I love the idea of Karma Teachers, but after taking their yoga teacher training, and supporting…read morevarious staff and volunteers in the time following, I feel that it is a very toxic environment, and one that does not reflect the virtues and ethics it espouses. The executive director / business owner has regularly and openly engaged in romantic and sexual relationships with employees and volunteers under his charge, students under his tutelage, and yoga practitioners seeking his services. The executive director / business owner disavows wrongdoing, but has taken steps to isolate and ostracize young women coming forward to ask for support from the community that they have helped create. The biggest insult is that the organization sells itself as community-based and community-run, and teaches a more traditional approach to yoga that includes codes of ethics and moral conduct that yoga teachers strive to emulate. Unfortunately, the executive director / business owner does not practice much of what he preaches.

Very Disappointed - Fees and Cancellation Process Were Not Clearly Explained…read more I joined Club16 Maple Ridge only about 40 days ago. Unfortunately, because of my work schedule, I'm no longer able to attend regularly, so I decided to give the required 30-day notice to cancel my membership. That's when the surprises started. First, I was told that I still have to pay an annual fee during my cancellation period. When I originally signed up, the annual fee was explained to me as something charged once a year, and my understanding was that it would apply after completing my first year of membership. I have only been a member for about 40 days! If an "annual fee" can actually be charged within the first couple of months--or even after you have submitted your cancellation notice--this should be made VERY CLEAR when you sign up, not discovered when you try to cancel. But there was another surprise. When I joined, I was told that everything could be done through the app. Apparently, everything can be done through the app EXCEPT cancelling your membership. To cancel, I was told I have to physically go to the gym. So now I have to leave work and go to the gym just to submit my cancellation. In 2026, when memberships, payments and account management can be handled digitally, why can't a cancellation request be handled the same way? I completely understand paying the regular membership fees required during the 30-day notice period. What I don't agree with is being surprised by an "annual" fee after being a member for only about 40 days and then being required to physically go to the gym just to cancel. For me, the issue is transparency. Fees and cancellation requirements should be clearly explained before someone signs a contract--not discovered when they decide to leave. If you're considering joining Club16 Maple Ridge, I strongly recommend asking for a complete written explanation of every fee, exactly when each fee will be charged, and exactly how you can cancel your membership before signing anything. Very disappointing experience.
