My dear friend and I went to the Sumo House last night to hear Kate sing. We had the most delightful waiter who was extremely accommodating. We ordered pad Thai with shrimp and pork. Oh, it was delicious. Such flavor in the noodles and the shrimp were so large. We ate every bit accompanied by a glass of wine! When I first moved to Vero 6 years ago, I lived near the Sumo house. My wife and I ate there regularly for lunch or dinner and really enjoyed the food there. When we moved to Northern Vero, it kind of fell out of our rotation of frequented restaurants. We recently went back and remembered how much we loved the food and service. My daughter had the pignan curry with chicken. I had the pignan curry with chicken and beef, and my wife had the chicken pad Thai. The broth of the pignan is delicious and the beef and chicken was very fresh and plentiful. My wife loved her Pad Thai. We also had dumplings and spring rolls for appetizers, as well as fried cheesecake for dessert. Everything that came out of the kitchen was a true taste sensation. Using Yelp is definitely a blessing when looking for food! I just recently moved to the area and was searching for some good sushi, I happened to come across Sumo and I do not regret coming here one bit! The food is so fresh and amazingly presented! The staff was so friendly and welcoming, constantly checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. When you pull into the parking lot, the restaurant is a little hidden, which was nice. This place has some delicious food! After five visits, I can confidently confirm their sushi is delicious! This place is located in a smaller strip mall (look for those blue lights!) and upon walking in, you see the sushi bar, some booths on the sushi bar side, and a huge adjacent dining room. We've sat at the bar with the boss, and this pokeman-hat wearing sushi chef knows what he's doing. He and his team prepare wonderful creations with plenty of choices for everyone, yet we find ourselves ordering the same things over again! Our favorite items include the tuna pizza, which is a toasted tortilla topped with avocado, raw onions, beautifully sliced raw tuna, evoo, salt, and these fried daikon radish slivers. This item is BOMB. We love the Wahoo Salad. Cucumbers, daikon, carrots maybe? in a ponzu-like sauce drizzled with a kimchi sauce on the bottom, and it's all topped with gorgeous Wahoo sashimi slices and that's topped with those fried daikon slivers! These daikon slivers are insanely good so proceed with caution! Heema Roll is our favorite- shrimp tempura, spicy mayo, veggies, topped with tuna slices, tempura flakes, eel sauce, spicy mayo (we get this roll without the eel in it but you do you!). Tuna tataki is a solid dish here as well, and always check the front board when walking in for the fresh sushi/sashimi fish specials. Toro, Uni -both fresh and delicious when available. Last time when at the bar we ventured out and had the Engawa and another fish - one was Japanese snowy grouper and one was seabrim. Both were absolutely delicious and fresh, and we're glad we ventured out! They have beer and my favorite Japanese beer at that... Kawaba! They also have some sakes as well as other drink options. Cheesecake tempura here is super naughty and yummy if we leave room. Service is efficient, and we usually have "Mel" and she is fast and professional! Well, I heard great things about Sumo House and so decided to give it a try. Here are some random thoughts, observations and impressions: Ambiance - in a word: creepy. Dark, brown, wood panel from the 70's, dining room seems stark, cold and institutional. Sushi bar is small maybe seats 5 or six. Food - not bad, not amazing. Sushi pieces are about average size. Sashimi slices on the small side. No uni (my fave) sashimi does not come with sushi rice on the side. Eel was good. OMG roll was good. Everything else average to below average. NOTE WELL: the menu seems to be primarily Thai food, with Japanese thrown in. My conclusion is that Thai cooking is their comfort zone and they added Japanese to accommodate certain diners. So let me suggest that if Japanese / Sushi is what your seeking primarily, go elsewhere. Service - I dine at various Asian restaurants about twice a week for the past 15 years. My experience has been that the staff at such restaurants are generally very polite, unobtrusive, courteous and hard working. It's their DNA and it's in their training. However, our waitress here was an absolute bee-aach. Rude, rushed, devoid of manners and any personality. Price - average value for the money. Happy to leave there quickly and go out for a late night pizza, just to put things right. :) read more

