The deep history behind each spot was really moving to hear, even as locals! We especially enjoyed learning the stories behind iconic landmarks and people like the St. Louis Cathedral, the Beauregard-Keyes House, the Mighty Mississippi, the Ursuline nuns, and so many more. The tour provided the perfect blend of history, architecture, culture, and local insight, giving us a much deeper appreciation for the city's rich heritage. Thank you, Two Chicks!

I attended Unique NOLA's French Quarter walking tour on Thursday morning, and unfortunately, my…read moreexperience was so uncomfortable that I ended up leaving the tour early. For context, I was the only Black person in our group. Our first stop was an area where the guide, Dane, discussed the history of slavery in New Orleans, including where enslaved people were held and the streets they were marched down to be sold and traded. During his explanation, Dane began discussing Louisiana's racial hierarchy and how people who were partially Black could sometimes own property and attain certain positions in society. Rather than simply explaining this historical context, he decided to single me out in front of the entire group. He pointed directly at me and said, "I'm going to use you as an example." I responded, "Are you really?" He replied, "Yes, really." Despite my very obvious discomfort, he proceeded to explain that if he and I were cousins, he would be able to rise through the ranks of society because he was white-passing, while I would never be able to reach the top of society because of my dark skin. Again, I was the ONLY Black person in the group. There were countless ways to explain the historical realities of colorism and racial discrimination without pointing out the only Black person present and making her skin color the subject of a public demonstration. What made the situation even more frustrating was that I had already questioned his decision to use me as an example. My response should have been a clear indication that I was uncomfortable, yet he continued anyway. I came to learn about the history and culture of New Orleans, not to be singled out and used as a living example of racial discrimination in front of a group. Discussing slavery and racial inequality is an important part of understanding the city's history, but doing so requires sensitivity, awareness, and respect for the people participating in the tour. I ultimately decided to leave rather than continue participating in an experience that had made me feel so uncomfortable. I hope Unique NOLA takes this feedback seriously and provides its guides with additional training on how to discuss sensitive historical subjects without unnecessarily singling out guests. No one should have to experience this while simply trying to enjoy a walking tour.

Full disclosure: I had never taken a French Quarter tour until yesterday. A random invitation over…read morecocktails had me and about a dozen friends wandering the Quarter on a Wednesday night for Kate's Streets of Sin tour, accidentally dressed for a funeral procession, with the exception of one lone flapper in teal. I live in the French Quarter, so my relationship with tour groups usually consists of fighting my way down overcrowded sidewalks, listening to the same embellished stories shouted by guides reading from the same script to hand grenade touting tourists with no spatial awareness. It was refreshing to discover this wasn't that. If you're looking for pirates, vampires, ghosts, or whatever story gets recycled every twenty feet, keep walking. Kate skipped the greatest hits and went straight for the city's seedier side instead. Murder? Check. Crime? Check. Corruption? Absolutely. Scandal? Plenty. The same five stories every other guide has been telling for decades? Mercifully, no. None of it felt scripted. You can tell Kate genuinely loves the research. Each stop had me thinking, "How have I lived here this long and never heard that?" It felt less like a history lecture and more like your smartest friend letting you in on a couple centuries worth of really juicy gossip. It was truly an entertaining way to spend a couple hours in New Orleans. 5 stars, all day.

We did the "Lower Garden District" tour. This tour fell way short of our expectations. It was…read moreactually comical. It could have been nicer if: - The tour guide talked about some of the history of the neighborhood you're walking through. Or the significance of certain stops/restaurants. - Called ahead to any of these places so they were somewhat prepared to receive 10-12 people. Many of the places seemed put off and frustrated that we all showed up. A reserved table would have been nice anywhere. Instead, you're hoping for a table but end up standing and eating against a wall. - Have a semblance of organization when it comes to the order of foods. Start off with an appetizer, then a salad or something, then a bit heavier, and then wind down. My neighborhood potluck is more organized than this was. - If I pay $100 for the tour, offer at least $40 worth of food. Buying a $12 sandwich and quartering it is a bit "cheap" to me. - How hard would it be to include drinks? I estimate we had $35 worth of food per person based on menu prices and portions offered. I wouldn't recommend and definitely won't do it again.
