##18 The Ultimate B.M.T.-
Vuoch L.

Inside a truck stop gas station "Pilot Travel Center ". Shared Clean bathroom with pilot convenient store . I had the BMT #18 fresh bread , the two guys who assembled my order were friendly . The table seatings were not as clean , most of the tables had debris and dirty. I had to clean the table myself before sitting down .

Classic storefront haha!

Back when I was looking for any kind of job, I interviewed in person at a Subway. It went okay. I like to tell people that I was rejected by Subway, which is kind of true, but in reality I think it boiled down to the schedule that I was available to work. Anyways, I usually always find myself in Avenal since I make the Bay-LA trek frequently. The pit stop is pretty cool since it features two 24-hour eateries: a Mexican place and Subway. Subway honestly hasn't had the best luck as of late. If you've been following the news, you might have an inkling as to why. However, the sandwiches remain as delicious and affordable as ever. Just wanting to fill up on some food, I came here with my sights set on my usual go-to: the footlong Spicy Italian on toasted Italian Herbs and Cheese. With pepperoni and salami and the jalapeños, banana peppers, cucumbers, pickles, black pepper, and creamy sriracha, I have a nice light sandwich with a bit of a kick. I'm giving this Subway five stars because of the stellar service I received from my sandwich artist. Like I said earlier, I applied to Subway back in the day, and my relatives and friends would all tell me that you just get treated horribly there. It's pretty true--people are either robotic to you or just plain mean. My artist, however, greeted me with a nice smile. I like to play a little game with myself to do certain things as efficiently as possible. That means making my food orders extremely clear and observing the training patterns of employees across restaurants and chains. Thus, I knew that I should first make my choice of size (6" vs. 12") apparent first followed by the type of bread. Then, I could go through and reveal the type of sandwich I desired. It's a pretty fluid process that ordinarily takes people a lifetime to master, but I've boiled it down to a science in a much shorter span of time. I know. I'm awesome. Anyways, I think she really appreciated it. In the end, she did something I've had no other sandwich artist ever do, which is actually suggest something off the script. She said, "No parmesan cheese? It would make it taste really good!" It was just super genuine, and it felt so much more than just a tired worker making my sandwich. In the end, she looked at me and said, "Nicest so far!" I wondered what she meant, but then I realized she was calling me the nicest customer so far. That made me obviously happy that I could make her job a little easier but also kind of sad that my common courtesies--saying please after each sentence, thanking her with every move--meant so much. It's just unfortunate the way people treat someone who literally makes up the hands that feed them. Anyways, she really made my day. Not everyone who works at Subway really wants to, but like everything in life, you have to make the most out of as many opportunities as possible. In the end, I'm really glad Subway hired her because she's doing a much better job than I ever could have done.

We saw that this had very good reviews and after reading some of them we decided to stop by. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Salad and one of us in my party decided on Cilantro Lime Salad and the third member of my party wanted a club house sandwich but was told they ran out of bread so she also order a Crispy Chicken Salad too. All three salads were great. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes and all fresh produce and the chicken was crispy. My friend who ordered the Cilantro Lime Salad really enjoyed it especially the cilantro lime dressing. Overall the service was pretty good and I do like the cute interior but there were a number of flies flying around. I think its because anyone opening their door lets in flies from the outside. A recommendation for those of you driving up northbound on I-5. Don't rely on Google Maps since their directions takes you longer to get there. They tell you that from I-5 to turn off on 309 and take CA-41 to CA-33 to Kings Street. Instead go up I-5 and turn off on 269. This way is much faster unless there is a back up on i-5.

I use to work in a small cafe back in the day so working in food service can be trying sometimes. I noticed they have added some menu items and Friday/Saturday dining options as well. Today they had a Monday feature of Tri-Tip Sandwich with either fries or fresh fruit. A free drink was included and I chose lemonade with cucumber and fresh mint. OMG that was delicious. They also had several flavors, strawberry-Hibiscus, strawberry, raspberry, and the cucumber mint lemonade. I chose to dine in and I received my food hot. The fries were perfect. Crispy and not greasy. I chose a hot chipotle ranch & ketchup. Yah, being a vegetarian is hard. I wasn't vegetarian today. I tore up that sandwich and left no crumbs ok maybe the butt end of the roll but that's for Buddha. While waiting I saw the advertisement for Friday night dinners & Saturday Brunch with Mimosas & Micheladas. It's just two staff so go easy on them. They off a 3% discount if you pay in cash. They also accept tap pay. Cool tunes too. Until next time. . .SYOYelp

