My experience was very poor with this nursing agency. I would not recommend this agency to anyone…read moreeven as a last resort. They provided an in-home nurse for my special needs daughter. The administrator, Priscilla, would submit claims for services provided to my wife's insurance, but she would do the claims wrong every time. Sometimes she'd use the wrong form. Sometimes she'd send it to the wrong place. This caused a delay in her receiving funding from Medicaid. Since it seems this agency was running out of funds and close to insolvent, they terminated my daughter's nursing care at 5:30 in the morning one Tuesday, without any notice. Priscilla insinuated it was our fault for not pushing my wife's insurance harder (not true). As if that wasn't enough, they prevented our nurse from coming with us to our new agency we had to find. Then, I actually had to hire a lawyer after they sent me a bill for over $20,000.00. And finally, several months later, they still have not paid that nurse for time worked from before they terminated us. She has submitted a claim with the Dept. of Labor and I have submitted complaints to all the applicable agencies I could find. All of this would have been avoided if they simply submitted the claims to the insurance correctly. This payment issue is entirely their fault, and I cannot recommend this agency for anyone.

You can hire the same caretakers through another agency. We had an issue with our health insurance that others had as well and there would be a gap of a couple weeks before it was reinstated. We were told it would not effect how the agency would be paid and that we were still covered for the in home care. When we relayed this message to Priscilla she was extremely rude and nasty. She told us that effective the following day she was cutting the hours we would have available. Just like that, with no notice and never even calling to check that what we were saying was true. For no good reason she cut our hours, potentially leaving us in a lurch, and my loved one who needed the care in danger. Luckily we got a referral for Courtesy Healthcare and they have been amazing. 1st Family was supposed to be taking over as the caseworker as well but did not provide any assistance in this area. It was our first experience using a home health care agency so we had no clue how much they weren't doing until we found the new agency. Within two weeks Courtesy Healthcare let us know about all the other benefits we should have been receiving. They assisted in finding answers we needed instead of just telling us to call someone else like Priscilla would always do. They were also able to provide us with more hours. We were told that overnight care was not available but the new agency had no problem providing it. 1st Family and Priscilla do not look out for their clients.

Adult Companion Care (ACC) provided seamless professional, reliable, loving, and personal home care…read moreservices for our family at a time when we needed support. Within one hour of a late night online request for help (for our 92 year old father) from various agencies, a personal response (rather than computer generated) came in from Jim Lindsey (President/CEO) who suggested connecting by the phone the following day; that conversation the next day was the second huge encouragement for us as we sensed genuine interest, empathy, concern and understanding of our situation. He set up an initial home visit assessment/evaluation, and this turned out to be a wonderful experience because there was no sense of feeling rushed or pressed. In addition, everything was clear and transparent. Afterwards, we had some weeks before our need for in-home care, but we could call ACC at any point before services to have additional questions answered or to update needs or changes. From speaking to various team members, it was clear that this company worked as a respectful and well-coordinated "family". Our close-knit family is very involved in the care of our 92-year-old father, who has a good number of chronic conditions and medical/health issues that need to be understood in order to care for him properly. Complete and careful body care/hygiene, good nutrition and prevention of illness or other conditions were important for us in our short-term need for services, but much more of our concern was our father's mental health and sense of feeling secure and understood by someone outside of the home. Our mother, 88, who did not herself need physical services, nonetheless, needed someone who could reassure her and who would be sensitive emotionally to both of them, in addition to doing things she could not do for my father that required special skills. From the first time we met Fatmata, the certified nursing assistant assigned by ACC, we were immediately impressed and reassured. She was a perfect fit for us, and my mother shared that it was like having one of her daughters around. We are four sisters and one brother who provide care for our parents. In other words, the caregiver needed to fill in for over a week and take care of a man who was under the observation and love of many family members. In ACC's complimentary hour of orientation/training, the daughter, who is a nurse, was impressed by Fatmata's manner as she was exceptionally intuitive, observant, and attentive with a high level of sensitivity and compassion. Although there was some initial adjustment for my father because he was missing his regular daily caregivers, after a couple of days, he was genuinely thanking Fatmata for her help. We are deeply grateful for Adult Companion Care and their dedication, personal care, and willingness to work with us to find the best support for our father so that he could remain comfortable and safe at home. With heartfelt thanks, the Duerbecks, Macks, Greenes, Olsens, and Swailes.

After working with Adventist, Visiting Angels, Synergy, and Right at Home, ACC Family was a breath…read moreof fresh air. The schedulers are incredibly patient, kind, and HONEST about what they can and can't do, which was such a big change. They also have some truly world class caregivers. There were some bad ones too, but in the end there were two people (Queen and Libby) who were simply incredible and were such a blessing to have caring for Mom. They have a relatively small pool of staff who can do lifting / transferring, but the ones they have are mostly good. They definitely tried to match our needs with their people, and as we provided feedback the matches got much better. They didn't have enough staff to provide full 24/7 care but worked with me as I filled the gaps with private folks. When they saw a snowstorm coming they would plan to have someone stay there for 2-3 days to prevent caregivers from not showing up due to bad road conditions. I have to subtract one star just for some of the bad caregiver experiences, and because billing turned out to be a bigger hassle with them than with other companies, but if I had to recommend a home care company in the DC area to someone else, it would without question be this one.
