Our 6th year participating in the is event that takes place on 3 Saturdays in August. We have so much fun riding our bikes over the manhattan or Brooklyn bridge each year. It goes from foley square off the Brooklyn bridge to 72nd st at Central Park. All riding or running along Lafayette into Park Ave. there are always a ton of events to stop and see or participate in from zip Lines, water slides, food samples, gym classes, live music, events for kids and this year a girls LG dishwasher that was a blow up water attraction. You can wait in long lines for a free bike Helmet. Vita coco always creates a beach st hokey square with free water and popcorn. Plenty of photo opportunities. When else can you freely and safely ride in manhattan?

Summer Streets is one of the few recent things in New York City that makes me feel like it's the only city I can ever live in. I need to first thank NYCDOT for fitting out free bike helmets. Adjacent to them at the midtown stop, tons of freebies from various vendors of Whole Foods. April of http://bikenewyork.org/, who gave me the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike; giving me a brief but extremely valuable and essential lesson in balance at the Foley Square stop. Last but certainly not least Betsey C. and Elaine M. - for lending me their bikes in trying to teach me how to ride. I was amazed at all the different runners and bikers. The diversity is what makes this city great and I was relieved to see I am not the only adult out there that didn't know how to ride a bike (yet!)

This needs to happen more often. As a Manhattanite there is always the dream in the back of my mind about the possibility of there not being any cars in the city. These weekends let you witness that dream in action. True, I hate bikes almost more than cars because most of the bikers in this city are crazy in terms on not yielding to pedestrians. My favorite part of this is walking on the roadway around Grand Central Station.

Summer streets 7am-1pm first three Saturdays in August when you can walk, run, or bike from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park traffic free. Enjoy a variety of organic and healthy snacks provided by Whole Foods, rock climbing wall, zip line, water slide thru the financial district. If you want to participate in the water slide you must pre-register online. Bike helmet give aways and good vibes. The lines are long for the freebie, however lines move very quickly. One of the best events of the summer and everything is free. The earlier you arrive the better. Get up its with it! http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/summerstreets/html/route/route.shtml

I loved this event! From a visitor's perspective, it was such a fun way to experience the city. I've been to NY probably 10 times now, but the idea of being able to ride a bike all over Manhattan had me giddy. Plus, I had my 10 year old niece with me and this was her first time visiting and I know this unique experience wasn't lost on her. All the stops had fun things going on, like the inflatable slide (we had to preregister for this) and great freebies like snowcones, water bottles, and floats. But honestly, the highlight was just getting to ride the Citi bikes we rented for a few miles down streets like Park Ave. We especially loved going past Grand Central and into Central Park. The only downsides were the bathroom situation. I didn't see any public portapotties set up and you'd be surprised how difficult it ended up being finding a coffee shop that was open when we needed one. So I ended up buying a $5 iced tea at a restaurant just so we could use their restrooms. Also, and this was very minor, people weren't always aware of others on bikes. So sometimes people would stop in the middle of the street or there would be bikers in the pedestrian lanes. Again, both these didn't impact how much fun we had. I thought this was a very well-run event and I'm honestly considering coming back next summer just to do this again.

Three weekends in the summer when Park Ave is closed off from traffic for people to play. There's a small zip line, rock climbing, bike rentals, yoga, etc. Zip lining and rock climbing are a big hit though. So make sure you have something in mind as your priority because you will probably only get to do one since lines are ridiculously long. I arrived when it opened and waited about an hour to sign up for a time slot for the zip like and then waited another hour to actually go on the zip line. It's quite small and is enjoyable for anyone who hasn't gone zip lining before. If you have, you can probably skip it because it doesn't really compare. The only difference is that it's in the city instead of around trees, which is cool. Bike rentals have a limit of one hour. Take advantage of the open streets while you can. It's also the perfect time to go running.

