Straits Café in Doncaster Road is a favourite mealtime destination for Asian (mostly Malaysian and Singaporean) residents who live in the Doncaster/ Balwyn/ Templestowe area. That being said, people from as far as Williamstown are regulars at this humble little café.
Unassuming from the outside with ample free parking just outside the restaurant, you wouldn't think that this place would be anything to rave about. But from my very first visit with relatives, I must say or scream that this place is really the bomb!
Forget half-baked, try hards that claim to serve authentic Malaysian fare. I've tried most of the dishes on the menu and can't decide which is my favourite but I have to say the Char kway teow, Penang assam laksa and the Har mee are top of my list.
Quick, efficient service is the norm here but the iconic clanging of the large blackened woks, clashing of utensils and the intense aroma (fumes) of authentic hawker fare is what gives this place its original and unsurpassed charm. read more
