there isn't any... Sunset Blvd. starts at the beach and goes all the way to Downtown Los Angeles, but you will not be picking it up there. You will either grab it off the 405 freeway or on Doheny Drive and take that a bit past Vine Street to get all that the Strip has to offer. The drive is very crowded so be patient but there is a lot to see. If you start on Doheny, you will be at the start of the Strip. You will see great places to eat, shops and of course The Whiskey and other famous bars that have great music. You can park around The Whiskey and walk or just drive the entire Strip. It is fun, especially at night. Again it is crowded, but that is okay. It is fun and if you are visiting Los Angeles, you must go. Now, if you are walking, your wallet, day or night, is in your front pocket and no you don't want to buy a watch. It is well patrolled and safe, with the above note. Also, don't even think of having a drink or 3 and driving. First, that makes you an idiot and second you will be stopped and to jail you will go and your car will be towed. Have a great time. I love a great drive. I love Mulholland, Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, PCH, Palos Verdes Drive along the ocean, and others. But Sunset Blvd., from beginning to end, knocks my socks off. So my review #1400 is dedicated to this 22.5-mile stretch of paradise that seems to represent what LA is all about. The only longer stretch of road in LA is Sepulveda, at 25.5 miles. Apparently, Sunset originated in DT LA, by Olvera St., near the end of the 1800's, then over the years was slowly extended to reach the ocean. Beginning inland, you'll pass through historic Angelino Heights in Echo Park, and Sunset Junction in Silver Lake, before you enter West Hollywood. You'll pass right by Blue Goose Lounge in Little Armenia/East Hollywood. Now some very good times have happened there, at BGL (just ask Diddy & 5am & the rest of the Donkeys....) In WeHo, you'll pass Bonhams & Butterfields auction house, where I've spent many an hour waiting in line in the blazing summer sun for their free appraisal fair. Like Antiques Roadshow, it's a blast, where some thrift shop finds have turned into big $. Then comes Sunset Strip, where I've seen a girl peeing in the middle of Sunset Blvd. at midnight. No, it wasn't after the infamous Yelp Prom back in '07 on the Strip. The only thing in the middle of the road that night was Theo's mullet wig, looking like a roadkill...... I'll never forget when my son & I drove along the Sunset Strip right at sunset, a few years back. Due to large fires burning around LA, the setting sun was a giant, glowing red-orange ball....what a sight. It was at that moment when I realized how the street probably got its name. Keep heading west into ritzytown, past the pink Beverly Hills Hotel and pristine little Will Rogers Memorial Park across the street, complete with koi ponds. Now begins my fave stretch of Sunset Blvd., as it winds through BH, Bel Air (UCLA), and into Brentwood. By the side of the road, you'll see those people selling maps to celeb's homes, only in LA.... Then into Pacific Palisades. And speaking of Will Rogers, he had the good sense to build there, many years ago, and the property (up a hill, just off Sunset) is open to the public. Keep going through charming Palisades village, and on Sunday stop at their farmer's market on Sunset for a homemade ice cream sandwich....like I did a couple weeks ago. Then head for the ocean, past the Lake Shrine. Right here, at the last turn before descending the hill, is the most amazing view. Green hills meet the sea in one breathtaking blast of scenic wonder. One of several gems of Los Angeles. Sunset Blvd hosts a wide array of lounges and bars. Open both in the AM and the PM, there are plenty of options when entertaining friends from out of town. Daytime usually allows for a relaxed vibe. Great poolside venues include the Standard and Skybar. A good dive bar to hit up is the Saddle Ranch. Evening time bring more options, and can accommodate varying tastes. At night, Skybar and the Standard become more exclusive, and sometimes you cannot get in unless you are on a guest list. The Saddle Ranch is still a good option in the PM. Cabo Cantina is another option, though the establishment is very small compared to the rest of Sunset. There are plenty of other venues as well: the Viper Room, the Whisky-A-Gogo (where my cousin played with his band a few times), the Comedy Store, and 1Oak, to name a few. Business casual will get you into most establishments, and enjoy a good meal at Boa Steakhouse, which is at the border of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. read more