This has been a lazy summer, but I woke up at 6:30 today and figured might as well drag my butt to the city for summer streets 2014. This year it will be on Aug 2,9 and 16 from 7 AM-1 PM. I started off at 32 st and checked out the art installation in the Park Avenue tunnel. It was nothing much to write about, bunch of ocean sounds. Last year's light installation in the tunnel was much better. It was cool to walk in the tunnel though! I wasn't planning on walking much this time. But once I started walking back from 42 st I continued all the way to downtown checking out all the stops along the way! It was a good workout! The rock climbing wall and zip line were cool. At 9 o clock, the lines were starting to get long. The stop at midtown had free samples of food/drinks. Each of the six rest stops had different booths with freebies, exercise classes, free bike rentals and some performances. The best way to enjoy Summer streets is to get there early to beat the crowds and the heat!

I'm all for reducing my carbon footprint! Since becoming a Citibike member, I'm beyond happy to see that the city has created many more bike lanes for safe riding. However, midtown is still scary to navigate through, which is why I enjoy Summer Street so immensely. Yes, you'll have to be careful as bikers dodge around each other and kids cut in front, then stop all of a sudden, or pedestrians try to walk in front of the bikers. But it is a great way to get from one end of the city to the other without having to rely on public transit. So whether by bike, foot, skateboard, scooter, roller skates-- it's great to be a part of it. Next year, will try to ride all the way to BK. Great way to see the sights, get some exercise and drop off where you need to go at a timely pace.

NYC DOT has brought back Summer Streets for another three weekends this summer. I still don't understand why the simple act of closing down Park Ave to cars and allowing me to walk, run, bike, whatever is so much fun. Everyone out there seems to be having a great time not worrying about traffic.

3.5 stars. I like the idea of gathering us NYC folk, tourists, and whoever else is down, to engage in fun, outdoorsy activities in Manhattan. This event runs from Brooklyn Bridge to 72nd street and park avenue. The streets are closed off until 1pm for people to ride bikes, skate, rock climb, dance, jog and more. And get this, everything is FREE. From bike rentals, to helmet rentals, zip lining and rock climbing. There's even free food and drinks, which is mostly provided at the "Whole Foods Market City Picnic" rest stop. There are six rest stops in total. I think its wise to get here early to participate in activities. We came at about 10ish, and zip lining was already closed for the day, such a bummer. Since we didn't rent bikes, we ended up strolling from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Midtown rest stop, nice little walk. I'm not an early bird so being awake at 8am on a Saturday is rough for me (event runs from 7am-1pm), hence the 1.5 stars taken away. But because I enjoyed myself I will be back on the 9th. Hopefully we'll get to zip line and ride bikes.

Love their commitment to not canceling an event but would have loved if there was a rain date rather than rain or shine, and 3. I wish they let you buy individual tickets (not in increments of 5). Yes it was rainy and yes it was crowded (c'mon, it's times square after all) but still worth the trip on a work night into the city for a good time with friends and good eats (Lolz @ my friend holding my umbrella while I scarfed down food). They sell in increments of 5, so I got 10 tickets for $10 which is what they advertised for and later went back for another 5 tickets. Most foods cost between 2-3 tickets each... to me, 10 was too few tickets and 15 was too much (thus why I would have liked to buy 10 and then get single tickets from there). If you really want to make the trip worthwhile and sample enough, go for 15. Restaurant vendors I sampled from: 1. Patzeria Perfect Pizza - Tortellini with prosciuutto in the sauce (3 tickets) 2. Schnipper's - Mac 'n Joe (3 tickets) 3. Carmine's - meatball (2 tickets) 4. The View - Swiss chard Ravioli with truffle sauce (3 tickets) 5. Crossroads - Pretzel with "gooey cheese" (3 tickets) 6. Bubba Gump Shrimp - Birthday cake dessert (1 ticket) Of all of them, I was most excited for the ravioli based on presentation but somehow ended up being my least favorite... too creamy (though I'd still want to visit that restaurant as it looks gorgeous, just would order something else). My friend and I thought the mac n joe was amazing (mac n cheese with sloppy joe) and that the pretzel w/ cheese was a great snack (mmm warm pretzel). Tortellini is one of my favorite foods in general so knew I'd like that especially with that sauce. Glad I got to finally try Carmine's- I've never made it there due to it being pricey but at least this event let me have a sample for a grand total of only 2 tickets! Hope to return next year, on a sunnier day!!

