The only thing I come here for, and will continue to do, are the chips. As a potato freak, I've tried and never repeated ordering the potato cakes, as they were soggy and drowned in chicken salt, however the simple chip is where this place had me. I would often grab a large bag, to ensure my order was cooked fresh, and found them to be fantastic. On a recent trip there I got my usual order of fried potato, and must say that they'd slipped a little in terms of flavour, crunch and freshness. Whether it was a bad day or new management, I've jumped ship and taken my business to the Fish & Chip shop over the road of late.

There is nothing majorly wrong with it, it's just that it isn't as good as everywhere else. The floor is tiled in checkered beige and white and is quite dirty in places. The rest of the shop looks similar - old and missing the attention of a good sponge. The service is fine, but nothing amazing. I most certainly don't expect a conversation when I come here and I've never gotten a smile that indicates I have been remembered. Despite the menu claiming that "price will be changed without notice", the prices here are quite stable and don't tend to get changed. The menu itself is actually a big source of irritation for me as there are a lot of grammatical errors. Each time I go to the shop, or even walk past, I am tempted to pop in to point out that the correct spelling of a wrap (as in Souvlaki Wrap) is actually w-r-a-p and not "Wrappes" as is appears at least seven times in the menu. Apart from this, the place is alright. The food is decent but can be a little on the oily side. Just make sure to specify grilled if you find this a problem.

Eh. I'm glad this isn't what Vietnamese noodles are usually like…read more.. It is cheap at Tran Tran, but that was all I liked. The food was so bland. When a noodle soup comes out that quickly, there's no way it was made fresh. The vegetables tasted like they were frozen and then just added to some canned broth and heated up. The décor is quite odd. Doesn't really feel like it should be a Vietnamese noodle shop. At first I thought it was nice; very light and airy, clean, interesting artwork. Well, when you're facing the 'lighted' artwork, you begin to wish for sunnies...at night. It's just too bright and too white. And the service. Ouch. It was busy the night I went, on a Friday night. But as the restaurant is clearing out, and the line waiting for tables is gone, I couldn't get anybody's attention for a long time. We got our food quickly, but were never again offered refills of drinks, or anything else. I had to flag down (after multiple tries) someone working across the restaurant who just happened to look my way, to get a refill on my water. Lots of other places to try, so doubt I'll be heading back here.

Anything from stirfrys to curries to tofu, the place is popular amongst the locals and you will be back for me. I've seen similarly themed restaurants in the UK, a fusion of fish and chip shops with curry joints, and I think the concept works really well. Curry goes with chips beautifully, and this place makes delicious chips. The curry dishes themselves are really good. The biryani is recommended. The presentation is what you'd expect from a suburban curry takeaway, but the dining area is pretty decent. This place does get busy, particularly for the hopper nights. Prices are good. Coming from a vegetarian that doesn't eat fish, I have found the best way to tell you have found a worthy chip shop is if they do good chips and good potato cakes. It may sound strange, but 90% will do one and not the other. Another consistency that has slowly disappeared form the chip shops code is the free potato cake with any purchase. One other menu item worth noting is the 'Mars Bar in Batter". The Basin Fish & Chips was the first place I knew of to cook these oddities.