For some reason I can't think of Sunset Blvd without thinking about three things: famous comedians, hair metal bands of the 1980s and that line in Pretty Woman at the beginning and end of the movie where the street guys say "Welcome to Hallehwood, was yo dream!" Maybe it's because, hundreds of funny people we know and love got their start at the historic Comedy Store, located in West Hollywood right along the strip. Maybe it's because in the days of glam rock and hair metal (and maybe even a bit before and a bit after) places like the Roxy, The Viper Room, The Rainbow and the Troubadour were the places where musical careers were launched, discovered, nurtured (and even ended). Or maybe with all the majesty, history, glitz and glamour of the strip and the various iconic LA landmarks that Sunset Blvd connects you too once you're walking it, maybe this is the place that attracts dreamers and visionaries now as it has for generations. Los Angeles is truly the place where, if you've got what it takes you can live your dream. If ever a single Blvd could represent (at least in my eyes) the heart, soul and spirit of a city Sunset would be that for Los Angeles. I live a hop (not even a hop, skip and a jump off Sunset) and have been up and down this street, restaurants, shops and a few nightclubs over the last few years and have to say it is worth a gander. Walk it, stroll it or you will miss most of it. There are bakeries, shops on the backside of shops. There are lots of stars eating next to you. Heck, they shop at Whole Foods in West Hollywood everyday. I enjoy a lot of the restaurants for a quick bite and have brought guests to the Comedy Clubs and even a few nightclubs. I just really enjoy walking the strip at Sunset. read more

Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's bright. Yes, it's crowded. This is the Sunset Strip! The infamous Sunset Strip, whadda ya expect!?! It's something everyone who visits or lives here should do. Take a stroll, late at night and breathe it all in. I'm not talking about the smog, the cigarette smoke or the . . . well, we'll just say medicinal smoke. I am talking about the sights, the energy and the cool vibe of Hollywood. Where old meets new. Where anything goes and where the annual Sunset Strip Musical Festival takes place. I followed Horace Greeley's advice and went west, southwest, all the way to Sunset Boulevard, where writers actors and musicians huddle to generate inspiration. I never saw my name in bright lights. At the same time I don't regret a minute of my Los Angeles residency. It is an inspiring metropolis where money and glamour are yours for the taking. But I suspect not without sacrifice. You must work at it, and be willing to suffer the sting of failure in order to be somebody. Bill Faulkner and Keaton, Capra and Jim Stewart learned this to be true. Once you get to the top, and achieve glory, then the car-ride (with the top down) from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica Beach is twice as sweet. Even without the glory, cruising down Sunset Blvd is a breathtaking journey. Pulling out of Union Station in your cherry red convertible, rockin the raybans, you and the wifey roll pass the taco trucks alongside historic Echo Park. As you approach Silverlake's Sunset Junction, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory are visible high in the hill country. Zip pass the trendy Los Feliz eateries on Vermont, right through Thai Town and Little Armenia. Cahuenga's another sight for sore eyes on account of the Arclight and The Cat & the Fiddle. At the red light, you see your reflection off the glass of a stretch limousine. The wife points fingers at Hollywood High a block south of The Roosevelt and Grauman's. Your foot is steady on the gas, hair blowin in the wind, Isaac Hayes on the turntables, sippin on orange julius. So this is the infamous Strip, nightclub row and Chateau Marmont. Plunge through Doheny and you're in Beverly Hills and Bruin country. The long winding road twists and turns as green pine trees suddenly surround you. There's Will Roger's and Palisades and your cherry red wheels keep forging ahead, onward around the sharp bend. The road narrows as your car grinds to a gradual halt at the brink of the Ocean. You turn to your loved one and whisper in her ear, as the sun sets over the edge of Sunset Boulevard. read more