The place was jam packed and I was supposed to meet some friends and was never ever to catch up with them. It's best to get their early because it was so crowded we could hardly walk in the narrow street to check out what each vendor had to offer. Since I didn't wait to catch up with my friends I just checked out the longest lines and figured the samples had to be good. I was able to sample some tacos, chicken wings, sliders and water for $15. The food was good but hard to manipulate and eat with the crowds. I wound up standing in a corner to eat my food or sitting on the sidewalk to devour my chicken wings. There were different areas of live entertainment and New Yorkers and tourists seemed to be having a great time. Next time I will come prepared and wear a small bag and get there early to check out more vendors and get more food items..

Drinks are everywhere, and there's really nothing better than walking up and down the middle of 9th avenue with an ice cold beer in your hand, be it the $3 thai beer or the $8 coney island pilsner. There was a lot of food - not as much from the local restaurants, but plenty to choose from. There was a gyro every 6 feet, plenty of sausages and peppers, plates of paella the size of the moon, and plenty of meats on sticks, including gigantic turkey legs. Oh, and fried oreos -- which I avoided because Dough was there, and I was suddenly feeling that a midday mocha donut would pair really well with my beer. Spoiler: yes, it did. In any case, there are other vendors (plants, crafts, soap, clothes, art, etc.) to look at, plenty of music, and when all else fails -- some really interesting people watching. The weather was sunny and beautiful out. The macarons were amazing as always. And, as always, the crowd was overbearing and annoying. Whoa! Talk about inconsiderate tourists who don't understand how to move aside or what personal space is! This street fair is always packed, and if you are the type that can't stand crowds this is not the place for you. You literally have to fight and push aside people to get from one food stand to the other. Too many people gawking at everything and taking pictures, blocking your way, but not buying anything. For the love of God, would people with kids in baby carriages please stop coming to these festivals? All they do is block up the pathways strolling along at a snails pace, or running into the back of your ankles with these over-sized rolling baby cribs. Take it onto the sidewalks already people. The rest of us would like to get by. Stop insisting on shoving your kids down our throats! Now that my rant is over, I can say I did enjoy the festival for the most part. Live music, waiter race contests, and yummy food. The crepes were awesome - I had a banana and nutella which I scarfed down instantly. Also had a steak sandwich from Bistro Chat Noir that for only $6 was a great deal, and along with a beet salad for $4 made for a nice lunch. Had the most amazing macarons from Macaron Cafe. There was a little bit of everything French here. Baquette stands, macarons, desserts and pastries, crepes, sandwiches, drinks, you name it. If you are willing to fight through the crowd and be patient you can sample some wonderful foods. Spent a few hours there and then bailed out. All in all, it is a decent festival to go to for a few hours on a nice day, sample some tasty treats, but not to spend that much more time there. Some high end names had stands with their usual offerings. They were overpriced as usual. I was really tempted on several occasions. I already had my carbs for the day. No food for me this year. I believe it is usually in JUNE. I want to attend next year, for sure! Last year was great & all the other years that I was able to attend--they were all great. My point is, this is ALWAYS A GREAT TASTING BBQ. So, try to attend, you'll be glad you did . AND--There is GREAT LIVE MUSIC, TOO!!! Free live music. Please check out the big Apple bbq website for more info. This is a fun, happy, yummy event & you should be there if you love great food & great live music. Mark your calendar....now, for next year...so you don't forget.
