Today, I witnessed a heartbreaking hit-and-run where a truck struck a dog. She was bleeding…read moreprofusely from her mouth, and no one stopped to help except me. I rushed her into my car and drove to the closest vet -- VCA on E. Charleston & Nellis -- praying they could save her. What happened inside was shocking. The receptionist, Penny, first concern wasn't the dog's urgent need for care -- it was who would take financial responsibility. She slid a form toward me and told me I needed to fill it out before anything else. When I hesitated, overwhelmed with emotion, she made it clear she "didn't have time for this" because she was the only one at the front desk. She then suggested I take the dog to The Animal Foundation, about 4 miles away. Someone eventually came to take the dog to the back, but as they walked away, they sarcastically said to the receptionist, "Is she taking financial responsibility?" -- as if the priority wasn't saving a dying animal right in front of us. I walked outside, feeling shaken and heartbroken. Shortly after, the vet came out to tell me she wasn't breathing and recommended putting her out of her misery. The receptionist even followed me outside to again push the form on me "in case someone came looking for her," which made no sense since I was just a witness trying to help. This was one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life. In a moment where compassion and urgency should have been the priority, I was made to feel like an inconvenience -- a burden. I will never forget how cold and transactional the interaction was while an innocent life slipped away.
