My family and I were in town for the weekend my daughter cheer Competition held inside the Convention center. Over the two days while waiting between performances and awards ceremonies me and sometimes my family walked the surrounding areas and explored as the public art scene here is plentiful and creative. One of the cooler places we discovered while exploring the area. The canal walk we noticed when checking out the 9/11 tribute. We went down a flight of stairs and while walking along the canal we noticed on the underpasses on each side was murals all the way down Therese magnolias with the bright green background really pop with the reflective canal water and gives it a very peaceful and Nice viewing experience. Overall very cool piece and a very nice area this is located in. Very pleasant to walk around and discover.

I happened upon this mural because it's located on the side of a building of a photography studio…read morethat I was visiting. It's a huge and striking piece of public art. You can see it from the street. A big ol' red bird staring off into the distance. Speaking of red: Did you know that the muralist -- Nick Abstract -- is colorblind? At least, that's what it says on his website. I can only imagine what this red bird looks like to the artist. Is this red bird a green bird to Nick? What are colors, really? Maybe what I think of as red is actually not red but a different color. So many things to ponder. I was so fixated on the bird when I saw the mural that I didn't even realize that there is text on the other half of the wall. It says "stay true" in graffiti lettering. But yes, there are words, and this mural takes up the whole side of the building wall.

This is a very nice mural of Indiana's state bird, the cardinal. It was painted by local artist…read moreNick Smith AKA (artistically known as Nick Abstract) Believe it or not, Abstract is color-blind. The motivation behind his works is his younger brother, Sean, who has autism. Abstract was commissioned by Onyx & East (local home builders), who has some newly constructed high-end condos right across from the mural. He completed the mural in late 2020 and it is 80 feet wide and 24 feet tall. The mural depicts a very realistic cardinal perched on a stump with tree branches and green leaves in the background. There is also the phrase, "Stay - True" in graffiti style lettering and much smaller version of that saying in regular lettering, for those of us that are not fluent in graffiti, in the center of the mural. It is all very realistic and life like. There is metered street parking available on the road in front of the mural. So you can park, get out and take a closer look, if you so choose. You can get a half decent look doing a slow rolling drive by, if that is you flavor too. Anyway, as with most murals I have visited, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 3 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals and memorials in the area to maximize your time and trip.

This mural(s) is part of Jiffy Lube's mural program in conjunction with Indianapolis Art Council…read morewho commissioned local artist Megan Jefferson, with the assistance of her husband and a few Avon High students to paint them. It is a two-part mural, one on each side of the building. The first mural was painted in 2019. The second mural was painted in June 2022. The murals were painted directly on textured cinder block, making painting the surface with a brush tedious work. So, Jefferson, used exterior latex paint with a paint sprayer to complete the mural. I must admit that the two murals kind of resemble each other. Which is by design because Jefferson wanted the two pieces to complement each other. I like the layered color scheme that Jefferson uses in the murals. The original mural was completed in a day by Jefferson and her husband. For inspiration, Jefferson drove around rural Avon taking pictures of interesting scenery. This mural depicts a rural area set against a setting sun. The second mural depicts some birds against a colorful sunsetting sky Flying in formation high above an Indiana corn field, or at least I assume it is in Indiana. I like this mural. It is very pleasing to the eyes. As I mentioned earlier, the color scheme is awesome and the art work is on point. The murals are very colorful and somewhat basic, but I like them. I also like that Jefferson used her platform to help students learn the craft. I saw an interview that they did and they were so stoked. Parking here to get a closer look is pretty simple. You can pull into the Jiffy Lube's parking lot or the mall's big parking lot next door, get out and look as long as your heart desires. I pulled into the big lot and the mural was right there. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

