Also milkshakes made from any choice of chocolate bar - ANY choice of chocolate bar? I very much doubt they have Chomps. We both went for a £3 Meal Deal which consists of a Vienna roll with filling and salad of your choice, a drink and crisps or chocolate bar. Service isn't exactly welcoming and smiley, but I'm guessing she was having a bad day. She appeared to have lost one of her disposable gloves... The crisps and drink were lovely, as was the bread. The 'chicken tikka' filling was flavourless and the salad (roughly chopped lettuce and three slices of 'cumber) wasn't the best either. But for £3 you get what you pay for I suppose. Not somewhere I'll dash back to.

Sandwich shops are ten-a-penny in this city but if you, like me, are a bit barmy about your barms and picky about your pickles, then Mia's is without doubt where you should be headed. This is a family affair, owned by Mia and run by her and her sister Danielle. These fellow curly girls know how to make a butty! They pack your slices full of deliciously fresh meats with all the salad accompaniments you could desire. Cream cakes, custards and for the healthy, fresh fruit are available beside the counter to tempt your palate. Mia's sells the least expensively priced jacket potatoes( £1.80 with fillings) I have ever seen and I defy you to find cheaper in Manchester! Any shop which makes scrambled egg on toast just how I like it, does it for me. If you prefer a hot bacon bap then Mia's will comply. This local sandwich shop may not have all the pomp and circumstance of city centre eateries- all expensive uniforms, huge hairnets and Ciabatta- but what it does have is excellent portions, scrummy sandwiches and service with a smile. My only complaint is that it does not open long enough because who knows what time I will get a craving for a good old sausage barm?

Trying to think how many fillings and combinations is like trying to calculate the amount of stars in the universe (1024 according to the all powerful google), but it's all a tad on the special side which is nice. So imagine replicating a ham sandwich for a Mediterranean tuna sandwich and your getting there. But all this specialness doesn't come cheap, with sandwiches beginning around the £4 mark it is maybe okay just for once or if your feeling crazy twice a week. Additionally there's not masses of seating which is a shame as the place is quite cosy. But on the whole, if your feeling classy head here.

If you're going to pick a sandwich chain, Philpotts is a great bet. They're based in Chester which in my book makes them entirely Mancunian... well not quite but they're at least Greater Mancunian, and it's a small chain. This Brazennose Street offering (remember how much I like Brazennose Street, remember, and not just because of its strange name) has everything you could want in store, from grab and go sandwiches to gourmet soups, cakes and puddings to piping hot coffee, and, well, wouldn't you know it, sandwiches made to order. Just exactly what you fancy. I find this confusing as I'm rubbish with a large variety of choice, but I know that you real proper people will find that just stunning. I myself prefer to take a template and add some of my own accessories. I need at least a base sandwich to start with. Just like with pizza. But the BF is the exact opposite and relishes in 'making his own', so this is perfect for those types. As you'd imagine the office crowd love this place at lunchtime so get there early to avoid disappointment. Plus there are all sorts of seasonal specials, with three exclusive offers to choose from each day. Philpotts also provide catering and business lunches with sandwich platters and made to order items. As chains go, this is certainly a superb choice. Praise be to Philpotts.

It is one of the few coffee shops at this side of Media City, without heading to the other side of the water at the Lowry Outlet where there is a Costa and a couple more bars and restaurants (Lime Bar, Costa etc). The store looks good and they had a nice selection of both indoor and outdoor seating and hot soups, including a festive soup which sounded rather nice. I do feel the staff weren't as good as other Pret stores though and the sandwich range seemed really depleted for regular standards, let alone gluten-free which they had none of. This is still a pretty nice, good-looking store in a useful, cool location within Manchester's Media City even though it does have a few flaws with cold food selection and the staff. 3*

The location gives it plenty of footfall and it's surrounded by other restaurant chains. I only wanted a coffee and I barely got much chance to study the menu as a server with nothing to do kept cajoling me and waving at me to take my order. I had to tell the dear chap to try to calm down and to think of his blood-pressure, but to no avail. I ordered a regular sized cappuccino - organic coffee beans apparently - and £2.25 into a paper take-away cup. I had thought soup but if they had soup it wasn't obvious to me. It had a few tables outside on the concourse, but the autumn chill meant I opted just to keep on meandering.
