It's an ADA playground which means it's a recreational space catered to kids with disabilities. It has wheel chair accessible ramps and firm surfacing. There's fitness equipment, covered picnic tables, benches, lots and lots of space. In addition to alll of this...right outside the playground, you are steps away from; a tennis court, basketball court, outdoor volleyball court, walking and running trails (dog friendly), and public restrooms. There's also a ton of parking. There's a little water fountain play area as well, but the water is turned off during winter season. The only downside is finding this park. It is quite a drive from the main road, but it's worth the trek!! I promise :)

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, but still adventurous, activity!

I really wish I had known and found the older exploratory part of the park earlier in the day - I spent too much time on the picnic-y parts of the park, but I enjoyed it. The signs were a little bit misleading - there are parts of the exploritory area that are closed to the public but there was no warning of that when you were heading that way. I actually really enjoyed the bird observatory and the bridge. It was such a hot day but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Google maps took me a really odd way and…read moreeven then I believe I actually drove around it twice before I ignored the directions being given to kind of throw it off (mostly due to the construction that was also going on around it). I then accidentally found it. However, when I did find it, I was pretty happy. I do wish there was more of a resource for finding out about the trails. There was one trail that went kind of through a bunch of trees right to the left of the parking area and I could almost hear a waterfall? river but I could not figure out how to get to it and it was getting late and starting to rain, so I did not feel safe doing a lot of exploring. I absolutely loved walking along some of the trails and over the bridge (although with as strong as the smell was, I feared that I barely missed an encounter with a skunk). I did not do near the amount of walking I could have done due to the time of day and the rain storm coming, but man, I can't wait until I have a day to go back and do some more exploring - this place is fascinating.

There are two separate areas - a 2.5 acre space for large dogs and a 1.0 acre space for small dogs. The 15 inches or larger is their decider for small and large. The park was well kept but it's clearly summertime because the grass is growing quite a lot. Each park has an entry area where you can securely leash and unleash your dog. The parking lot is a large stone gravel. I'm sure that's needed because of the weather they get here in Nebraska but it's definitely uncomfortable for canine paws. This has become one of our favorite things to do on Saturday morning. In most seasons, this park is open and ready for exploring and the kids can't get enough. Each time we go we discover something different. The highlight is always the Nature Ninja obstacle course - we do several rounds. We also like to take a little hike out to the windmill to see frogs and play in the water. We usually end our morning hike with a picnic lunch on-site. The Prairie Pines Nature Preserve is a protected area of natural interest and habitat for diverse species. It is sustained for conservation, nature experience and understanding. Created by nature and endowed by the life's work and pleasure of Walt and Virginia Bagley, it exists on 145 acres of woodland, grassland, wetland and remnant prairie. Lincoln is a fairly small city, as those go, so some of those elements are perhaps more limited and less pronounced, but are not absent. If you spend any significant amount of time there, expect to see a police cruiser or two. Second, you will have to drive for a ways inside the city to get to it. The street it is off of is quite goofy but does lead, after a bit, back to I-80. It does have open and somewhat clean restrooms and a very moderate play area, with parts of it covered, along with covered seating and benches. Overall, a fairly small park and anywhere else, would be a pretty enjoyable place to spend time, but given the proximity to the shelter, one begins to wonder if it is meant as an extension or to service that facility. Either way, probably will not be one I return to.