As part of the "Every Part Matters Mural Project", Jiffy Lube has been seeking artists to bring art where people go, and sometimes, least expect it. Begun in 2016, the art project has all types of images and will add five new ones in 2019. The first to be completed is this Avon location. Inspired by her travels through the rural area surrounding Avon, artist Megan Jefferson created this beautiful sunset landscape of rural Avon as the subject. The Arts Council of Indianapolis has helped the owners of the Jiffy Lube stations to seek out artists. The project has become so popular now that Jiffy Lube is getting far more submissions than it has stations to paint. It's nice to have options! Review #2658

Normally, I am a big fan of Carl Leck's mural work. He has a great collection throughout the City…read moreof Indianapolis. This was one of his early large works and it was coordinated with the annual Lilly Day of Service in 2011. Leck designed and laid out the template for this massive space so that Lilly employees could come by on their LDoS and do a "paint by number" mural. Once they had done their best, Leck followed up by evening out the paint job and cleaning up the spills, the lines, and any other adjustments he felt necessary to finish the project. The mural is also part of the SuperBowl mural project "46 for XLVI". The odd fact about this mural is that due to its size, it was counted as five of the 46 murals. I don't think anyone other than Leck knows where the actual boundaries are for each piece. The name Trivergence was selected to represent the merging of three public trails that meet in this location: The Cultural Trail, the Monon Trail, and Pogue's Run. The site is a difficult one to maintain as there is a lot of ground water runoff from the interstate overpasses which tend to wash out the color and sometimes, discolor patches that need maintaining more frequently. The is a beautiful mural. It overlooks a parking lot that belongs to Marigold Clothing…read more(coincidence, or not?) and is located on the back wall of the Broad Ripple Pub. Marigold clothing is the store to the left, as you are viewing the mural. The mural is the work of Christopher Blice and Jon Edwards of the decorative painting and marketing company Blice Edwards. They painted the mural in 2019. It depicts a small assortment of flowers, featuring a Marigold, hence the name along with a butterfly and a bee. They are set upon a twisted colorful ribbon and a colorful background of mostly yellows and greens. You really need to check out the murals shading while you are visiting. It is amazing. The detail on the mural is awesome. Blice Edwads are very talented and have some really nice pieces across the city. This mural was a nice addition to the area and adds a bit of color. Being that it is in a parking lot, so of it may be obstructed by parked vehicles, but you should still be able to get a good look. Parking to get out and take a closer look at this mural is not an issue. since it over looks a parking lot, be it a private one. But I am sure you will not be there long anyway. One of the more well known artist groups in central Indiana is Blice Edwards. Together since 1993,…read morethis partnership between Chris Blice and Jon Edwards has been adding beautiful artwork (primarily paintings) to the area based out of their small studio near 54th Street. This mural "Marigold" was added in 2019 just a short distance north of the studio. There is a shop off Cornell that is called Marigold Clothing which has a small parking lot to the west of the shop. A large wall of Broad Ripple Brewpub is adjacent to the south side of the lot. It is this wall that the team has added giant marigold flowers along with a butterfly and honey bee. A large slightly twisted ribbon arcs across the background of the mural adding a rainbow of color to the wall. All visitors to the shop who park in the lot (rather than street park) will be able to see this unobstructed artwork. For fans of this art, know that you can find other pieces by the duo around town, including up in Westfield (although the piece was a sculpture that is being moved for construction). Down on East Michigan near Mass Ave, a three story image of James Whitcomb Riley was painted. A giant pegboard mural featuring lots of tools is painted at the former Angie's List campus. And all around their studio, including the Posh Petals Floral shop and the patio "Butterflies" of Gallery Pastry Shop, are featured more of the team's work. Review #3328

As soon as you cross another public art piece called rainbow bridge you look up and can't miss this fun little piece for the area. Proudly boasting of you are open then they are as well. A perfect Motto for a vibrant little neighborhood such as itself. Overall a very fun and cool photo op and a very fitting slogan for This town.

