I arrived in Benagil and it was time for lunch. I ended up at Sul Mar, a family run Portuguese restaurant situated off the Benagil road.
The offerings we're fairly standard and the ambiance has a simple vibe. Very local flavor. In fact, the owner family was eating lunch together at a large round table when I arrived.
The service was good. Unrushed as always in Portugal. I ordered grilled fish but didn't ask the price. Huge mistake. This is why I'm giving the review two stars.
The fish was great (sea bass, I think), the veggies were a classic mix of boiled cabbage, carrots, a chunk of potato and broccoli. A big slice of lemon. Cost? 21€ . Yikes.
I had the exact same meal in Milfontes at A Choupana, overlooking the ocean with a superb server. 13€
Tonight as I passed by two restaurants I. Cavoeiro, grilled fish was 13 and 19 respectively and both of these places were high class, overlooking the ocean.
The other issue was that I watched an older British couple who sat at the table next to mine slip the owner/waiter, I believe, 40 euros and they had a bottle of wine. He had salmon and she had sole.
Caveat emptor. Ah the life of a traveler. read more