Looking for a Japanese lunch I came here with a co-worker. There was a hostess, after walking around the front area we were greeted and sat immediately. Service was good, friendly an attentive. The food was really good and for lunch and it was a large portion. The food quality was actually really good! I've been to many other Japanese places and this one was very good. The carpet and interior maybe a little dated but the service and food quality really make up for it. The booth has a divider that goes all the way to the ceiling. This makes it feel like you have a private little area. This makes Sumo house a great date night restaurant. Decided to try the Sumo House after a quick day at the beach. My husband had the sushi, tuna and salmon and I had the tempura chicken and vegetables. Both were delicious and the serving size of each dish was large and could feed 3. Thai tea was delicious and mixed drink strong. After our main course my husband ordered the fried bananas for dessert and I wanted to try the Thai donut. OmG! Portion for 4! And both were amazing. Super casual setting. The decor is dated and the lighting is a little darker than you'd expect but after your eyes adjust its fine.. it would be a better ambiance if they had some soft music playing in the background but they didn't so that felt a little awkward. But, on the plus side, the customer service and the food were outstanding and did not disappoint. Price is fair. You get what you pay for. This Japanese and Thai restaurant is tucked away in a small shopping strip and easy to pass by without noticing. We decided to stop in and give it a try. As another review mentioned, the interior feels run down and grubby. The interior decor could definitely use an update. The menu is extensive with numerous offerings. The 2-count spring rolls were okay. Our entrees were also just "ok." We ordered the fried rice with beef and the teriyaki steak. The beef was dry and the fried rice medley was overall quite bland. The teriyaki steak was dreadful. The steak was full of gristle and chewy, way too much sauce on top, and the sauce itself was too sweet. We stop in to enjoy the sushi, sushi specials and the various well-prepared appetizers....always delicious and worth a visit. For this we return and enjoy with some ice cold beers. Easily a four star meal. However, this restaurant SERIOUSLY drops the ball on the entrees......and we have tried a variety....always to be disappointed. Two stars at the very most. So we're done with that. Entree quality ranges from bland and lacking in any flavor (the stir-fries and fried rice), to poorly-seasoned and boring (the curries); to inedible, as the time we were served a Thai noodle dish that arrived as a tasteless pile of congealed noodles. THAT dish actually needed to be sent back, with the waiter giving a shrug of his shoulders and nothing more. My sushi had a thick wall of rice, (like thiccc), the fish also smelled (very fishy). Even when I eat fresh salmon out of the Alaskan river they don't even smell that fishy. I ended up only eating the avocado roll because then fishy smell freaked me out. For thick rice wall, and smell sushi -1 star. Service: Service was okay, nothing special. Friendly, but ya know, nothing special, kinda like a "hi, what do you want, okay see you at the end of your meal".Not minusing a star because they weren't rude or delayed. And then we asked for the kids chicken tempura... I think she said teriyaki, that should tell you something if I can't even tell what it was. We left the whole meal there on the table just as it came. On another note, the place had a nice dining area on one side... not the side where we were seated... maybe the food is better over there. I've never seen an Asian fusion restaurant that was worth a dang, and Sumo House is no exception. We're talking Chinese, Japanese, and Thai cuisines, and each one gets a C. Better they should have a smaller menu and focus on serving higher quality food. When someone says "don't expect big city quality food in a small town", this is exactly what they're talking about. One Yelper writes that the ambiance of this restaurant is "creepy". Laughable. No, it's not. The ambiance is dark Asian. Decor is largely Thai. Our server was Chinese. I actually thought the ambiance was nice. One small hiccup: we had dinner here, and they had a live singer/guitar player whose music was *way* too loud. His volume level was more appropriate for performance than for dinner background music. I found conversation at the table very difficult. I mean, who the heck wants to hear Van Halen's Ice Cream Man at a Thai restaurant? A bit odd. I'd like to share a piece of conversation I had with the waitress: Waitress: Was everything OK? Me: Yes, but the music is too loud. Waitress: What? Me: The music is too loud. Waitress: I'm sorry. I can't hear you over the music. Food-wise, it's a disaster. The meats in every dish were grossly overcooked. Dry and tough, the meats were just abysmal. Tom Ka Soup: C+ Chicken was overcooked. No galangal. No lemongrass. It was tasty, and I did enjoy it, but I honestly don't know what made this Tom Ka soup. Pad Thai: B- Not bad. The portion was HUGE!!! Could've used Thai flavors like nam pla and lemongrass, which was noticeably absent. Chi-Shi Salmon: D Horrendously overcooked. Inedible. Red Curry with Beef: C+ Beef was criminally overcooked. Crazy amount of bamboo shoots -- made the dish ultimately inedible; it was just too much. I would've enjoyed the dish better if they gave less of it. I didn't need a wall of vegetables; I would've enjoyed the dish if there were less of it and more curry. Thai food with a ton of tomatoes is a pet peeve of mine. read more
