Alternatively, you could go to Guangzhou, and risk getting proper shafted. Red Hall is a decent compromise between the sharks on Hollywood Road, and the, errr..., sharks in Guangzhou. Based in Mui Wo, it is slightly incongruous in comparison to it's neighbouring shops, being neither an estate agent or a Park n Shop. It is also slightly inconvenient in terms of shipping to HK "mainland". However, don't worry about that, they will deliver your furniture for a cost. The pieces in there are mainly the big ticket furniture items; wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, day beds. There are a few smaller items like kang tables, which incidentally make excellent coffee tables, and traditional stools, both of which you could lug home yourself on the ferry. There is also a rather odd garden furniture section which sells seemingly contemporary items. It is a little bit like they bought a load by mistake and are trying to shift it. Red Hall isn't as "genuine" as Red Lantern up the road, but they do sell "half" antiques. Where Red Lantern sells the genuine article, warts and all, Red Hall primarily does reconditions or copies. It is critical if you buy here to understand that you may not be buying genuine antique furniture, hence the lower prices compared to Hollywood Road. Let me give you an example; I bought a narrow book cupboard, which was reconditioned from an old larder. The original larder was 8ft across and had 16 decorative panels. Only four panels survived, so they rebuilt them into the book shelf that I bought, which is now only 2ft across. The back and sides of my cupboard are new built, only the panels are antique. Of course I knew this at the time, as the staff told me. One thing they are here (unlike perhaps GZ), is they are honest about the provenance. If it is a recondition, it says so on the sales ticket, and the staff will tell you what parts are old and new. They will also indicate what is replica, i.e. a completely new build of an old design. Surprisingly, a lot of the new builds are more expensive than the antiques, but that's HK for you! Only valuable if it's shiny and new...

If it was up to mean the living room walls would be filled with medieval weapons, I won't go onto my dream bedroom. That being said I was hugely attracted to the wares offered by Red Hall. It is situated in Mui Wo, strange as it sells things completely different to every other store on the island, in terms of price range and products. Upon walking in I was greeted by a giant cat statue. It looked twice my weight, beautiful, and from what I'm told, hand crafted in China. The same goes for everything else on the first floor of the store. The majority of items on sale are drawers, cabinets and shelves. All of which designed as if they were made in one of the Chinese Dynasties. Gorgeous colors of deep reds, blues and greens with chinese symbols adorn the drawers. Further back are some dining room sets - chairs and tables - and the second floor is entirely dedicated to outdoor furniture - sun beds, coffee tables, and that sort of thing. It's times likes these that I wise I took up a 'normal' job in finance as the price tags of these beauties are pretty heavy. We're talking about $3800 for a small shelve or $12500 for a couple chairs and table. I can see the value in the furniture here, and one day when I'm rich I'll be back and buy half a chair, or something.

Probably more of prop for them to decorate their operation with a contemporary feel, it is really the only place I have found in Hong Kong where they are sold. $1700HKD per doll. But if you were designing an office space, from walls to furniture, this would be a good place to check out.

The store is beautiful and offers a wide array of different items, from clothing to arts and crafts and jewelry. Everything is made in Hong Kong and we loved the idea of buying something that is not mass-produced. I got some hair tube wraps, a t-shirt and some jewelry: prices are on the expensive end but I got very quality, unique items that I did not see anywhere else during my stay so all in all, it was a good trade.

Such a sliver of a store front, we almost missed it. If you have never been to a G.O.D., absolutely go, you are going to love it. From necklaces, to clothes, to mouse pads, to shower curtains, to flip flops...the have a little bit of everything and most is Hong Kong themed in one way or another. It has the exact same goods at other G.O.D. stores around Hong Kong, but for some reason this one seems more lazily put together for the layout of their retail shop. The GOD in Central on Hollywood Road is a much better layout and much more inviting. This location almost seems like an orphan to the G.O.D. family. I like the G.O.D. offerings (really have some cool Hong Kong specific items that are cool for yourself or great for gifts), but simply wish they rotated stock more with "new" stuff. It seems like from month to month, season to season, I see the same stuff.

Longer version (for the brave) - On my first few days in HK I've decided to explore the area around central and Hong Kong station by foot, while accidentally stumbling upon this place. While looking for it in Yelp I've realized they are quite popular around town, so now I also feel lucky! This place is a store with stacks of clothes, not sure if it's all second hand but it all looks rather vintage-y. The pieces are divided in price ranges and there are some discounts if you buy a few. It's also divided by type- you won't find the racks with mixed clothing, which makes shopping even easier. I got here once and bought a few shirts, got loads of compliments and went back to buy more. The last in the store is very nice and there's so much to chose from I really get lost - so I only went for shirts :) The store is pretty packed and hard to move in... During rush hours there are a few people inside too, a fun time indeed! This is a place I'll definitely go back to during my next visit. So cool!

It's funny how it's located right there, and the heart of Central, next to all those overpriced high-end brands. That is some 5,000 words worthy of study of Hong Kong, but I'll save it for later. You can't miss Mee & Gee if you walk through Li Yuen Street West. Minimal design or anything fancy, but you will be greeted by huge amount of clothes. Like tons. Closest to the entrance are the $5 (HKD) clothes. People constantly walking in and out, so squeeze through if you have to. The men's clothing was mostly on the second floor, so I walked up there and took a quick look. To be fair, the design of a lot of clothes there are considered out of fashion. But then, isn't fashion something just being recycled every decade? And at least, the way you carry it is all it matters. Brad Pitt and I could wear the same cloth, but being interpreted and criticized very differently... Clothes are fairly clearly categorized, all in good bargains and good conditions. I'd still recommend you to wash it before you wear it, obviously. Also, I'd pick clothes with a darker tones than a lighter ones, as some of the clothes here tend to have this old, yellowish, wash-out tones. Unless of course, that tone is exactly what you are looking for. I didn't end up buying the cloth I had in mind, mainly because I keep a minimal amount of clothes at home, and I wouldn't buy new ones unless I'm 100% certain. But yeah, at least I know the cheap option is always there.

I've been a few times where aisles were almost completely blocked because they were using the floor to store extra boxes they had no idea where to place. You can still navigate around it, but it can be a little claustrophobic.

Laundry soap, cleaning supplies, organizational boxes, light bulbs, alarm clocks, de-humidifying products, batteries, pillows, rice cookers, small toaster ovens, office supplies, post-it notes, pens, candles,....crammed full, a little bit of everything....no food, no toiletries, but really everything else. Prices reasonable, quality mid-range, but lots of inventory.
