This holiday season was a very particular one for me as I spent it in Europe since my companion is here until June 2014 for work. His first 5 months were in Dresden and I joined him the week of December 20th in Dresden where I stayed with him until the 24th and then we returned so he could finish up some things from the 27th to 30th.
If you check this site, it provides a bit of history/information:

The one thing the site doesn't say is that there are a series of Christmas markets that run from the main historic square, across the bridge to the shopping district of Albertplatz. Each section has I it's own personality but a few things are present in all of them: beautiful handicrafts in wood for the tree as well to adorn your windows (something that is quickly apparent walking in the neighbourhoods) during Christmas, broiled bratwurst (beef and pork), and the gluhwein and eierpunsch...both delicious and warm beverages (yes, alcoholic, but also available w/ o) to keep you warm during your walk. As well, many of the little houses/ kiosks that sell them for 3 extra Euros also sell you a mug that you can bring back with you on your next day's visit (yes, we went everyday/evening to take a walk through and IN case, brought along our mugs ;-] ).
The photos on the site I highlight are not exaggerations. The atmosphere is busy and lively with people everywhere but you never feel overwhelmed to worry for safety or otherwise. It is a seriously family friendly event and it is apparent from the children's theatre within the market, a few rides, and the playful decorations on the rooftops of the little houses that sell everything from the famous "Christollen" which comes from Dresden to the Chimney Sweep character in black sugar, to the lace Christmas decorations and lighted wood Christmas decorations (something I regret not buying but found a shop that has a site that I can order from).
It is worth visiting dresden for this if you are there in late November/December and plan on staying for a long weekend since the shopping isn't bad either along with the sites, natural and historical :-) read more
