I had no intention of coming in. The tiny pantry in my tiny kitchen is full, but I was shopping at…read moreTJ Maxx next door and thought 'let's just see.' I was impressed! There are more cashiers than I've seen in any other Trader Joe's. Accounting for what they knew would be a high-trafficked store, the aisles are wide. Plenty of merchandise. Clean, well-stocked. Same prices I paid when I shopped at Trader Joe's in Roswell GA though -- and it may be my imagination -- the bag of frozen Gyoza Potstickers (something I always buy) seems to have shrunk. The First Avenue bus is right outside. Convenient! I would avoid rush hour and weekends when the store could get super busy. I don't want to struggle with purchases on a crowded bus. But I'll surely be back, mid-week, mid-day.

This was my first time visiting this Trader Joe's location…read more I'll start with the positives: the line was short and moved quickly, and they did have some of the items I was looking for in stock, which I appreciated since I was short on time. Unfortunately, the experience was heavily overshadowed by an uncomfortable situation with a security guard who followed us around the store. It was very off-putting and honestly diminished the entire visit. If I hadn't been in a rush, I would have left my items right where I stood and walked out. Security should be focused on individuals who are actually stealing, not hovering over someone carrying a tiny bag where nothing could even be hidden. Because of that experience, it's unlikely I'll return to this location. I may consider trying a different Trader Joe's someday, but this visit left a very sour impression.

On the way out not realizing I forgot to pay for the smoothie ( had just had bloodwork done and felt extremely lightheaded) the security guard completely harassed me saying I had been there last week and saw me on camera! I had never ever walked into this store in my life. I apologized and said I didn't mean not to pay for the smoothie-went immediately to the cashier and paid. Meanwhile the guard and got the owner/ manager who insisted that he caught me on video camera last week! Again I explained that I had never been in the store before and had stumbled upon it on way from the Drs office. I tried to apologize saying I don't live in the area have never been there before and just walked in after a Doctors appointment because I didn't feel well. The guard and the owner/ manager continued to harass me and continiued to rant saying they caught me on video camera last week. Insanity!!! I will never ever set foot in that shop again and hope nobody experiences this. So glad I do not live anywhere near this awful store!

Agata & Valentina was in NY before many other gourmet markets, other than the fabulous Zabar's…read moremarkets. If you're on the Upper East Side, closer to the East River, you've no longer got the beloved Eli's Vinegar Factory to shop at. It's mainly Agata & Valentina on 79th and 1st Ave. There is also Gristede's and D'Agostino's, for more every day items as well as gourmet fare, unless you are a Whole Foods Shopper (3rd and 88th). But the first two grocers offer more mainstream selections. Agata & Valentina has a real family component for local residents, but also has the transient dynamic being on a main avenue (1st). I love splurging on their cheeses, gourmet snacks, prepared foods and bakery treats. I would like to go back to try their homemade pizzas and pastas. Just driving down 1st Avenue, and by it, I smile. It's definitely a highlight for me. They serve coffees and breakfast cafe food before 11:30am. And even though it advertises as an Italian/Sicilian market, I always thought of it as a very broad Mediterranean selection. Check their events online, as a few times a week they have pizza making and cookie decorating classes for kids. NB-- yes, Rachel Ray worked here.

EDIT: around 8:30 the same day I went back and spoke to both the GM (Dan) and the other young women directly. If it occurs again, I will be going to someone else.