It took us 1 hour to get our food. Regardless of the wait, the food still tasted very good. While we were sitting down at the table waiting for our food, one of the workers came up and started a conversation with us, which was really nice despite how busy it was and was something that I have never seen before at other In-N-Outs. I modified some items and asked for my fries to be crispy. When I got to the receiving window the first thing that was handed to me were the fries, which were white and soggy. I let Angelina know that I ordered them light well and asked if she could swap them to which I was met an annoyed face and attitude making me repeat myself 3 times and each time she asked "what was that?" With a condescending tone, it was as if I was bothering her. Not only were the fries soggy, I ate one and they were cold and stale...meaning they were definitely not fresh. While we waited for that to be done and received the rest of our order, we asked for things like water and spread, to which she did the same thing again. She had a raised eyebrow and annoyed tone and made us repeat ourselves 3 times with a mocking "what was that??" We get the waters and were missing straws, so again we waited for her to come back. When she finally gave us the new batch of fries I asked for straws and ketchup and the same series of annoyed faces and "what was that???" (3 times )was given to us. She rudely hands me the extra items and I tell her thank you very much and she just ignored me and turned around. I understand that INO is a busy place but thats no reason to treat a customer like that, especially when I was in no way rude in my interaction. & the store wasn't even remotely filled inside. All of us in the car were surprised she didnt even say bye have a good day or anything , we were just ignored after trying to be nice even through her shitty attitude. All that, and shortly we found a hair cooked into our fries .. :) so I dont really know what to say at this point. All I hope for is that Angelina gets confronted about her poor work ethic by one of the managers and hope that the hair was just a coincidence and not malicious by whoever she told to remake the fries. This is Popeye's behavior. Do better.

The bakery is part of the country store, which sells such random housewares and souvenir-type stuff. They have a chocolate truffle case on one side and the other side, the pastries and desserts. The pastries looked delicious and I got a few to try. They also have bags of day-old cookies for a good price. Eclair 4/5* I'm not a huge fan of eclairs with the soft fudge on top instead of the hardened chocolate. Taste wise though, it was a good eclair. The cream isn't overly sweet and the eclair itself was a light dough. Napoleon 5/5* If there's something Harris bakery does right, it's flaky pastries. Surprisingly, this Napoleon stayed crispy the entire drive home and survive even in the refrigerator the next day. Many others I've had usually get soggy, but these layers of puff pastry stayed crisp to the end of every last bite. The cream was fluffy and not too sweet, and paired perfectly with the ripe strawberries. Banana Cream Pie 3/5* I love anything banana and just had to get it when my eyes landed on the perfect swirl of whip cream covered in chunks of buttery crumbles, atop a neat little mini pie. However, the pie itself was too mushy. The crust was soggy, with the smoothness of the banana cream, soft banana slices, and rich whip cream, everything combined was too much mush. It was also too sweet. I did enjoy the crumble on top though. That was the only saving texture. Strawberry Cream Horn 5/5* Wow these were so unexpectedly delicious! The horn is super flaky and delicate, filled from end to end with a light strawberry cream. On top, bits of dehydrated strawberries were not only beautiful but added a nice tartness and texture, contrasting with the silky cream. This was a great upgrade on your classic cream horn. Chocolate Chip Cookies with Walnuts 3/5* Nothing special. They tasted better the longer they sat out because they were crisper. I prefer my cookies to have sea salt for that good balance of salty and sweet, but these cookies were just one noted. Next time, I have my eyes set on this towering cake they had on the counter and of course, take home some of those yummy cream horns.

It feels like our home away from home as we go back and forth from Northern California and to visit our family in Orange County. We always LOVED seeing the store and its unique gifts that filled the entire place. For some time, there looks to be maybe a quarter of what they used to have. So sad... I used to come and find a lot of my Christmas gifts for people during the holidays. This past Christmas, I went in and the place looked desolate. I was confused and wondered if I missed it all? I don't know if Harris Ranch is not doing well, but it really looks like they're struggling if you look at the empty feel of the store. We just left the shop now on our way back down to Southern California and once again shocked and highly disappointment. It was bad.. I really hope that whatever happening there gets better so that the store can return to the gorgeous shop that it once was.

Today since it was packed I decided to get a table at the Ranch Kitchen. Its all the same, menus, servers. So previously having done the prime rib and filet mignon, I decided to go a different route, the Jack and John's favorite sandwich. I thought Id be getting thin sliced NY steak.....wasn't expecting a whole 10oz grilled steak. So essentially this is like the upgraded version of Jimmy John's Roast Beef Sandwich and for 40.00 / sandwich, you're getting your dollars worth in protein. I also did their steak fingers appetizer, drenched in some kind of red wine reduced, caramelized garlic herbs gravy with hints of Worcestershire sauce. Sauce was a little acidic, sour, and I would much prefer if it was like a Lee Kum Kee Branded Black Pepper sauce with oyster sauce base. But regardless, paired with foccacia sour dough, it was more than an Appetizer, and Id say a stand alone meal. Recommendations for those that don't want a big lunch: just order the appetizer steak fingers, and a clam chowder. You'll equally be full.