It's the ultimate high life of Los Angeles. You have everything going on here! It goes from one extreme to another. There are grungy bars to the most posh restaurants in the city. Experience a belly-aching good laugh at the famed Comedy Store to a kick back live show at The House of Blues. You can literally spend a week on The Sunset Strip and still not do everything that this historic street has to offer. Giant billboards top the buildings and people from all walks of life comb the street. If you are coming to visit Los Angeles for the day, you must take a stroll down the boulevard during the day an and night; you will definitely see the difference from the day life scene to the night life scene. Drive west and you run into the palm tree-lined neighborhood of Beverly Hills which also leads to the the Westood/UCLA/Bel-Air area. I have to say that this was one of my favorite parts on Los Angeles; the vibes are definitely just that cool! read more

The Sunset Strip is a major thoroughfare used to get from Hollywood to West Hollywood and beyond. The boulevard itself runs for many miles both east and west. It is the epitome of what a typical tourist feels is part of the Hollywood experience. Some great restaurants take up residence on Sunset, including The Pikey, Oliver's Prime, and Church Key. But I absolutely hate trying to find parking on the Sunset Strip - it is difficult and can be expensive. And the traffic on the Strip, especially at night, can be brutal. Sure there's traffic jams, swinging apartment complexes and celebrity heroin overdoses.... But.... There is something special about a ride down Sunset Blvd. Just the other day I was driving back to my house from an outing and pulled up to the stop light on Sunset and La Cienega. So this Rolls Royce with personalized license plate enblazoned with the trademarked name of a world renowned porn magazine pulls up beside me. The chauffeur appeared restless for the green light. The man sitting in the passengers seat turned his head slowly and our eyes met. He looked like a hybrid of one of Ezekiels cherubin and an upscale acromegalic pimp decked out in pajamas and diamonds sitting on the mercy seat of his turbo tabernacle. Despite the secretions drooling from one side of his mouth, he shot me a come hither look with a glint in his eye- lit up from the reflections of the flashy billboards that dominates this legendary, multi-laned thoroughfare. It is a facial expression which has become widely known as "the Sunset Blvd look". Then he gave me a knowing smile as if to convey that he had just soiled his diapers and needed to be whisked back to his gated estate for a clean up. I smiled back, nodded affimatively, and made a right turn onto the Blvd against the red light. It was a brief but intimate exchange. OK I admit it I have lived my whole life in the Bay Area and I hate LA. First because of the Rams but eventually because of the way the overgrown suburb that is LA has literally sucked the life out of the rest of the state. For perverse reasons I spent my first 3 nights ever in LA proper, I have spent something like 5 other nights is Southern California, but this was the first time actually in LA. The town was everything I expected it to be and Sunset Blvd. was a perfect example. I did not make it past the strip from downtown because I was taking the local bus (#2) and it was so slow the sun set before I got to the beach. How does one describe tacky, those first few blocks out of downtown reminded me of Crescent City before they built Pelican Bay or much of Bakersfield now. On and on endless blocks of tacky businesses and ugly apartments. The only interesting thing being the residential units that stretched uphills with no parking for the residents, in a town where the car is king. I did have the pleasure of being offered an opportunity to join an attractive but crazy women for a free dinner at some charity but I allowed that I was ok. I got off the bus at the strip, which of course is no longer the strip, Dino's and "77" Sunset Strip are buried under a decidedly ugly modern building. The stores are all pretentious garbage and there is hardly a bar or restaurant in sight. It is time to go back to my Hotel but I have to urinate. Into a cantina, for a $6 Negra Modelo????????? I was in some luck, it was "happy hour" so I got two for that price but come on $6 for Negra Modelo give me a break. So tacky and expensive that is Sunset Blvd. and I would suggest all of LA. You will never see me again except in passing. I will allow that the interior of the Bradbury building is gorgeous. How many of you Los Angelenos have seen it. And if you care Raymond Chandler was correct about your police as recent events confirm. read more

For me it was home for many years. I went into the service in 90 and when I got out my parents had moved to Oklahoma. Grew up on Sunset in the 80's and saw many GREAT shows! I haven't been back yet but its a plan! It was great being an 80's kid! My wife will love it!! read more
