I understand there are only select stylists here who cut men's hair, but the haircut I received was honestly one of the worst I've had in my 40+ years. The cut around my ears was noticeably uneven, the overall haircut just didn't look right, and I ended up going home and fixing parts of it myself with my own clippers and trimmers. The atmosphere is cute, energetic and fun, although it definitely feels geared more toward a younger female clientele than an adult male looking for a traditional men's cut. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that--it just wasn't the right fit for me. I really don't want this review to come across as an attack on the employees because everyone was extremely nice. My experience with the people was great; my experience with the actual haircut was not. For women or someone looking for the services they specialize in, this may be a completely different experience. But for a men's haircut, I personally wouldn't return.

Last night my friend and I went to dinner at Iron Horse before going to the Royal Oak theater. Having purchased online tickets in the past, I did not pay attention to the email that said in bold letters "must print tickets to attend". With 15 minutes before showtime, we were in downtown Royal Oak without a printer and had no idea what to do. Black the Salon shares a corridor with Iron Horse, so just on a whim I went next door and explained my predicament to a staff member who promptly referred me to Mary. Without hesitation and with several customers in the salon, Mary took time out of her evening to print my tickets and save the day. She is a rockstar and her staff was equally as welcoming. I'm not sure how well they cut, color, or style hair, but I will definitely be booking my next appointment for salon services with Black because if their talents behind the chair are half as good as their talents in front of it... I know I'll look and feel amazing when I walk out.

I've given Black three shots now because my husband liked it. My first haircut was pretty good, no complaints. The next visit...I decided to get some color done and made an appointment with a different stylist just based on available times. I got a call an hour before my appointment letting me know the stylist was running behind about 10 minutes. No problem. I thought that was very courteous. So I arrived a few minutes late as told, only the stylist wasn't even at work yet. I waited another half an hour for her to show up. I was worried about the appointment going over, but received no apologies when she arrived. The icing on the cake was that the color didn't even take. The stylist didn't charge me for the appointment, which was the one grace of the day. But I wasted 3 hours and still had to make another appointment. And right now, I am sitting at the salon AGAIN waiting for a third stylist, who is also now over half an hour late to work. Now, there's bad luck and there's bad service, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting equal doses at this salon. Customer service just doesn't seem high priority. I'll think about revisiting my star rating after she redoes my color today, but I already feel stupid for even sitting here.

The last time I had my hair braided at Jobe's, was 4 years ago. I asked for my "semi-usual", cornrows in the front and regular box braids in the back. The braider said "you want feed in braids?" I had no idea what "feed in braids" were but, because I've always trusted them with braiding my hair, I said "sure...why not, I'll give em a whorl" Let me just say, I was thoroughly pleased! My braids looked amazing and I got compliments every single day while on my cruise. Sure, it's not the cleanest place in town and it does take them a while to get started but, all of that is worth overlooking because once they get started and there's almost always 2 braiders at a time, they're really fast. It's never taken them more than 4 hours to finish.

The quality of service here is amazing. I made an appointment and was seen exactly at the time I requested. There's a nice waiting area. The salon is right at the freeway but there's private parking in front of the salon. She sells custom hair and eye lashes. She does neat and long lasting hair. Prices are reasonable. She does have specials so be on the lookout for those. She's very sweet and down to earth. This is definitely a woman's safe haven.

I then went to my regular stylist (who is a licenced cosmologist) afterwards to try and get my blending problem fixed. I asked her what I was doing wrong because I couldn't keep the tracks covered well and she said there wasn't enough of my natural hair left out on top and the only thing to do would be to take it out completely and have it redone. I was ok with that and then inquired about getting the extensions redyed because they were like 5 shades lighter than my natural hair and she said they were completely fried and there was nothing she could do to fix the color. This was all the day before my wedding so I paid for 2 sets of extensions and 2 installs because I was so afraid of going back to the person who messed up my extensions to try and let them fix it....you know, because it's the day before my WEDDING and if she messed them up a second time I might not have time to go back to my regular stylist to get it fixed. It was a nightmare and a refund was refused because I didn't let her try and fix it before I went somewhere else soooo I paid about $350 (plus tip) twice in one day (I had to buy 2 sets of hair because the set she tried to dye was ruined with the hair dye) AND had to go through the extreme discomfort of getting extensions put in twice.
