The Farmers & Merchants Union Bank in Columbus was the last of Louis Sullivan's eight "Jewel Box"…read morebanks that he designed as his career was winding down. The other Jewel Boxes, scattered around the Midwest, are all still standing. (The Peoples Savings Bank in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was severely damaged in the Flood of 2008 and is undergoing renovation.) Sullivan, founder of the Prairie School of Architecture and the father of the modern skyscraper, was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. He coined the phrase "Form follows function." His signature was ornamentation, very evident on this bank, designed to draw the eye upwards. Terra Cotta ornamentation on the cornice are his exclamation point on his design. The Farmers & Merchants Union Bank was founded by John Wheeler in 1861. He chose the name "Union" in honor of Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to preserve the Union. On the cornice of the building is a Terra Cotta eagle, representing Old Abe, the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The word, "Forward" is cast into the sculpture, it is the motto of the State of Wisconsin. The bank also appears in the 2009 Johnny Depp film "Public Enemies" as a location shot for a John Dillinger bank robbery. (The bank was never held up by Dillinger.)

Personally and professionally would no longer recommend. Been a customer for roughly 35 years…read more Had been a positive experience until about 5 years ago and has only declined since. Long term staff that would advocate for relationships are no longer there. The Bank provides you with a finance rate to then only change the rate days before a closing. Renews loans sometimes months late and then charges you retro interest at the higher rate. They move on-time payments during the periods of their late renewal to a later date without permission. They will not consider matching rates of other financial institutions and they now slip in language at renewals that you are required to pay a prepayment penalty if you refinance elsewhere. This Bank no longer cares for their partnerships. You are now seen as a number by the Administration. There are still a few customer service representatives that are pleasant, but that has become the only positive remaining.

I have had repeated negative experiences at this bank. Some of my experiences were flat our racist…read morebut I do live in a small town and I am not white so I have a threshold for that, but still, at a big bank, I never experience that sort of thing. Most recently, the way this bank handles fraudulent transactions is enough to prompt me to move to a different bank. I decided to bank at Horicon Bank after moving from Wells Fargo, thinking that a small town bank in a small town would offer a better service, but my experience has been the polar opposite. At Wells Fargo, when there was fraudulent use of my debit card, I received very precise and accurate information (from empathetic customer service representatives), but at Horicon Bank every agent tells you something different and then blames you for not having the right information (yes, you read that correctly, I was told that it is my fault the bank gave me misinsformation because I called the bank rather than going into the branch, and they told me the late night staff simply just doesn't know how the bank works, uhhhh, what?). Then you end up getting charged fees for things that doesn't make any sense, and it's impossible to know when you can get your debit card back after they shut it down because of the fraud and everyone tells you something different, one says 8 days, one says 2 days then they say of come in today and we can take care of you in person, and in the meantime, previously scheduled transactions are chaotic. I do not recommend banking here if you are concerned about having a bank that is on your side when some limo company in New York City is trying to run your debit card. At least, in this regard, the big banks understand how to make customers feel safe and I'm going back to a bigger bank since Horicon Bank has no regard for customer safety or how fraud affects their customers. Dana at the customer service center was horrible and kept giving me misinformation and I hope in the future this bank can get their act together and learn how to treat customers better and maybe develop a better understanding of how fraud affects their customers rather than focusing on how it is an inconvenience for their customer service to serve their customers who become victims. I guess larger banks have a wider understanding in this area and can respond much better when crisis hits your bank account or debit card. Once I move, I will serious never look back. Except wait, maybe I will - they have one employee that works at the Piggly Wiggly branch who has been there a long time who is the most amazing, friendly and caring banker I have ever met - they should promote her to President and if she fires everyone and starts over again, than maybe things will get better for this bank.

The lines are long and its ridiculous to have 3 branches in one town with no inside service at any of them. We may be switching after several years of banking with them.

I have several accounts and my mortgage loan through Horicon bank, recently I was moving my money…read morearound as I usually do but due to a death in the family I didn't realize in moving the money around my account would be over drawn. I was shocked to find out that they do not send auto emails to alert customers of an overdraft, instead a letter is sent via snail mail! I would have sorted this out same day and avoided the trouble that followed. Because I moved money to savings a check for didn't clear, this was returned and I was charged 2 over drafts fees. I called and asked if I needed to send another check and explained the issue, that rep advised yes you will need to pay that bill again and rudely advised "we have to many customers to email you, that is why we have online banking". I asked for the fee's to be removed, she had to check with the supervisor and get back to me. She followed up 3 days later to inform me they would only remove one fee. I accepted that and thought I would move on. However that is not where this issue stopped, after I spoke with the Horicon bank worker I called the loan company regarding the returned payment. I was told by both ends the bill would need to be paid again so I sent another check, only to find out that the first check was re-submitted by the loan company and paid by Horicon bank as well as my new check. At no time was I informed this could happen by either party. Since I do not work in banking there would be no way for me to know. I called again and spoke with Adrian but was basically told there is nothing more Horicon bank would do for me, all I asked for was the additional service fee to be refunded as I now paid this bill twice and was out an additional $30. In the end I am disappointed but know it was intimately my error, I just cannot believe that in this technology driven world a bank couldn't automatically trigger an email alert instead of a letter or since I have been long time customer with multiple accounts and cash in all of them they couldn't cover this and contacted me. I will be re-thinking where my family and companies does business.
