As…read moresomeone with no prior martial arts experience, I thought Giju and the group/class were welcoming, friendly, supportive, and encouraging. Giju seems genuinely invested in helping students succeed at their own pace. The training is challenging enough to push me outside my comfort zone, but not in an intimidating way. The classes keep me wanting to come back even after a tough class, instead of just giving up completely. The class atmosphere feels safe, positive, and supportive, making it an excellent option for beginners who may feel hesitant about starting martial arts. It feels like a comfortable space to learn, a "no-judgement zone"! The studio itself is spacious, filled with natural light, and equipped with plenty of training equipment suitable for various skill levels. There is also ample free parking in the plaza, and the location is easily accessible by transit with nearby bus stops across the studio. Traffic in the area is generally manageable as well (quiet during midday). If you're looking for a martial arts school that balances challenging training with a supportive and welcoming community, I highly recommend Isshindo!

I've always wanted to try kickboxing but felt a little scared to be honest! I heard that your…read morefirst class at Budo would be free so I signed up on the website. The first class was so much fun -- we did 5 minutes of straight skipping to warm up. Then, we got into partners and worked on techniques like blocking, front kicks, roundhouse kicks, and body conditioning at the end. Don't worry about bringing any equipment -- they will provide gloves for you to use. (They have a deal for your first month that includes new gloves). I would suggest to bring a friend to try it out for your first time because it's all partner work! If you like it, they have a Groupon deal right now: 10 classes for $29. I liked my first class so much that I bought the Groupon and completed the 10 classes over a 1 month time period. Now I'm super motivated to continue! I like how the vibe at Budo is not intimidating. It's a really welcoming environment and the instructors are really encouraging. I also appreciate how they explain the "why" behind things when they teach you the fundamentals of the technique. This type of training is awesome because it engages both your mind and your body. It's fun and challenging, and you're guaranteed to sweat like CRAZY and feel awesome after!

My eldest enjoyed both the gi and no gi classes with Uriel. I also have my youngest son who has speech delay and has never trained before. I was hesitant to enroll him due to his special needs but the class size turned out to be relatively small. I did mention to Uriel about my son's delay and I couldn't thank him enough for being so accommodating and attentive to my son. He was always patient and he provided a safe and encouraging environment for all the kids. The place itself is big, clean and well maintained. The staff are always nice. We would definitely do this again next summer when we are in vancouver.
