Two weeks ago my wife and I and another couple stopped in for lunch. Food was good and service was fine. Each of us had an entree and coffee and separate checks. The bill was presented on a chip reader. At this point I will confess to a lack of due diligence. I scanned the chip to ensure it contained the items we ordered and added a tip and asked for a copy of the bill. Later, thinking that $76.00 was a lot for two lunches and coffees ($46.00) I reviewed the check. I contained a 20% gratuity charge for 4 or more, a 3% credit card charge, my tip and taxes. I have never encountered a 4 or more charge, did not see anything on the menu and was not informed of such by the server. Cautionary tale, review your bill carefully. We will if we return. read more

The food is delicious and it has such diverse options for a halal breakfast place. The Poblano omelet and shaksukah are well done and tasty. The pistachio pancake are not too sweet and just right The Spanish latte is a little sweet for me but the espresso an excellent counterpoint. Came in on Father's Day for brunch and was very very disappointed. Restaurant was very busy ( understandably so but apparently they overbooked reservations) Was told wait for a table for 2 would be 20 minutes but were seated a few minutes before that but the hostess sat us outside (with out asking if that would be ok since it was pouring rain) we decided to go ahead a just go with it since we were pretty hungry. Upon seating, no one came around to offer us drinks for about 30-45min but other employees would swing by and promise that our waitress would be by soon. When a waiter came by he asked if we had been helped and when we told him no he said ok youre not my section but I'll take you. Which was very nice of him. At this point we had been waiting over and hour outside in the cold rainy weather and asked the waiter if we could sit inside since there was an empty booth that had been vacant for a while now and he said sure go ahead. 5 minutes later the "manager" comes out and tells us to move since that table was reserved. When we told him that waiter gave us the ok he said "he didn't ask and get permission" so he had us move to a different table and promised to check on the status of our drinks (matcha & latte) which we still hadn't received and the food. When we finally got our drinks, they were actually delicious. Some of the best matcha I've had. But they were pretty sweet and since we had been waiting ( at this point it felt like 2 hours + we were starving) I got very nauseous from the sudden sweetness and empty stomach. When we got our food, I couldn't stomach it. My husband (although not affected by nausea) took a few bites of the sweet chorizo skillet and said it was pretty inedible and tasted like pure sugar. The pancakes were also doused in syrup and very dry and crumbly. When the waiter came to check in we told him of the food and said he would comp it so we only had to pay for the drinks which again was very nice of him. I didn't catch his name but he was honestly the only positive experience of the restaurant. Honestly we won't be back to dine in and will probably only order drinks to go. I really wanted to love this place. We are visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this halal breakfast spot. We came in asked about the free parking they have advertised for at the door the lady at the front said it's easier (for them) if we park in the plaza next door :/ ok we did .. we ordered coffee took long when we asked the waiter said that barista is new :/ then we ordered food, we were 6 and 3 orders came wrong ( we didn't fight back cause we were in a rush to travel) we ordered protein omelette without cheese (came with cheese) grilled chicken wrap not spicy (came spicy) with side of fries (she got waffle fries and it was for extra fees:/) we all left disappointed honestly and gratuity was added in the bill as a must! Came to Subah Cafe right when they opened at 7 AM and honestly had such a good experience. The place was super cute and very clean, and the staff was incredibly nice and welcoming from the moment we walked in. I noticed they're on OpenTable, but at that hour the restaurant was pretty empty so reservations definitely didn't seem necessary. Parking can be a little tricky since it's on a corner intersection, but there's street parking nearby and I believe there's also a parking garage in the area. For food, we got the steak fajita skillet and the walnut banana pancakes. I had actually heard mixed reviews about the skillet before coming, but I ended up really liking it. