Great service provided! Setups, fret work and electronics. Zach and Jeff make it all better!

I dropped several bass clarinets off to Star on December 5th, 2025. On December 12th, I called Star and asked for an update, and I was told the tech would start on it in January as they have a large school instrument backlog and was quoted a price. On January 12th, I called and asked for an update and they told me it would be 2 weeks, as they still have a large school instrument backlog. Today, January 26th, two weeks later, I called twice. At 1pm when I called, they said they had no info and would call the tech for me and call me back. At 5:14pm, I called again as they had not returned my call, and they said it would be another two weeks before they would even start on my instrument, still citing a large backlog, saying that there were 10 instruments in front of mine. At this point it has been too long, and I am ready to pick up my instrument and take it somewhere else, so I offer to head down there before they close, only to be told I can't pick it up today, because my instruments are at their shop. So I offer to just drive over to their shop instead to save them the trip, and they say that I cannot go to their shop, without providing a reason why. I would not recommend that anyone go to star music to get their own personal instruments repaired, they clearly do not have the staffing nor the organizational skills to handle their business, and they get defensive and rude when you call them out for poor business practices. I simply do not trust a business that has a backlog of school instruments after the school year is a month in. They either need to hire more people, or stop accepting such a high volume of repair work, it is simply unacceptable that a customer should have to wait almost two months with no proactive communication from Star. I've tried multiple technicians in the area and have found that only Pecknel music in Greeneville is capable of delivering timely, quality work with an accurate upfront quoted price. I have never had any of my instruments take longer than two weeks at Pecknel. I hope not to have to deal with Star Music ever again

I was given the third degree about renting a viola for my daughter at the end of the school year…read more The sales associate was very rude about it. I didn't realize students don't practice their instruments over the summer?? I don't have to justify why I'm renting an instrument. I received the same poor service a few months ago when I purchased reeds for a clarinet. In both instances I was treated as if I was inconveniencing them.

Been going here since around 1990. They used to have some nice stuff, like high-end Fenders,…read moreoccasional Gibson acoustics, etc. They also are currently one of two Martin dealers in the area. I actually bought an amp there years ago, and many accessories over the years such as string, hardware, etc. They've always been pretty friendly, although they follow you around the entire time once you enter the store and show any interest in the guitars. The nicer stuff now is over-priced by about 10%, and they won't come down at all. The Martin section is in a dark part of the store, and the guitars are not at all featured in any way (they look like they have old strings on them, as well). For a few years, they'd actually follow you around with a cloth and take the guitar from you after you tried it out and buff it down really good--okay, understandable, given the part of town the store is in. But the straw on the camel's back for me was a few months ago when I dropped in on a Friday afternoon during lunch. I was in actually in the mood for an archtop, and they had a nice Ibanez Artcore AF-105 in stock. I've played and handled dozens of guitars over the past thirty years that I have played, and baby my own guitars, but when the nice young sales girl looked at me and said that I'd have to commit to buying the guitar before I could try it out, I just stood there, looking at her in disbelief. I could have been pursuaded that day--I was feeling weak--to walk out the door with that thing--if only she'd known. . . . Well, that phrase sort of shook me out of my trance, and I said something like "that's okay--thanks anyhow." She tried saying that it wasn't personal, or that they didn't trust me, it's just. . ." I know--all kinds of freak-looking people walking in the door in work clothes handling the stuff like they do at Guitar Center, and then me, in professional clothes taking a break from my professional job choosing to come to your store. Thanks, guys, for ruining it for the rest of us. And no thanks to Tri-City. I hear the place is for sale now.
