After more than 30 years as a loyal Farmers Insurance customer, insuring my vehicles and two homes,…read moreI can confidently say that leaving Farmers was one of the best decisions I've made. What happened to me after three decades of loyalty was absolutely disgraceful. For years, I was insured through the David Gathing agency on Mount Vernon Avenue in San Bernardino. I had excellent service and a grandfathered homeowners policy that included fire coverage at approximately $700 per year. Everything was fine until my longtime agent retired and my policies were transferred to the Farmers office on Cherry Avenue in Fontana. That's when the nightmare began. I was told that my existing policy was no longer appropriate because it included coverage for occasional Airbnb rentals, something I rarely did anymore. I specifically insisted on keeping my grandfathered policy, but I was warned that Farmers might refuse to pay a claim because my coverage supposedly no longer matched how I used the property. I was assured that switching policies would cost approximately the same amount. That turned out to be completely false. My annual premium went from $700 to $1,800, and eventually to an outrageous $3,000! That's more than FOUR TIMES what I had originally been paying! I believe I was misled into surrendering a valuable grandfathered policy that I had maintained for years. Once it was gone, so was the affordable coverage I had worked to preserve. Whether this was deliberate deception or gross incompetence, the result was the same: I was the one who paid the price. As if that weren't enough, my policies were shuffled from the original Mount Vernon office to Agent Theresa Vasquez in the Cherry ave office in Fontana and eventually to Amar's Farmers Insurance office in Highland. The final straw was the disorganization at the Highland office, including problems handling my California FAIR Plan fire insurance coverage. After 30 years, I had absolutely had enough. What kind of insurance company treats a loyal, longtime customer this way? Apparently, 30 years of faithfully paying premiums means very little when it comes to protecting the customer. My experience left me feeling deceived, taken advantage of, and completely betrayed by a company I had trusted for three decades. My advice: Think very carefully before doing business with Farmers Insurance, particularly if you have an older grandfathered policy. Do not surrender that coverage based on verbal assurances. Get everything in writing, including the exact replacement premium and coverage terms. Farmers had my business for 30 years. They will never get another dime from me. Never again.