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. It's honestly nice having another halal breakfast/brunch option in the Lombard area. The walnut banana pancakes were also really tasty and had great flavor. Only small downside was the orange juice wasn't fresh squeezed, which was a little disappointing, but overall everything else made up for it. Great food, great service, and a really nice atmosphere. We decided to try out the recently opened Subah Cafe on Memorial Day since we were in the area. We went at lunchtime and parked down the street. Double check that you park somewhere that's allowed. Subah has a nice corner location. The interior is spacious and looks nice overall. It has a farmhouse look. The black & white theme was nice, but the fake brick wallpaper looked cheesy. It was relatively busy when we went (1 pm), and pretty loud because the sound really travels. When I reviewed the menu, I was a little surprised at the high prices, but a fancy halal breakfast/lunch place is rare. Still, $7.50 for a cappuccino is expensive, as that's a basic drink that some coffee shops offer for $4 to $5. Anyway, we ordered a sweet chorizo skillet, a Reuben sandwich with waffle fries, and a burger & fries from the kids menu. The skillet was amazing. The eggs were cooked as I requested, it had plenty of veggies, and the chorizo had a nice kick. The sweet potatoes were a nice touch. The included pancakes were surprisingly good with a nice crispiness to them. They weren't the large, floppy, dry ones that other breakfast restaurants serve. The Reuben was pretty good, but my wife wanted more sauerkraut and sauce. The amount of meat was generous, though. Also, the waffle fries were excellent. The burger was underwhelming. I suppose this is to be expected, as the purpose of a kids menu is to keep the children satisfied enough to let the grownups eat in peace. The meat was dry, and it was just the patty and cheese in a bun. No mayo, ketchup, lettuce, etc. The fries with this dish were decent, but not as good as the waffle fries. New to the area, occasionally stopped in to get drinks from the cafe with my wife. Their matcha and coffee are excellent but are overpriced compared to other nearby cafe's. Went in for brunch and ordered the Subah Shakshuka skillet and was very underwhelmed with what came out. Maybe it comes in a specialty cast iron skillet but it looked nothing like the other skillets in the photos, the dish was peculiarly tiny. I added the sausage to it and it ended up being $23 for what was essentially pasta sauce -- no carb base either. I brought it up to the waitress and they knocked off our drinks from the bill, she was polite. I'll give the food another shot but I'll mainly be coming for the café as a special treat. read more

I would come often just to get a drink if it was cheaper because it was delicious and well made, but I can't justify the cost. Came for brunch with my husband and the food prices are also ridiculous. The food here is disappointing. The whole place is hinged off it being halal but the food sucks, the fried onions are from sysco. There is literally wood box crates on the ceiling for interior design and fake brick wall paper everywhere. The server had given hassle to a mom with a stroller because it would be a problem of walking space despite seating her in a booth and there was ample room. And the diced tomato's are all from a can. Do yourself and go to Egg Harbor, or Buttermilk cafe in Geneva, IL which this place is a knock off of. Also one server had her her butt 5 inches from my mom's face while talking to another table and completely unaware of her surroundings for a whole 2 minutes. Also the prices are outrageous $23 for beef bacon burger... And a soft drink is $5 for a pepsi can. Not to mention coke products are better. Coming here for my mom's birthday made me want to genuinely cry, I hated it so much and nobody was fit to be employed in a restaurant. This review will be updated when the cafe is open for awhile because this place is brand new! So new that the floors are waxy and slippery, so be careful! The cafe has a coastal vibe and was packed when we went Thursday morning. The full menu is not available right now. Our table of 7 ordered coffee, fajita omelet, steak fajita skillet, sweet chorizo skillet, chorizo chilaquiles, Italian beef sandwich, grilled cheese from kids menu, and a biscuit and gravy. Coffee was bitter though but my nephew enjoyed his mocha cappuccino. The portions were perfectly sized, not too much or little, so you don't need to share an entree like you would at other breakfast places. Our food came randomly which is fine for new restaurants, but our toast and pancakes came out really late. My biscuit was dry but the gravy helped for sure, I don't think I would order the biscuit by itself. Parking is difficult so pay attention to when you arrive so you can use the parking left over after the morning rush for trains. Our server did not rush us which is nice. Upon check out, I asked to see the detailed bill. We were already charged tip but that was not clear until I asked for the detailed bill back screen. It said service and fees, I could not see what the fees were for. In terms of flavor, we would order the sweet chorizo skillet again and the steak fajita omelet! They just opened so things took some time and not every item is Available but I recommend being flexible since they just opened had a great time and can't wait for the pink guava pancakes. Really beautiful, light and airy space. For drinks we got the subah date latte and mango cloud matcha. These were truly the standouts of the entire meal and some of the best specialty drinks I've had. For food qe got the eggs Benedict and chicken poblano omelette with upgraded sides of date pecan waffles and churro French toast. Standouts were the omelet and the waffles. What they did not disclaim was that they were completely unprepared to the point where food was not being cooked!