This is a nice 3D mural that welcomes visitors as they cross over the world famous Rainbow bridge…read moreleaving the Art District towards the Business District, the heart of Broad Ripple Village. It is located on the side of the Red Room Night Club. The mural incorporates the areas seal and motto and depicts a white shopping bag with the words "Broad Ripple Village" on it in a decorative/artsy font (the Broad Ripple Seal). The bag has thin pink hand straps on each side. Coming out of the top of the box you will find a row of house in broad ripple architectural style. Above the row of house are items that are significant to the area including a flower, a guitar with a musical note, a steaming hot coffee cup, a bottle of wine, and a paint brush. This houses and the significant objects are divided by a banner that reads "we're open if you are" (Broad Ripple's motto). This motto has a dual meaning. It refers to the bustling nightlife the are has to offer, with the bars closing at 3AM. It also refers to the areas diversity and open mindedness. Is it by coincidence that the mural faces the Rainbow Bridge, a beacon of the area's inclusiveness. The mural overlooks a small commercial parking lot, so parking to get a closer look is easy. There are also metered parking spots within a short walk that you can park as well. The third option is to view the mural from the comfort of your vehicle, doing a safe and strategic slow rolling drive-by. However, for this to work, you will have to approach from the Rainbow Bridge. As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. I believe that this was once a nice mural. However, it has deteriorated very fast. It is severely…read morefaded and the business that it is on, Union Street Flower & Gifts, looks vacant. As others have mentioned I really like the 3D aspect, but it needs to been renovated soon before it hits the point of no return. The mural is the work of Jon Blice and Christopher Edwards, artistically known as Blice Edwards. They painted the piece in 2011. The mural is pretty busy and depicts a blooming flower with a lot of imagery that symbolizes the city's history such as "34" which represents 1834, the year Westfield was founded, the North Star which represents the underground railroad which went through the city, a shamrock, representing Westfield High School's mascot and "31" and "32", which represent the convergence of these two highways known as the "Grand Junction." There is a lot going on here and without context or very intimate knowledge of the city it is just a lot of stuff. The fading and deterioration just compounds the issue. I love the work of Blice Edwards as a whole, but I am really not too fond of this one. If you would like to get a closer look of this mural, there is street parking available in a reasonable walking distance and there are a few lots that you can park in as well. I recommend parking across the street to give you the best view because the mural is so large. As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. The mural seems to pop out at you from the north wall of the Union Street Flower & Gifts. So, it seems appropriate that the murals contains brightly colored flower petals and other shapes to reflect the purpose of the business inside. The mural was completed in 2011 by the artist team of (Jon) Blice (& Christopher) Edwards. This mural is part of Jiffy Lube's mural program in conjunction with Indianapolis Art Council. They…read morecommissioned Shamira Wilson Young to paint it in 2018. The mural is a metaphor for the energy of movement inspired by the social fabric, textile technique and the multi-cultural diversity of the community surrounding the area. Much of Young's work uses stripes as a graphic device which largely comes from textiles. It took her 15 days and 14 gallons of paint to complete. The abstract design depicts a line that is woven vertically that fades from orange to yellow against an intersecting line that is woven horizontally and transitions from pink to dark red. It is meant to represent the back and forth motion of the process of weaving and also reflect the motion of movement and transportation. I am normally not a fan of abstract art and this is a basic design. However, I like this mural. It works for me. I don't know, the colors just grabbed and hypnotized me. It also helped that I had context while viewing this mural, which is huge for me. Parking here is pretty simple. You can either park in the strip mall parking lot that the Jiffy Lube sits in front of or pull right into the Jiffy Lube parking lot. Interwoven is a colorful art installation on the side of the Jiffy Lube near 56th and Georgetown…read more The art shows two loops of color that are overlapping. The vertical loop has an orange line that transitions to a light yellow the higher it goes, then returns to orange as it lowers to near the sidewalk. The horizonal loop starts as a deep scarlet thread and lightens to a pale red (almost pink) by the time it reaches its lowest crossing. The background is white and visually pops between the crossings. The work was created by artist Shamira Wilson Young (Indy) who worked with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Jiffy Lube of Indiana. Jiffy Lubes throughout the state are adding original public art and will continue the program in 2019. This piece was added in 2018. Review #2276
