On a spontaneous solo trip to Istanbul during Thanksgiving break, I wanted to have a nice meal during Thanksgiving day. I have to say hands down, one of my most memorable Thanksgiving meal I have ever had. I started the night looking for a place to eat. Surprisingly most restaurants were empty (a side effect of the recent decrease in tourism). I chose the Stone House as there were several people eating. My meal was beautifully presented and it was the perfect dish (Chef's Special) accompanied by rice and potato.
While the meal was great, the unexpected events happened. Within the three parties (myself included) we just started talking. The staff was very welcoming and initiated the conversation. Organically, we became one big party discussing Istanbul, politics, philosophy, etc. Then several other people came with guitars (I think they were friends of the staff, just wanting to hang out). They started singing and it just made for a great night. I don't believe that this was a coincidence as the place was cozy, inviting, and accepting. I would also attribute this to the welcoming and caring staff. The two gentlemen, one from Afghanistan and the other ethnically Kurd were friendly and smart. Our hostess/maybe owner is the real reason why this place is amazing. I sensed from her that events like this is the reason for having this restaurant. These people are real. Oh, and the meal was relatively inexpensive too. read more
