I wish they gave samples because it's too expensive of a risk to order a scoop of a flavor and not end up liking it. I've tried the sweet cream, strawberry, callebut chocolate, and Maine blueberry. Sweet cream was solid. The strawberry is unique - seems to have very high strawberry content, so it ends up almost tasting like an ice cream-sorbet hybrid in comparison to say Haagez Dazs which is more cream-forward. The chocolate was also great. I was hoping that the Maine blueberry would essentially taste like a black raspberry ice cream but it just tasted like blueberry, which I suppose should come as no surprise. It was a little too sweet and not my favorite but maybe true blueberry-lovers would like it. I read a bit online about how they don't do samples in order to keep costs down and also keep people moving in and out of the shop quickly. It's an interesting model but ultimately it feels like they are prioritizing saving marginal costs at the expense of the experience of the customer. Maybe they save tens of thousands of disposable spoons by doing this, but when it comes to a person's individual experience in the store wanting to optimize getting a flavor they like, that gets sacrificed. Sort of opposite of customer-first. Some of their flavors are also pretty unique like lemon poppy seed with a jam mixed in and it's hard to anticipate what that'll be like. I also think a homemade waffle cone as opposed to the bought ones they have available would be a major upgrade here. Overall, great ice cream with a few things that could be better.

We were craving ice cream, and Zephyr popped up on Yelp. As soon as I saw their shaved ice and ice cream creations, I was intrigued. They reminded me of the incredible shaved ice desserts I'd enjoyed in Hawaii and across Asia. The shop itself is charming, with fun signage and a welcoming atmosphere. Every ice cream combination sounded tempting, but I finally settled on the chocolate pretzel and the orange creamsicle. Both were outstanding, and it's easy to see why they've been voted one of Portland's best. The staff were thoughtful and attentive, and the owner was especially welcoming. He told us he was a former bartender, which makes sense--every syrup is made in-house, as is the ice cream. That extra care and craftsmanship really shine through in every bite.

However, I was in the mood for ice cream and this was calling me - so I decided to head in. Beal's is in a prime location in Old Port - right between Fore and Commercial Streets on a corner of a cobblestone alley. I went close to closing, so it wasn't crowded - though I can imagine being an ice cream shop in a seaside city they see a good amount of foot traffic during prime time. The interior is spacious with a decent amount of seating, plus some more outside. The decor is relatively simple with fun murals on the walls that add a pop of color. I decided to get a cup which came with my choice of two flavors - they had a good selection and I went with chocolate peanut butter cookie and another flavor that escapes my mind. The ice cream was fine - nothing too outstanding if I'm being honest but also not bad. Service was good, and overall I thought Beal's was fine. Nothing outstanding IMO but also nothing bad. If circumstances found me here again I wouldn't be mad.

Lived in Portland for years and never had a reason to come here when there's so many other (glamorous) options, but now living so close I just think this spot is super, duper charming. Yes, the prices are higher than at other places and I'm not entirely sure why, but this doesn't really bother me because the portions have always been enormous here, it's super convenient to where I live, there's never a wait, the staff is accommodating about wacky requests, they take credit cards, and the customer service is sometimes above and beyond what's becoming the norm downtown (I showed up once a few minutes after they had closed for the night, but they still let us order giant sundaes anyway!). They serve stuff from The Ice Cream Machine (out of Rhode Island, and distributed by Sysco) so it's not homemade or local even - I don't think it's the most delicious ice cream in the world, but it gets the job done and sometimes that's all you need (side note: their sundaes are awesome here; they know how to pour. on. the. hot. fudge!). Do I think this is a destination spot? Absolutely not. Is it ever going to make it on some national "Best of..." list that will drive hoards of people to it? Nope. Will I seek it out when I move away from the neighborhood? Can't say that I will. But is it a perfect spot for those Back Cove/The Pocket folks within walking distance? Yep. It's nice that in the state's biggest, busiest, trendiest city there are still places you can safely, quietly walk to get some ice cream with your family and enjoy it in a pristine park across the street only locals really know about.

Gross Confection recently announced on social media they would be shutting down the bar/desserts service while remaining open as a bakery. My wife and I came here many a times for an end cap to the night for one last drink and delicious and beautifully made desserts. Timing worked out well and we were doing a staycation in Portland and knew we needed to add a stop here one last time. Thankfully we got our names in on the waiting list early enough Friday and got sat as one of the last tables. We each had one last phenomenal drink; my wife and Apricot 75 that had a great tart kick of apricot and lemon.
