My partner has brought me here a handful of times every time we are in the Petoskey area because I love eclectic yard items and he knows how much I love triceratops... and there was one that he thought I would want. But he was HUGE and I just could not do it. He thought maybe I would buy it for my birthday, but to buy a 2 foot yard friend that could potentially get stolen just makes me a little nervous. However, the moment you drive into the space, with ample parking, you just get sucked into the charm of the space. They have so many different vibes that you could want. Every room has a different feel of pottery, jewelry, glasswork, outdoor things, ornaments, kitchenware, etc... you name it - they problem have it! It's so eclectic and wonderful, I can spend so much time wandering and will probably find something for everyone in my life here! The prices can vary based on what you're looking for but I love the fact that you will never leave without finding something you love. Everyone is always so friendly and if you're coming around the holidays, they even offer to gift wrap it for you - and let me tell you, the wrapping is SO unique and absolutely stunning - take them up on it! This is one of my favorite stores in northern Michigan! There is so much to choose from and we always find the coolest treasures for ourselves, plus gifts for family & friends. Pottery, jewelry, glassworks, outdoor art, and everything in between-- if they don't have it, you don't need it! The store is plentiful in both parking and space to shop around inside. Employees are friendly and accommodating, always offering to set you up with a "pile" while you shop around and collect your goodies! Such an inspiring atmosphere, too! There are artists working upstairs in the ceramics studio, throwing pottery on wheels and building beautiful pieces that will eventually be for purchase. Sturgeon River Pottery is a great place for finding fun stuff for your own place, or for beautiful, artistic gifts. There is definitely an "outdoorsy" feel to all the items, including bird feeders, bird houses, garden sculptures, weathervanes and Adirondack chairs. The locally-made pottery for which the place is named is that rustic style with dripping glaze. They have kitchenware and bathroom sets. The website is fairly extensive but it's best to see it at the store for every last variation possible. I needed a large bird feeder, and they have the Droll Yankees line there, so even though it cost big bucks, I can expect that it will last virtually forever and Sturgeon River is willing to provide replacement parts if needed. Be sure to check out the Petoskey stone jewelry! They also carry the locally-made Lavender Hill laundry bar. I would not want to do laundry without this handy product, which gets all kinds of stains out of clothing. The Lavender Hill skin care soap bar is another treat. It rinses easily even in hard water. Love it! The people there are really friendly and it's a great place to hang out for a while. Open all winter, in a tourist area where some other businesses might be closed until summer rolls 'round again. read more

You can get lost in this gift shop. So just go right upstairs to meet the local artist and watch and learn. They have a large selection of pottery in multiple colors, styles, glazes. The outdoor items boast Michigan pride. Try the Adirondack gliders. I bought some wine glass holders that attach to the Adirondack chairs. Check out bird houses and feeders, wine glasses adorned with Petoskey stones, Petoskey stone jewelry. I spent almost an hour scouting this place. Helpful staff and they offer free coffee & popcorn. Love this store full of unique items for both inside & outside your home. Lots of beautiful pieces from local artists - pottery, Petoskey stone jewelry & knives, even Petoskey stone glassware, gnomes & more. I visit from out of state but made it twice this year, once with my vehicle but when we flew, they carefully packed up and shipped our purchases for a reasonable price. If you are looking for a wonderful shop with pottery from many local artists then this is the place to shop. There are many types of pottery available and lots of color options too. And if you want matching pieces most artists have a catalog from which you can order missing pieces. I loved the birch bark place settings. Too bad I don't have a place that suits its nature. Oh me, oh my! Let's just start by saying we stopped in 2 days in a row... There's a great selection of pottery in multiple glazes. It's not cheap but it's beautiful!! The outdoor deco items are cool and lots of Michigan pride! I found the most wonderful pair of feet planters! Funky, out-of-the-box thinking going on here! They have the largest selection of bird houses and bird feeders that we've seen. Cool birch wood houses that blend into the environment! The staff are very helpful and kind. There is no running water in the building, but a clean port-a-potty is available. Coffee & popcorn are available for a donation- & the shop matches the donations which are given to kids/a school(?) How cool is that?! Shopping here was an excellent experience. If I'm ever in Petoskey again- I will definitely spend time here!! read more

I love Sturgeon River pottery! I have been going for years and have several pieces for myself and I also give them as gifts as well. I have purchased their adorable metal sunflowers too and have one in my yard and even one hanging on a wall inside. On top of beautiful pottery, they have so many cute things for indoor and outside decor, Adirondacks, jewelry and fun Petoskey stone items. Sturgeon River Pottery has, up till recently, been a "go to" place for me as they have a large and impressive selection of pottery, glass, and other items and have always made finding a gift relatively easy; however, I've decided that if a place of business is not willing to operate during hours that favor working people of the area, I will have to go elsewhere. Unlike places like Cutlers and Lake House [where I did much of my shopping this season] Sturgeon River now keeps what I call "boutique hours" and are not shy about telling you if you arrive around closing time [5:30pm]; I can only conclude that they want to focus on retirees, tourists, and persons of leisure, not those of us who work for a living. They may have a great inventory, but what use is it if they won't stay open long enough for you to shop there? read more

Outstanding shop and even more outstanding service!!! I've traveled all through the state of Michigan and can honestly say this is by far my favorite. In fact, when traveling to Petoskey, it is my number one destination. The inventory is made both on site and by other area artisans. The beauty and attention to detail of each piece is blatantly evident. Don't expect typical "souvenir" type junk. This shop is unique and absolutely worth your time. I could spend all day in here, so I have to force myself to leave (my wallet is the only thing that appreciates that). There's a rivalry of friendliness between the owners, employees and Nina (the dog). On my last visit I had an unfortunate experience with a pair of Petoskey stone earrings I purchased. The back of the earring separated from the stone. I was very disappointed. I saw them on the website and knew I would be buying them as my trip's souvenir before I ever walked into the store. My fiancé went the next day hoping to simply exchange them, but we're concerned that perhaps the same thing would happen to another pair of the same type. Well, DANA had a amazing and unexpected remedy. Not only did he exchange them, but he UPGRADED the style to a stone set in a bezel - double the price, but didn't charge us the difference!!!!!!!! NEVER will you find that kind of customer service! I challenge you.... Then, to top it off, he gift wrapped the new pair and finished it off with a sprig of beautiful dried flowers!!!! Classy?
