After watching several tournaments I wonder what they are looking for in scoring participants. One is busy paying attention to what is going on in other courts instead of the one he is suppose to be doing. They tend to favor students from their own school. They should split up the judges so they are not all from one school or associated with the school. It doesn't seem fair for the other participants from different schools. read more

The academy is family and children friendly. The owners and staff are friendly and knowledgable. Classes are scheduled at various times throughout the week to maximize convenience. The only thing I don't like is how crowded the entry area becomes between classes when one group is coming and precious group is leaving. read more

I used to go to the Mattevi Martial Arts Academy years ago and although I no longer go here, I wanted to write about my experience because I continuously reflect back on what a positive experience I had at this academy. I started here as a beginner in Tae Kwon Do and ended up getting my black belt, along with starting up Muay Thai kickboxing. Mr and Mrs Mattevi were always willing to do whatever it took to make sure I succeeded and they are truly amazing at what they do. They are great instructors and phenomenal in martial arts. I highly recommend this place, it's a great atmosphere with great programs and every instructor I had was top of the line. I was willing to follow them from their Duluth location to Superior and the only reason I do not go there anymore is because I moved away from the area. I have tried other martial arts academies in my new location, but nothing comes close to Mattevi's academy. read more

StoneHouse Martial Arts was founded as Mattevi Martial Arts Academy in 1994. The current location in Duluth (Woodland Ave.) opened in 2018. There is an affiliated school in Superior.

Meet the Business Owner: Stefan S.

Mr. Stein was born in Salzburg, Austria. In his 14 years of Austrian military service, he held several teaching and leadership positions including head instructor for close combat in his battalion. After immigrating to the United States with his wife and two children in 2004, he and the whole family began formal martial arts training with Master Gary Mattevi.
